Those hires look to be official, there is a story up on the UB athletics website.

OMG, nothing like leaving and blowing up the program at the same time.   >:( >:( >:(  I am not lost for words but I'll keep the ugly ones private for now................... :-X

Can you imagine what is going on in that locker room and how those players must feel, knowing the vast majority of their staff, all the coaches that recruited you, encouraged you, believed in you, are now leaving??  And, oh, BTW, you have a play-off game Saturday..................   ???

All this reminds me of a scene from the movie Animal House. Which seems fitting considering John Belushi attended UWW for a semester. While watching the clip, keep in mind how I see it:

- Dean Wormer: Danny White (Buffalo AD)
- Repo men: Lance Leipold
- Mermaid/Cow/Manikin/The Bar: UWW coaching staff
- Blutarsky: 02 Warhawk (because he typically over reacts just like this)
- Otter: bleedpurple (voice of reason, always knows what to do to calm 02 down)
- Hoover: badgerhawk
- Niedermeyer and his Omega Theta Pi brothers: All the smug (private school) d3 fans loving every moment of this  ;)
- Schoenstein: BoBo (witty smart a$$ comments)
- Pinto: emma17 (Bobo's partner in crime)
- Delta Tau Chi frat: All UWW football fans

Of course this is mostly tungue and cheek (with about 20% how I really feel).  :'(

They took the whole &*^%& bar!!
Can I be Flounder, the clueless freshman?

Why the shock?  You had to expect him to want to take some of them with him. And you would expect some of them to want to go with him.  The opportunity (money) has to be enticing to anyone who coaches and wants to move up the chain.  What a great opportunity for all of them.

I don't want to speak for everyone, I am surprised with Borland mostly and a little bit Kotelnicki.
Borland because of his WI roots and his personality.  I also figured he was the most likely in line for the HC job.  I pictured him as a guy that was most comfortable at UWW, the kind of coach happy to stay in one place for his career.  He's an excellent coach and will be a great asset of course.
As for Kotelnicki, I figured Lance had a higher division OC in his pipeline. I think he's an excellent coach, I just figured there was someone else.

The other guys aren't a surprise.  They are both young and want to make their way in the ranks.  Agpalsa had that great experience this past summer with one of the NFL teams, so I see him wanting to get on that fast train.

All of those assistants might have been gone when a new UWW head coach is appointed.

It kind of sucks for your team right now, but I think, with very few exceptions (I'm looking at you retagent  ;D ) those of us posting or lurking would jump at this opportunity given the same situation.  This is a huge career opportunity for these men.  They need to do what they believe to be best for them and their families.

Coach Leopold should be applauded for his loyalty to his coaches and providing them the same major leap in position, compensation, etc. Would LL have had this opportunity without these coaches?

The kids are going to rightfully be very hurt and upset.  I feel for them.  I got fired from my job yesterday, so I'm identifying with them more than I wish I were.  With a few years to gain perspective I hope they will better understand the inflection point this offers their former coaches.

That said, being a Johnnie, I do hope this provides a significant speed bump for the UWW juggernaut.   ;) 8-)

Sorry to hear about that ROR.

If you read back a few pages you'll see we're all were ok with Lance getting his position at Buffalo. However, when it was announced that (just about) his entire staff would be leaving too..only then we started to get concerned about the ripple affect it would have on this organization.

Yes, it's obviously a great opportunity for all the coaches involved and their families. But it'll be very tough to replace those guys and have the program not skip a beat.

UWW's new AD has some big decisions to make in the up coming months. I can't imagine her not feeling any pressure on replacing a Lance Leipold with someone that can continue the Warhawk tradition. It won't be easy.

P.S.  UWW will survive and prosper.  There is a lot more to the success at UWW than the coaches. Please look at the national prominence of the entire athletic program.

I have had a chance to sleep on it and calm down, a little.  First and foremost, I am so sorry to hear about your situation, ROR. I hope that this is one of those situations where, "when a door closes, a window opens."  But your story does really help to provide context.  I agree with everything you said, especially, the point about the loyalty it shows on Lance's part to recognize and take with him, all these coaches who helped him get where he is today.  Also, great point about the opportunity that his offers these men and their families, especially, monetarily.  The coaching profession is, notoriously, transient with very little job security. This will be a big pay day for Lance and Brian and Co..   They deserve it.

As a parent of an ex-defensive player, losing Brian is a very emotional trigger for me.  Seems like only yesterday, he and Stan were eating salsa in my family room and we were all watching game tape.  ;)  He has been a wonderful coach, mentor and friend to my son and our family.  While I am thrilled for him and Gayle and the Borland family, it is a sad day for me. With an opportunity to take over the program, I just didn't expect it and frankly, can't envision the WARHAWKS without him. But for all those reasons, I am sure this was not an easy decision for Brian.  A huge congrats and thank you to him for all he has done to make the program, (and my son,) what it is and who he is today.  He will be greatly missed.

And the timing of all this really sucks for the players, the ones I most relate to, as well.  A few more weeks, at the most, if we continue to win out, sure would have been way better for the team.  I  hope all can come together, focus and play their best football on Saturday.

I admit, with no personal knowledge of the new AD, this will be a huge undertaking and test for her.  I would feel better is Paul was still in place.  :(

A little levity to break the serious mood....

02 Warhawk - I thought your Animal House post was easily the best of this season and maybe your best ever.  However, one complaint - when you consider the amount of face time and dialogue Schoenstein spends on screen during the scene, I do believe he and I deserve a little higher billing on the cast credits, don't you think?  I could also be Niedermeyer's dad in Korea!!  ;D  Though, I would never claim to be related to him.

Another Whitewater connection to Animal House - Tom Hulce who played "Pinto" Kroger was either born in Whitewater or lived for a time on Easterly Ave. with his grandparents in Whitewater, or both - I'm not entirely certain - so goes the legend.

Also, I saw your post on the OAC pickems and you got some explaining to do, Benedict!!   ::)
