All of those assistants might have been gone when a new UWW head coach is appointed.

It kind of sucks for your team right now, but I think, with very few exceptions (I'm looking at you retagent  ;D ) those of us posting or lurking would jump at this opportunity given the same situation.  This is a huge career opportunity for these men.  They need to do what they believe to be best for them and their families.

Coach Leopold should be applauded for his loyalty to his coaches and providing them the same major leap in position, compensation, etc. Would LL have had this opportunity without these coaches?

The kids are going to rightfully be very hurt and upset.  I feel for them.  I got fired from my job yesterday, so I'm identifying with them more than I wish I were.  With a few years to gain perspective I hope they will better understand the inflection point this offers their former coaches.

That said, being a Johnnie, I do hope this provides a significant speed bump for the UWW juggernaut.   ;) 8-)

Sorry to hear the news about your job, ROR. You will be in my prayers.

My view: Sometimes things happen that cause changes. No one signed up for the changes, so the unknown that comes with the imposed changes tend to evoke emotional reactions. That is normal.  It leaves us with things to sort out. Sometimes it leaves us with feelings of anger or frustration with no one to truly be mad at.  That is how I see this. Emotional reactions with some degree of frustration and anger, yet no one to really blame. How can we begrudge coach for seizing a career opportunity? How can we begrudge assistants for doing the same?

I find it hard to feel sorry for myself or other fans. Who gets to experience what we have gotten to experience over the last decade?

My emotions are tied completely to the players.  They  are in essentially the same boat we are.  Except the goals and dreams that they have poured blood, sweat, and tears into are at stake.  This week they have had to process frustration, anger, and a sense of being startled.  All with no one to appropriately lash out at or take it out on.  I have an idea.  How about Wartburg?  ;)

A little levity to break the serious mood....

02 Warhawk - I thought your Animal House post was easily the best of this season and maybe your best ever.  However, one complaint - when you consider the amount of face time and dialogue Schoenstein spends on screen during the scene, I do believe he and I deserve a little higher billing on the cast credits, don't you think?  I could also be Niedermeyer's dad in Korea!!  ;D  Though, I would never claim to be related to him.

Another Whitewater connection to Animal House - Tom Hulce who played "Pinto" Kroger was either born in Whitewater or lived for a time on Easterly Ave. with his grandparents in Whitewater, or both - I'm not entirely certain - so goes the legend.

Also, I saw your post on the OAC pickems and you got some explaining to do, Benedict!!   ::)

Thanks...I thought the clip was a mirror image of the UWW faithful on here (half joking at least to add some levity)

As for the OAK pickems:
UWW 35 - Wartburg 21

OK, your off the hook for more than misspelling that team from Iowa's name!!

So, the score, in other words, Milk fed over corn fed ... sounds a little light on the left side and a little heavy on the right side, but I'll take it.

I have had a chance to sleep on it and calm down, a little.  First and foremost, I am so sorry to hear about your situation, ROR. I hope that this is one of those situations where, "when a door closes, a window opens."  But your story does really help to provide context.  I agree with everything you said, especially, the point about the loyalty it shows on Lance's part to recognize and take with him, all these coaches who helped him get where he is today.  Also, great point about the opportunity that his offers these men and their families, especially, monetarily.  The coaching profession is, notoriously, transient with very little job security. This will be a big pay day for Lance and Brian and Co..   They deserve it.

As a parent of an ex-defensive player, losing Brian is a very emotional trigger for me.  Seems like only yesterday, he and Stan were eating salsa in my family room and we were all watching game tape.  ;)  He has been a wonderful coach, mentor and friend to my son and our family.  While I am thrilled for him and Gayle and the Borland family, it is a sad day for me. With an opportunity to take over the program, I just didn't expect it and frankly, can't envision the WARHAWKS without him. But for all those reasons, I am sure this was not an easy decision for Brian.  A huge congrats and thank you to him for all he has done to make the program, (and my son,) what it is and who he is today.  He will be greatly missed.

And the timing of all this really sucks for the players, the ones I most relate to, as well.  A few more weeks, at the most, if we continue to win out, sure would have been way better for the team.  I  hope all can come together, focus and play their best football on Saturday.

I admit, with no personal knowledge of the new AD, this will be a huge undertaking and test for her.  I would feel better is Paul was still in place.  :(

Confirmed it with #33 last night, we will be heading to the Perk on Saturday.  If memory serves, (and doesn't often these days,) are the reserved parking spots during the season over now?  Is it back to a first come, first serve, situation during the play-offs?

BTW, he and his wife made it Facebook official last night regarding my becoming a grandma in April, along with announcing the sex.  Seems the Raebel's have a future linebacker in the pipeline!    ;) :D ;D :'(

Wow!  I've been following the shakeup at UWW for a few days.  That's a big hit for the Warhawks, but we all know you'll land on your feet.  Mount's dealt with the loss of LK.  SJU's steaming ahead with the loss of JG.  UWW will come back from the loss of LL and staff.  Best of luck, but let SJU bring home some walnut and bronze while you recover!  ;)

A tradition unrivaled...

Reserved spots are still in place. We still get ours (A10) for the playoffs. But it's kind of a free-for-all anyway in the playoffs, because half the reserved spots don't get used this time of the year.

See you up there.

LK moved down the hall (then back as an assistant coach)....LL is taking a great opportunity across the country and took the heart of the UWW coaching staff with him. A little different scenario.

There's a lot of change going on in UWW: New Chancellor, new Athletic Director, new head coach, new coordinators. Should be very interesting to see how the football program responds to all this turnover.

I admit, with no personal knowledge of the new AD, this will be a huge undertaking and test for her.  I would feel better is Paul was still in place.  :(
The hiring of the right coach in a timely fashion is critical. Without a recruiting presence on the ground there could be a thin class of incoming Freshmen. This was the concern at SJU two seasons ago and they hired from within.

There will also be competition for recruits from the former staff now SUNY Buffalo. Over the past 5-6 years there have clearly been UWW players who could have played in the MAC, now they have a coaching staff that their high school coaches know & trust.

Another concern is if a number of underclassmen transfer to other WIAC schools. So their decision came down to UWW & UWO (or any other D3 school) and now the coaching staff is gone,do some of them transfer? There is no penalty to transfer,no sitting out a year like in higher divisions.

This hire is going to be huge for the AD. Will she be a hero or a zero? Time will tell.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

That doesn't happen when dealing with a state employment job and all the specific requirements that go into it.  It will take some time.

P.S.  UWW will survive and prosper.  There is a lot more to the success at UWW than the coaches. Please look at the national prominence of the entire athletic program.

This is where I'm at. You've still got a great tradition, great foundation, 3 years of stocked shelves with recruits and you'll have the cream of the crop from DIII HC's knocking on your door wanting a shot. Your location and all the other great aspects of the program remain intact.

My concern is more along these lines. Losing LL hurts. Losing major pieces from the staff hurts. What it can be easy to overlook is that the guy who made the gutsy hire of LL (there was a decent amount of debate - some great internal candidates like Zweifel), Plinske, is no longer the AD to make the next hire. My biggest question is if the new AD has the same instincts? In some ways, the position will attract greater attention. UWW isn't just knocking on the door of National Champ anymore, they've arrived and stayed. On the flip side, LLs don't come along everyday with historic ties to your school.

All in all though, I think chances are way better than not that you'll get a really quality HC and really quality staff. No one is likely to reduplicate what LL just did earlier this year (I mean, 100 - 6 !?!) and a chance to finish out with as many National Titles as he had DIII losses. But I think you'll find yourself still comfortably among the elite of DIII when the dust settles.

Sorry, I'm not being snippy whatsoever (I know it's kind of hard to judge emotion/tone on these boards).  :)
