I wonder what BoBo meant by the comment that Conference games are more competitive. It would seem to me that by their very nature, Playoff games would be more competitive, i. e. closer, since, supposedly these are the teams that have "earned" inclusion by their play during the regular season. I know that's in theory, so please let that slide a bit. Once you get to the Quarter Finals, though, I would think you would have pretty good teams left - as exhibited Saturday in Whitewater.

I would rather believe that Conference games have more emotional attraction since many players and students at the different Wisconsin State system schools know each other from high school, and "bragging rights" are at stake. The weather may also play a part, but it was pretty nice Saturday, and is forecast to be even better this coming week. I would also venture to guess that the Linfield/UWW game will be competitive as well.

Just got done listening to Pat and Keith's National Podcast. As usual, extremely informative. The "rating's grabber" for me this week were the live interviews with Ryan Carlson (Catdomealumi.com) and Josh Smith (Daily Jefferson County Union and D3football.com West Region writer.

I admire what both bring to the table and Carlson's Catdomealumi.com Website is simply outstanding!

Hope to see Keith on Saturday at the Perk!

Did any other Whitewater fan start thinking of that game on Sept. 29, 2007 (The Comeback) during the 4th quarter on Sat?

Yes, in fact footballfan413 was the one who made the comparison after the game on Saturday.

I didn't read that...time to go back and review, thanks 02.

sorry, that was in-person....not on the boards.  ;)

Hmm that's a great question, retagent.  That BoBo guy is one, mysterious dude...

If I could put myself in his head, I bet he meant exactly what he said. After all, BoBo comes from the Howard Cosell School of Message Board Posting (some of you younger guys might have to google Cosell to understand what that means). But, who am I to put words in his mouth?

Where were all the whitewater fans Saturday? I was looking at your attendance figures before the game and was ready to get blown out by the sound and was very surprised to see less than 1800 people there.
A few years back I was at a playoff game at SP and I'm pretty sure Wartburg fans outnumbered pointers that day. Granted that was the opener for shotgun season and as a country boy I understand how that works.

1. Cold weather
2. Price (even though they do give a bunch out)
3. Holidays
4. Deer hunting season

Those are the four main reasons

I thought it was interesting when Keith said he thought the game started tilting back to Whitewater much earlier than everyone on  here thought it did. UWW had closed the gap to 33-30 then the Warty QB went down (which just about everyone on here thought changed the momentum); it was just a matter of time that UWW took the lead for good. I think Keith has it right.

"After all is football a game or a religion?"

Though student attendance isn't what it normally is I did think it was the best it's been in the postseason for the Wartburg game.

Student attendance for college football is down nationwide, from the major D-I schools to the smallest D-III's. I don't think it's a big mystery. Students are simply more interested in other things.

I would agree with your statement a little more if you had qualified it and said that conference games are more competitive than the first couple of rounds of the playoffs, especially for the higher seeded teams. Since UWW is consistently rated one of the better teams in the nation then they get to play the lower seeds the first couple of rounds which make for lopsided games. But once we get to the quarter finals almost all games are competitive, with last week's game against Wartburg being evidence as one of the tougher games UWW has played in this year and they don't get anymore competitive than that one.

No doubt, Wartburg beats any team (not named UWW) in the WIAC.

There have been hard fought, closely contested, quarterfinal games

2005 vs Linfield...44-41
2006 vs St Johns...17-14
2010 vs North Central...20-10
2013 vs Linfield...28-17
2014 vs Wartburg...37-33

and some that have not been as competitive

2007 vs Wabash...47-7
2008 vs Wartburg...34-17
2009 vs Wittenberg...31-13
2011 vs Salisbury...34-14

So it's been a bit hit and miss though you'll get no argument from me regarding how tough Saturday's game with Wartburg was.  They were very good and they clearly could have been a force to deal with in our league as well.  We caught some breaks and made some plays when we had to.  Personally I thought they looked very much like a WIAC team.

Mount Union's website talks about their semifinal (obviously) - But I saw they have tickets for $8 for the game.

Whitewater charges $11.   I though the NCAA set the prices for postseason (just like they set the times).  Not correct?

The NCAA sets the floor, not the ticket price. $8 is the minimum, I believe.

My guess is that it's just a long season. Heck, I don't watch nearly as much NFL and major college ball at this time of year as I do early season.
