Jeesh, Bobo... not only are you an expert on football, but I guess you're an expert on journalism and reporting, too. Who would have thought???
PS... I didn't waste my time watching the game; had you been able to comprehend what I posted, you would have read that...
Carry on...

You should have put the part about not being able to watch the game in the first paragraph, it would've spared me the hassle of reading the next couple paragraphs...bored me so much I never made it down to the bottom.

P.S. ESPN didn't broadcast the press conference - whoever said that? D3Football.com did - obviously, they did it for the fans, who cared enough about this game to watch/listen, unlike yourself. This website did a radio play by play for those who are truly fans who couldn't get the ESPN broadcast, unlike yourself .  ::)

02 Warhawk, it has nothing to do with answering a bunch of dumb questions - the questions are just as dumb if you win (sometimes dumb, dumber, dumbest) - and he would've been there if that had happened. Now if the coach didn't show up, I couldn't care - how many times did he have to say I'm proud of my team to realize he's proud of his team? I personally want to hear from the players - what is so wrong with that? Did any of you hear Jake Kummerow after the game talking with the D3 guy on the field? That was the kind of stuff that is neat to hear - and complimentary...and if players don't speak, or get a chance to speak and we fans don't listen, we miss out on the rest of the story.

I'll give you that about the coaches. Most coaches just give their usual cookie cutter responses to post game questions...they all seem the same. However, every once in a while you get a gem like Wesley's coach Stagg Bowl prediction following their beat down. Oops   ::)    ;D

I have a question and maybe Pat can answer it.   Why was Burke, the losing QB, suppose to appear at the presser anyway?   Is this new because in 05-07, I believe, only the winning players were interviewed after the game.  I confirmed that with one of the interviewees from the 07 game.
Sometimes we have to look heartache in the face and man up as much as this country wants to make us all a winner life does not work that way.

Players from both teams are slated to appear if requested by the media. I don't have my audio archives from 2005-07 handy but I would be very surprised if no players were at the news conference.

For example, Keith McMillan quotes Micheli, Kmic and Kostelink in this 2007 story (although he could have gotten some of this from the locker room):

Thanks for the clarification, Pat.  #33 confirmed to me that only he and members of the Warhawk team and staff were interviewed in the trailer for the official press conference right after the game on 07.     He said that no Raiders were present.  But, as you said, doesn't mean the press doesn't have access to the losing team in other situations like the locker room or field.  Just wanted to clarify if his not showing up was for the official presser and if so, was he being asked to make an unprecedented showing, as the losing QB, (and unprecedented 2 time Gags winner,)  than others have been asked to do before him.  Or did he just hightail it out of the locker room to avoid everybody.

I am not unbiased when it comes to this issue as I still can see the picture of my son after the 05 game, on the field, in a deep squat, head in his hands, crying, with blood on his arm, that appeared in the UWW school newspaper, I believe.  It broke my heart.  As an adult I knew it was, "only a game," but to a 20-22 year old AMATURE athlete, who lacks some life experience, it isn't even close to that.  I won't judge Kevin for a reaction that came within minutes of his losing the last football game he will, more than likely, ever play.  Certainly, not because a journalist is whining about access to him. Will he regret it someday for not, "manning up?"  Quite possibly but that's life at that age, and who among us doesn't have a laundry list of regret from our college days?  ;D
Pierre Garcon refused to go out on the field, with the rest of his team and staff, and shake the WARHAWK'S hands after the 07 game.  Now that is the kind of behavior and reaction after a loss that deserves calling out, IMHO.    >:(

Kevin Burk made his post-game statement to the only people who in the end really mattered.  From the Mount Union Athletics facebook site:

A note to Raider fans from Kevin Burke "This moment right here is one of the worst moments in my life. Giving my absolute best and still coming up short is a gut-wrenching, heart-breaking feeling that I'll never forget. Yeah it's just a game and life goes on, but to devote so much time and work so hard for so many years and end it with a brutal loss is devastating. I failed, but I am not a failure. It was a great run and I cannot thank raider nation enough for some of the best years of my life. I hope y'all had as much fun as I did."

This is a very special young man.  It has been a pleasure to watch him play, and grow both on and off the field.

QuoteThen after 06 Wesley complained about the cannon and got it banned from postseason play after hearing to way too much for their liking the last two years.

I thought all "artificial noisemakers," regardless of size were banned from NCAA playoff games and it's up to the host school to enforce the rule.  Maybe that's a new rule, but I think it's a common one and would be surprise if it was instituted just because of Wesley-Whitewater football.

Back east Widener has a cannon in honor of their ROTC program, which is one of the largest in the country.  I'm usually there with the visiting team but I kind of like the cannon. I assume they shelve it during the NCAA playoffs.

From my understanding it was a NCAA rule, but never really enforced at UWW until the Wesley game. So I think UWW was playing with house money with the canon in the playoffs up until that point. It was probably a matter of time before it went away anyway.

Then it was moved to the top of the hill overlooking the stadium and shot from there.  Unfortunately a different NCAA rep decided that wasn't allowable either and it was finally completely retired.  Which led the student body to begin shouting "kaboom" after scores.

There are two separate news conferences. They don't mix two teams in together after the game. The losing team (generally) goes first, clears out, then after a few minutes the winning team is interviewed.

Yet, however, I read through the cannon postings a couple of weeks ago and the cannon did not go away until the middle of the 2007 playoffs, not right away. I'll go cite the messages from this group and you can revisit them.

I can't figure this cannon guy thing out.  Two years ago we shot the cannon off from inside the stadium at all four home playoff games without any comment.  Last year we shot it off at the first three, again within the stadium, and  then we couldn't for the final game.  This year we've shot it off from within the stadium for the first two games and couldn't for the third.  It will be interesting what happens for the MHB game.  If we're unable to locate him within the stadium he will be on the hill.

There has been an NCAA observer at every playoff game for three years.  If the problem was with the NCAA how do you explain this?

In an ironic twist after each firing of the cannon the smoke drifted over the Wabash bleachers.  Well, with the wind I'm not sure "drifted" is the right word.

Here's a post that cites the timing: Not until the 2007 quarterfinals, when an NCAA observer finally decided to enforce the rule on the books. If you read on you can see me getting nice and pissy with you guys in my younger days. :)

Great game w seniors stepping up big time. There aren't many seniors on this team but those we have will be sorely missed.

On the negative side, I sure hope the quality of UWW's kick coverage and kick return teams isn't indicative of the talent that will be starting next year. UWW was destroyed by Mt in that aspect.

That's what happens when the ball is fielded at the 10-15 yard line. Kicker needs to have more leg on that baby to get it either in the endzone or a lot closer to it. Helps out the coverage team when the runner isn't always getting an extra 10-15 yards right off the bat.

And on the other side -- Mount Union's kick coverage teams were really good this year. They destroyed Wesley in that regard. (And the one time UWW tried to go east-to-west on Mount Union on kick return Friday night, they got pretty well handled as well.)

You are right about that Emma.   As far as looking at next year (even though I am still glowing in the aftermath of the victory!  ;D 8-) ), UWW will be loosing a quarterback, but Nelson has looked pretty good in limited playing time; we will be loosing two awesome wide receivers, two awesome starting corners, a starting safety and a starting defensive end.  Obviously we have a coaching staff to replace/hire as well.  But from an overall talent standpoint we are better than most in terms of how many we graduate.

In my opinion the hardest to replace will be the wide receivers and corners.  While we have a group of young defensive backs several who gained a great deal of playing time during the season and even in the playoffs in nickel and dime packages, it will be hard to replace the talent we had a DB.
