Did you see the game?  As UWW showed on Friday night, Mt didn't whip Wesley's butt because Mt is at an untouchable level.  Perhaps he would have been better advised to self reflect on what his team was lacking that resulted in the embarrassment.

Watched every minute of it.  It was a great game -- the two best teams in D3.  How would Drass have known what was going to happen on Friday night?  We're going to have to agree to disagree, emma.  I think he probably said it because they were murdered in their semifinal game.  Maybe he was hoping?

He certainly was wrong, yeah?

My my my...

Some Warhawks fans here are ripping one person who, after a tough loss, didn't attend a postgame Stagg Bowl press conference...

And ripping yet another, who did speak his mind, after a tough loss, but prior to the Stagg Bowl...

And some aren't ripping Burke for not attending the postgame press conference, but simply stating that he may regret that decision later in life.

And some don't care that Drass spoke his mind after a tough loss, but believe he wouldn't look as clueless about what it takes to win at the highest level had he simply not assumed that both Linfield and UWW would play as poorly and be coached as poorly as his team did and was.

Just to clarify my position as a WARHAWKS fan.

1.  While I think he should have I don't really care one way or the other whether Kevin Burke attended the post game press conference.

2.  If I had gotten my ass kicked like Wesley got their ass kicked I would think the next team in line was in for an ass kicking too.

I should have been more clear with my question.  Did you watch the Wesley v Mt game? We may still disagree, but I want to be clear in my point.
As great as Mt played, Wesley matched them with a level of playing and coaching ineptitude that was astounding.  I have no problem with Drass complementing Mt, rooting for them to win or even saying any team will have a hard time beating them.  But Drass went further.  He said Mt is going to "kick somebody's butt" next "Because they just beat a team up and down the field that won 12 games against some pretty good competition."
The key word here is because.  Drass was wrong.  Just "because" Mt beat Wesley up and down the field isn't reason to believe they could do the same to the winner of the Linfield v UWW game.  Because it's highly unlikely that Linfield and UWW are even capable of playing or coaching as poorly as Wesley did in that game.

Perhaps Drass acknowledged the poor playing and coaching performance and it wasn't carried in the article.

I love you Badger, but I sure as heck am glad you aren't on the selection committee for the new HC.   :)

I drove 4 hours + to see this game and filed a D3 Report with Pat Coleman on the game.  The video of us is contained in the gamestory on this website.

We were dumbfounded at the "little mistakes" which kept adding up.  I, personally, thought the Wesley coaching staff panicked a bit and abandoned a sound run game after they got down 7-0.

My wish list for the new coaching staff.
Duplicate and advance.

-I love everything about the UWW offense.  I am not a fan of the read option, or the pass happy or the triple option/run all the time offenses.  Give me balance and pro style with multiple formations.
-I love the UWW defense.  I am not a fan of the "radar" or amoeba, or relentless blitzing or 2-4-5 or 4-2-5 or other schemes. Give me sound schemes played by disciplined defenders in a 4-3 front.
-I'll take a big improvement in special teams play.

There is a formula that works at UWW and I hope it remains.

Can I just throw in there, as a guy who had to sit through one of those crappy playoff press conferences after being on the losing side as a Sr., I doubt Burke "regrets" not being at this event later in life. We can debate whether it's a big deal he wasn't there, but that seems a lot like projecting one's own disappointment for the no show, onto Burke. Aka, I'm mad he didn't go to that...he's gonna regret that later!

Maybe he feels regret. By I'd wager it's not very likely. Something tells me, when he thinks back on that night, the things he regrets won't be so much that he didn't talk to the media, but rather a few throws he'd want back.

And I'm just gonna clarify and say (without making accusations) that I think we need to be careful not to read too much into a kids character based on one emotional decision after the toughest loss of his career. It's not like he got busted for a DUI/drugs or assaulted a girl on campus, which seems to happen far too frequently with celebrated football players today. I'll take the worst thing we can say about one of D3's stars is that he didn't talk to the press after a crushing defeat. It could be a lot worse.

As for Drass...I love the little shot LL took. That was hilarious. I get Drass being a bit peeved about the blowout, but Emma is right, he's making the connection that Mount will put a whoopin' on the next opponent just because Wesley got dominated. Coaching for Bethel in 07, after our semi blowout loss, I felt the same way about Mount (didn't say it to a reporter, mind you!), but UWW had something to say about the outcome of the Stagg then too!

That said, I like that Drass was frank with the media. It's way more fun and interesting to have players and coaches who don't stick to the 'vanilla script' all the time.

Could not agree more with this entire post and why does this work?   It works because we recruit well for the positions in the trenches and have very good offensive lines and dominant front 7's on defense.   That philosophy allows the excellent skill positions to perform and creates success.    This should not change.

I hear this. But my biggest fear would be not landing the best coach available. Teams have won the Stagg with a lot of different styles. Just look at the list of the top West Region Teams. That scheme/formula has worked great for UWW. But it had a lot to do with the quality of coach who was installing, teaching and play calling that scheme. I'd prioritize the guy way above the scheme. And I realize, those aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, ideally, you'd get both.

I've got a sneaking suspicion UWW won't be scraping the bottom of the barrel for this hire though  ;) :P

My position is similar:

1.  I have no problem with Burke not attending.  He was obviously extremely upset and I do not think at that point he would have done a great job of representing himself or Mount Union in the presser.

2.  I want to thank Coach Drass for the wonderful billboard material.  I hope Lance posted it all over the UWW locker room and used it for motivation.   I watched the entire Mount Union v. Wesley game and it was one of the worst coached games I have ever watched.   Wesley abandoned their run game way too soon and kept putting Mount Union's offense back on the field.  Lets be honest, keeping the Mount offense off the field was one of the major reasons for UWW's success in the Stagg.

Maybe back before the mid 90's. But lately teams that provide a balanced offensive attack have been the teams making it to Salem (UWW/UMU). Triple options, read options, spread offenses, etc only seem to succeed until a certain point in the playoffs.

If UWW can keep recruiting the type of players they have, there's no reason to change their scheme. But yes, it all depends on the coach they bring in.

Yup....

Time of possession:
UWW: 40:20
UMU: 19:40

3rd downs efficiency:
UWW: 12 of 19 (63%)
UMU: 5 of 12 (42%)
