According to RP's only source, LL is losing the defensive line coach he hired.  John Scott coached for two years at Texas Tech before coming to Buffalo. Now he's been hired by the New York Jets.

footballscoop.com says:

"New York Jets: Sources confirm to FootballScoop that University of Buffalo defensive line coach John Scott will join the Jets staff. SI has reported that he will be assistant defensive line coach. Scott coached the defensive line at Texas Tech the past two seasons."

Hopefully, Lance will land a good one to replace Scott.

Third time's a charm in LL's search for a Dline coach?

I hope so. I know he missed out on one great one. I'm assuming Scott is good, given he is headed to the NFL.  I am guessing Lance will get an excellent one.  I think those in D1 coaching circles know this is a ride they want to be on.

Back to football...

University of Illinois third string QB Aaron Bailey, a former highly touted recruit when coming out of Bolingbrook H.S. received a release from his scholarship and will transfer. A condition of this transfer is that he can't go to any Big Ten School or any opponent of Illinois in the next 3 years. He wants to play immediately which means he has to transfer down in division. With the success that #1 had with UWW, and also coming from U of Illinois, would a former 4 star hot shot recuit who probably still thinks highly of himself consider moving to the DIII champion, with a graduating QB? Would UWW even be interested? Northern Iowa is usually where guys like him end up, however.

Well, there's this...

http://host.madison.com/news/local/uw-whitewater-would-take-steepest-budget-hit-among-uw-schools/article_52c6749b-4cc9-53bb-b07e-83c3f227c23c.html

This is no good for anyone.

This is why when people bring up the whole "It's an advantage because UWW is a state school and it's cheaper to attend" I mention that private and public both have advantages.  When bad news like this comes out being a state school sure stinks for everyone in the WIAC.  And I mean every student, not just the football programs.

Bailey was ranked as the 9th QB in the nation by Rivals and 6th by Scout with offers from Ohio State, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebrasksa, and Notre Dame.  If there are no off the field issues, he probably ends up at a better place than Northern Iowa... Might as well be UW-W.  :)

Like Illinois State? They already have their QB - a transfer from Indiana. The MVC feasts on big boy transfers, it seems.

Unfortunately for him, he hasn't lived up to those rankings...was third team at Illinois - not exactly a powerhouse offense - and barely found the playing field. I remember him coming on in relief vs the Badgers this year and nearly brought the Illini back in the game with his legs...didn't see if he could throw the ball, though.

Sometimes a guy just needs a change of scenery, or

Two examples come to mind:

- Big scale: Joe Flacco rode the bench for two seasons at Pitt behind Tyler Palko before transferring to FCS Delaware, becoming a first-round pick, winning a Super Bowl and making approximately $100 gazillion.

- Smaller scale, part 1: also late of Pitt, Mark Myers at John Carroll.

- Smaller scale, part 2: Wheaton's offense sputtered along for five weeks this season before Johnny Peltz, who had been third on the depth chart, took over in the North Central game and played very well the reason of the season.  If the Wheaton coaches had left Peltz on the bench, we never would have known, he would have just been the guy who couldn't get on the field for a pretty good team with an icky offense.  Instead, he took the job starting with the NCC game and Wheaton's offense became a force to match their defense.

QB is a funny position.  Some guys just have the light go on in games, and if the coach struggles to identify the right guy or coach him up, we never find out.  So I'm always careful in dismissing a QB that didn't get on the field at one place because you never know exactly what happened there.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

The last I read, UW-Whitewater is looking for one more game to fill its 2015 schedule. I noticed on Footballscoop.com today that Wesley is looking to fill its schedule on Sept. 5th.  Why not a "feature game" to open the season?  Wesley could get to play at the Perk without snow, ice or excuses. Just saying

OR, for once UWW could actually go to Wesley! :o

That does seem like a helluva game to open a season - somebody make it happen! ;)

That's the year that actually caused a rule change allowing the national committee to consider the prior year's playoff results in "NOT SEEDING" :) teams  when they put together the playoff bracket.  Sending an undefeated defending national champion on the road turned a bit embarrassing for the committee when many people far beyond Whitewater considered it a joke.  UW-W won a hard fought game at NCC, then won by 20 at Wesley, then won the National Championship at Salem. Road Warriors!

I know Wesley is a program with a lot of pride and is eager to get back on the field after the debacle at Mount, but they may want to get their legs under them a bit in their first game rather than taking on UW-W.  I think that's the first weekend, right?

As a fan, I would make an offer to them for the game just to prove a point.  Wesley and their fans make it a yearly issue that they can't field a full DIII schedule because no one will play them...well, offer and let's see about that. Time to put up or shut up. A game at the Perk comes with a cannon - no negotiations on that one!! In the slight chance Wesley would accept this offer (which I don't believe they ever would), then we got our game.  I don't think UWW cares "who" or "when" we play - we just want the game.  UMHB would take the game in the same situation; The Skunk Bears? I think the only way they play us is if the NCAA requires it in a postseason game. Maybe someone can send a note to footballscoop.com and make them aware of this situation and they can broker a deal!!
