So what does everyone think of UWW hiring UWP's Rob Erickson as an assistant coach?

Is that official?

Quote from: Pio425 on February 23, 2015, 09:47:34 PM
I believe so. It just hasn't been announced yet

A search of the UWW faculty and staff directory turned up nothing for Rob Erickson - at the same time John Miech, Kyle Supianoski, Pete Kishline, and Kyle Jacobo are in the directory as asst. football coaches. Rob Erickson I believe was D. Coordinator for John Miech while at Stevens Point, for what it's worth.

I heard a rumor this morning about Craig Smith (OC @ UWO) being in line for an assistant position job at UWW. Anyone hear about this?

Rumor mill in full swing...

You are out-scooping footballscoop.com Oshfb with the rumor!!  They list many assistant coaching rumors/hirings, but nothing about this one. Maybe they need a source if you are willing and able to provide them one!!

From coachingsearch.com:

QuoteWisconsin-Whitewater: Per source, Wisconsin-Platteville defensive coordinator / inside linebackers Rob Erickson has been offered the defensive coordinator job at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Have to wonder if the source is Pio425   :-\

Right after getting my liver cancer Pet Scan results and next round of chemo therapy today I begin my spring project of inundating ESPN with reasons why UW-Whitewater should be an ESPN College Football Game Day location later this year.

If Fargo, North Dakota (North Dakota State) is a Gameday favorite the past couple of years... Why not the Perk and UW-Whitewater?

Sounds good Tom. Praying for good news and strength and perseverance to fight through the next round of chemo. It's a 15 round fight and you are ahead on points! Keep fighting. Every bad day you have is an opportunity to defeat this vicious enemy we all hate so much. Take it's best shot and know a better day will be coming.  Your will and refusal to give up is an inspiration to all around you. Thank you.

Interesting.  Until this rumor is confirmed or refuted, I guess Coach Smith's name is out there on these boards now.  Question for you, oshfb:  How familiar are you with Coach Smith? I am not bringing this up to add weight to the rumor, but assistant coaches are understandably rarely mentioned on these boards. Do you have an opinion on Coach Smith's work?

Assistant Coaches may be rarely mentioned on these boards but Coach Smith is the 2nd in only 2 days to be mentioned.

Personally, I have never met Coach Smith. My familiarity only lies with following UWO since my playing days. Statistically speaking, his offenses have faired quite well in the conference since his arrival. I tried to dig up his bio on http://www.uwoshkoshtitans.com/sports/fball/coaches/index but his name has been removed (under Related Bios drop down).

I offer nothing else to the rumor...simply heard this through a former UWW player yesterday AM.

I'll say this...I probably should have said he "is being pursued" rather than "in line". The former implies UWW is after him while the latter implies it is a work-in-progress.

"Wisconsin-Whitewater (D-III): Per source, the staff at UW-Whitewater is starting to take shape. UW-Oshkosh (D-III – WI) co-offensive coordinator / quarterbacks and receivers coach Craig Smith will be the offensive coordinator, former Augustana (D-III – IL) offensive line coach Brent Allen will handle the OL duties, South Dakota running backs GA Jace Rindahl will coach the linebackers, and UW-Platteville (D-III – WI) defensive coordinator / inside linebackers coach Rob Erickson will be the new defensive coordinator. We understand that it may be another few days for some of these hires to become official because of Wisconsin state hiring procedures."

If this is the team of guys that are joining the current staff, this is inconceivably good news for UW-W.  Between this (if true) and some of the recruits that have "committed" (a word I use reluctantly in D-III) to UW-W, this has been an extremely impressive start for Coach Bullis.

If this happens, there will rightfully be a lot of comment and excitement regarding the new coaches.

Before it all hits, I just want to point out that Coach Bullis, Coach Miech and the other coaches currently on the staff have worked really hard literally since the flight home from the Stagg Bowl to keep the wheel moving during the uncertainty after the Buffalo coaches' departure.  They attacked their duties without regard for what may or may not happen.  Younger guys stepped up and became more involved in recruiting than they had in the past which had to accelerate their development as coaches.  Their efforts kept UW-W in the hunt for prospects that may have completely turned elsewhere because UW-W was in transition.*  Along with Coach Munger and team leaders, they got the current players going  in their off-season workouts with the sense of purpose that is so vital.

Also, I have a lot of respect for Coach Miech who was the loyal lieutenant in all this.  He could have bailed.  He could have "fought" for the job himself or at least passive-aggressively undermined KB's candidacy.  He did neither. As a result the atmosphere at UW-W was significantly different than it was in 07.  Coach Miech has ties to other Top 5 candidates and while he was willing to talk about the strengths of each (as he should), he absolutely refused to get into the comparison thing with KB.  He honored both his co-worker and the candidates he was familiar with.  His position of speaking to the positives and letting the administration decide was perfect.  He and the other coaches also diligently recruited and gave their all for UW-W with out regard to the uncertainty.  So thank you to Coach Bullis, Coach Miech, Coach Munger, and other coaches who worked so hard during a time period that will likely be overlooked when all this is said and done. It was vital work and the success the program experiences in 2015 and beyond will have a lot to do with how you all stepped up in between "eras".

*Also, thank you Coach Leipold and Coach Kotelnicky (who had been the recruiting coordinator) for being EXTREMELY HELPFUL during the transition. Looking forward to watching as you teach them how to POUND THE ROCK in Buffalo!

bleed purple, is it fair and accurate to say regarding Coach Miech, that Stevens Point's loss is our gain. What exactly happened up there?

Is Coach O'Grady still one of the other coaches you speak about? Have you heard if he'll be part of the new staff?

I think it helps maintain order having two long time, successful head coaches with nothing more to prove in the profession as assistant coaches. Sounds like egos's get checked at the door with these guys - all for the greater good!!  I think this process has given us a clear picture of the culture that is present in the athletic department at UWW. I think a lot of fans in the DIII world are/were hoping and praying that this coaching change would blow up in our faces and bring UWW back down to everyone else.  But, I'm believing that is only a pipe dream.

You haven't missed it...but probably won't either until practice opens in August. Scour the local newpapers of the Chicago suburbs, and you'll probably read about some of them who have "commited."

True enough. There won't likely be a list on these boards any time before August. One thing regarding recruits would be interesting to know, though.  If these rumors prove true, how many kids that have been recruited by the new coordinators will make a call to UW-W?  ;)
