Welcome back Ret, I'm looking forward to a season of good natured ribbing with you.

Bleed, I love your "As Camp Breaks" articles on www.warhawkfootball.com.
I think my favorite line of all (and there are many great quotes from the staff) is from OC Coach Smith when asked about his concerns heading into the trip to MS:

QuoteNone. We are ready to go. We all just want to play a game! I've never looked so forward to a 14 hour trip in my life!
So much is said in that simple quote.

Coach Bullis's closing line was great too- his big concern is making sure everybody gets on the bus.  Ahh, the glorious responsibilities as Head Coach.

Thanks for the articles, it's been a real pleasure to read them.

Great read but  the weather last week was not even close to what they are going to get in MS. it isn't going to affect the outcome of the game but they are going to experience heat and humidity like they never have.  Hopefully the trainer is ready for a few cramping players. This is when our two deep and ability to rotate guys in and out will really pay off.

Jackson, MS on Saturday projected:  High of 82, humidity 56%
Whitewater, WI on September 3: High of 87, Humidity 80%

And a good day to you sir.

It should be an interesting season. UWW has a lot of questions going into the season. I will not say this again, but I believe they will have some strong answers to those questions. My Johnnies should be in the mix as well.

In that vein of comaraderie, once the players leave UWW, UMU or wherever, they become "ours." I've been rooting very hard for success for Kumerow, Blanchard et. al. to make their marks in the NFL. Both of those mentioned looked good enough to me. I'll have to watch the others mentioned in the article about other D III alum.

I stand corrected. The Warhawks will now March to victory unhampered by any weather issues.

Hopefully, the Warhawks march in Mississippi will be as brilliant and relentless as Grant's Vicksburg Campaign during the Civil War.

I feel the same way on both counts.  I root for any and all D-III players who get a shot.  I also believe the Johnnies will be in the mix.  I think this is the year they begin making deep playoff runs again.

(Although I have to say, Bobo has been unbelievably diligent in staying away from Bulk19's hook).

I just wanted to eat candy corn pumpkins and lay around re-watching the 2014 Stagg Bowl today, now I have to figure out the hidden meaning in this statement. Thanks bp!! I'm completely baffled...what's this bulk19's hook you speak of?

Absolutely.  My sports friends, work friends, wife and my family must surely grow tired of me pointing out - Hey, that's a D3 guy!

Excellent win for the Hawks. Did what we needed to do.  To answer a previous question, we traveled 60 guys.  A lot of snaps for a lot of reserves. Of course they were a bit choppier than the starters, but that's bound to happen.

Although some will disagree, I think it was wise to limit the passing game for a couple reasons.

First, we were pounding them on the ground. If they don't stop it, no reason to go away from it. The O-line was dominating and had to be having fun. We came down there to FINALLY play a game, not to run a glorified scrimmage. That has always been UW-W. We will pound the rock. If you can't stop it, we are going to keep pounding it. It helps establish our identity within the locker room and beyond. Our passing game is really strong.  The coaches know it and the players know it. Some posters here don't know it. It's ok, you will find out. In fact, by not unnecessarily passing, the coaches are expressing their confidence in the passing game.

Second, as BW observed on the in-game, Belhaven was shooting guys on blitz's all day. Just one missed assignment and some kid could have a free shot at Nelson. Did they strike you as guys we want to expose Nelson to and trust them to make a clean hit?  It just takes one mistake to make it all not worth it.  Our passing game practices against one of the best defenses in the country every day. There's nothing Belhaven would have taught them.

Great start.  Next week another day to develop depth.

I agree with all you said. I would not have thrown the ball either, not just for injury prevention, but to keep the score down. From the first drive it was obvious UWW would not be slowed. The silver lining is the development of depth. The dark cloud is w Finlandia next, the starters will not have been game tested come Morningside.

How does UWW go about prepping for Finlandia?  Perhaps three or four series of scripted plays?

I was able to watch the UB vs Penn State game. UB defense kept them in the game until the end. Unfortunately a massive number of false starts and chop blocks on the UB O-Line prevented any chance of offensive rhythm.
14 total penalties and I'd guess at least 10 were against the offense.
That said, the Penn St D line was superior to the UB O Line.
Kick off and punt coverage were a major contributor to Penn St field position.
LL and staff have some talent on that team and they can certainly clean up some of the issues that hurt them today.

To me it looked like PSU's size and strength just wore Buffalo's defense down as the first half and second halves closed out.

That happened toward the end, but this is the real deal:
QuotePenalties. Yikes. I hardly need to go into detail, but Buffalo committed 10 penalties on offense in 30:26 with the ball. Only one came in the 9:06 that constituted UB's two touchdown drives. Over those two drives, Licata was 12-13 for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Taylor ran for 42 yards. That's what UB was able to do when not shooting themselves in the foot.

No doubt, it is definitely not ideal to have a lack of competitive snaps for our ones and twos before Morningside.  The good news is that Morningside agreed to play us.  This year is a different deal starting with UW-P and UW-O right out of the gate in the WIAC. Far better to have little competition before Morningside (non-con and NAIA) than before UW-P and UW-O.  Hopefully (if Morningside is as advertised), they will help us get ready for high level WIAC game speed.

As far as Finlandia, yes, I would say 3 or 4 series sounds right.

I watched  the Badgers at a sports bar and. The UB Penn State game was on the big screen next to the Badgers. That got me thinking would Wisconsin ever schedule UB I know they did a few years ago but I would rather see a team like Buffalo than Troy.
