Got a few local community people left who've seen all 60 winning seasons.

True, D.O.C.   The couple that sits behind us at home games graduated from Linfield in 1951!   But they gave up on away games a few years ago.   Nice people.

My apologies to all UWW  posters. I did ass-u-me that pg4 was a UWW poster. I will have to go back now and see exactly what he was getting at when he made the comment about SJU being a "one and out" team. It didn't sound complimentary, but, I could be wrong.

pg04 is an East Region poster (I forget which school).  His comment was not a 'slur' on SJU.  He merely wondered if UMU had any idea that UWW would be a perennial Stagg opponent after the first meeting, as opposed to those very good teams that still only occasionally made it to the Stagg.  Considering UMU's domination, a very reasonable question; they had never had a perennially recurring opponent.

You mean like the 10 or 12 institutions that have ever made it to the Stagg?  I get what you're saying, but why SJU, rather than UMHB, Linfield, Rowan etc?

(modified by GS for formatting)

First, Thanks to Ypsi for explaining better than I did.

The reason why I did pick St. John's is because they are the only team other than UWW to win a Stagg Bowl against Mount Union. I thought this was a complement. :).

By golly, you're right!  I couldn't believe it.  But since UMU first won the Stagg in 1993, the only time they lost before UWW came along was in years they got knocked out before they got there.  So UMHB, Linfield, Rowan (and 31 others ;D) never beat UMU in the Stagg

Amazing, right?? I am fairly knowledgeable on D3 and its history despite being accused otherwise  ;D

A bit late on this, but a disappointing end to the Eagles season.  Didn't expect a W, but a 52-7 loss leaves a bitter taste in your mouth for the offseason.

QuoteUW-L finishes 3-7 overall for the third consecutive season, but has 90 players on the roster returning next season — many of whom played in key roles for the Eagles this year.

"We're going to miss guys like Jon Becker and Tommy Young who played a lot for us that we'll lose, but we know we have talent coming back," Dettwiler said of next year's team.

"We have to make sure we're physically ready to compete, as well as mentally ready. I think with our young group this year we weren't always diligent enough with the game plan to execute for 60 minutes. We didn't always have the maturity to always stick with it," he said. "We have a lot of work to do, but we have a lot to work with."

You are right Ypsi. I actually looked at the Stagg Bowl winners AFTER my last post. I was a bit surprised that Ithaca showed up as often as they did. I was aware of the runs that Augustana and UWL had back when.

I know one shouldn't make too much of a quote, but I find this one interesting on many levels.  Terms and phrases like "mentally ready", "weren't always diligent", and "didn't always have the maturity to stick with it", seem indicting to me.

And it's not like the fourth quarter is the only one in which UW-L had problems. They were outscored 144-77 in the first half of games this year.  But the fourth quarter was kind of an embarrassment being outscored 95-13 on the season.

I would think next year would be an important one for his program.

I suspect it's because UW-Oshkosh is also hosting the cross country national championships on the same day. Those races are at 11:00 and 12:30 about 25 minutes from campus. I imagine they requested the later start time so they can adequately staff both events.

OK.  That makes sense.

Why is UWO playing at 3:00 pm?  I was under the impression that playoff games all started at noon local time.

You sure Just Bill?

I "heard" it was so that the UWO players could still go out to their deer stands for the opening day of gun hunting in the morning before playing CSS....  A 12:00 start would have made that nearly impossible.  ;D :D ;)

Not a surprise.  Especially since I've heard the new AD wants to make football a big priority.  Brother played there as well and him and a few other alums were wondering what was going on over the last few years, as the program seemed to be losing more and more.  Curious what the cause was (recruiting, coaching, etc.).  Interesting to see who they bring in.

Will WW's D-Coordinator Rob Erickson be a candidate?  He was a finalist for the WW job last year.

Wow. Good question.
I won't hold it against him if he's pursuing a career goal, but I hope he stays.

I was a teenager in Central New York when Jim Butterfield's Ithaca teams began their Stagg Bowl runs in the '70s. The Syracuse Herald-Journal used to cover the Bombers' playoff runs pretty heavily, which in retrospect seems like something of a surprise. I guess that the consistent futility of the Orangemen on the gridiron during that era left the Central New York media scrambling to find a local college football team worth covering.

Just for the record, there have been 37 different schools in the Stagg Bowl.  (The last decade just makes it seem like there have only been a handful.)

(BTW, you must be a young'un.  An oldtimer might have mentioned Wittenberg or Ithaca, who were dominant before UMU ever made it to the Stagg, or Dayton who went 5 times before going D2 a long time ago.  And UMHB and Linfield have each made it only once.  SJU has been a long time very good team, but has only made the Stagg 3 times spread out over a lengthy period of time.)
For the record Linfield had been to 5 national championships in NAIA D2 before joining NCAA D3
