Any news out of La Crosse on the Head Football coach?

badgerwarhawk

Wasn't the target date for hiring the new coach sometime in Feb?  I seem to have a recollection of someone posting something along those lines a while back and commenting on it's impact on recruiting.

Any news out of La Crosse on the Head Football coach?

This is the only recent article that I have seen:

http://www.wxow.com/story/30970114/2016/01/14/uw-l-football-coaching-search-on-schedule

116 applicants, open forums hopefully scheduled the first week of February.

This is slated to appear in the La Crosse Tribune paper tomorrow:

http://lacrossetribune.com/sports/uw-l-narrows-field-for-new-football-coach/article_5c2da409-c3e5-5a88-af4e-2659ba74de1b.html

116 candidates pared down to a Sweet 16 who were interviewed via phone/Skype last week, with a Final Four to be announced possibly by the end of this week. They will then get on-campus interviews...

Wow- another UWP D coordinator. As Schmidt has only been is his role for one season, he must have some other very strong qualities.

I'm not familiar with the other three, but I'd be surprised if Zebrowski couldn't bring UWL back to national prominence.

5WOL over on the IIAC page noted that he was the DC at Dubuque prior to this. FWIW

This is all correct.  A few years as Dubuque's DC and one year as Platteville's DC.

The connection for him is that he played football and baseball at UWL, being football team captain in 2007 and helping win a conference title in 2004.

I know there is a lot of support for him within the UWL football family.  A young coach that played during the last successful period of UWL football and has risen quickly in the coaching ranks?  Sounds good to me.

As with UWEC, I can't imagine Zebrowski would take the salary that we could offer, although he would be a great choice.  Caledonia's coach has been successful, but need an incredibly impressive interview and plan to get the job.  I'm not familiar with the Illinois Wesleyan coach, but the more I look at his resume the more I like his experience.

Overall, this is not as strong of a group of candidates as 2011.  Coach D was not the first choice for the job then, let's hope UWL can get the right guy this time.

Is UW-L's recreation center progressing?

http://www.weau.com/home/headlines/Approval-for-UW-Ls-Recreational-Eagle-Center-expansion-starts-with-students-254270721.html

https://www.uwlax.edu/planning-construction/ says this project will start this year and be completed in 2017.  That link shows all of the construction projects on UWL's campus currently.  Quite a bit going on.

Why would Zebrowski keep his hat in the ring of final four (preventing another candidate from the opportunity) if he wasn't willing to accept the salary? I don't imagine the salary range is unknown to the candidates is it?

Supply and demand.  Creating the perception that he is in demand and keep his name out there for other jobs.  Happens all the time in D1.

I hope that he is serious because I think he would be a great coach, but it isn't typical for D1 position coaches to drop down to D3.

From what I've heard around Platteville is that Schmidt is a players coach but sometimes assistant coaches are players  coaches by design.  Platteville's defense  has been  good in recent years we lost coach Erickson to WW and didn't miss a beat when he was replaced by Schmidt.  I hope he stays at Platteville losing him to LaX and Robinson and Belken to graduation means Platteville will have some holes to fill on defense.

I'm sure you're right about it not being typical for D1 position coaches to drop down to D3.
That said, Z has first hand experience watching it happen successfully. LL dropped down to D3- and hired Z for the OC position in his first season. Both went on to achieve great things. Maybe Z sees a successful UWL stint as his path to D1 head coach some day?

Maybe he does - but the UWL program is in no way set up for success in the same way that UWW was when LL took over.  Even wearing my maroon colored glasses, I can't see anyone looking at the UWL job as part of the path to a D1 HC position.
