So the game notes are out for Whitewater vs TCNJ over on uwwsports.com.  Includes a roster and a two-deep.

But the two-deep doesn't include Nelson or Hudson or Shier on offense.  I see a few mistakes on the game notes (i.e., Jarrod Ware is a freshman again on the roster) - Hmmmmmm .......

Odd indeed.
Taking a look at the full roster, UWW has some Giant O Linemen and Tight Ends.

Interesting to note here is that Ryan Kruser, UWL Men's Basketball player for the last three years, has come out for the football team for the first time.  He's listed as a starting wide receiver, kick returner and also punt returner.  Looks like he might have some of the explosiveness that the Eagles have been missing the past few years.

Note: I didn't try to correct the class standing of players.  KS pointed out an error.  I noticed Drew Patterson is listed as a sophomore and I think he's a freshman.

The roster isn't final, yet. The NCAA allows a team to add to the roster, but not take people off of it. In other words, if a player is listed, the year is immediately counted as a year against his eligibility. The only way that can be reversed is through the medical red-shirt protocol. There are often guys who are a little banged up and the coaches want to be sure there aren't any negative surprises before they put them on the roster. There are a couple of guys who will be added to the roster who will be real factor this year. I'm guessing the final roster will be out tomorrow and they will be on it because they are expected to be fine.  That is also the reason UW-W waits until the last minute to even put out a roster. The last thing the coaches want to do is burn up a year of eligibility for a kid who will be out six or seven weeks because of a slight hamstring pull.

BW, Patterson is a sophomore. He played for Western Illinois last year.

Eagles, your opinion about a few things on that roster. One complaint and problem with the previous coaching staff was their philosophy to go with lighter, but possibly more nimble, guys in the trenches. Do you think the new coaching staff has sufficiently addressed that problem?  Also, depending if you're a glass half full or glass half empty kind of person, wonder what your thoughts are about a guy who hasn't played football in at least 3+ years (Kruser) becoming the starter at WR and basically taking over the special teams return positions?  Maybe he's just a beast of an athlete, but if so what was he doing the last three years, besides playing hoops when the football team could've really used his talents? Kinda defines the state of the Eagles receiving corps when a guy who hasn't played football in many years comes in and has the talent to be one of your most valuable players. What are your thoughts?

BTW, thanks for posting all these articles, it saves a lot of time finding stuff.

Since knowing nothing and having a question addressed to someone else has never kept me from commenting before, I will comment.  ;)

If I were a fan of a team in the Eagles' position, I would simply be glad to have him. This is a new regime that didn't even have a full off-season to recruit. Their development of the roster hasn't even begun yet.  It doesn't necessarily mean they don't have other solid players, but a special athlete can make a real difference. We will find out soon the degree to which Ryan will produce, but hats off to him for getting on the football field. Who knows, maybe Coach Schmidt is firing up the whole school and Ryan caught the fever!  In the long run, the people that have to get fired up about football is the administration. If that happens, everyone will begin to understand why long-term Warhawk fans still consider UW-L a huge rival.

Now you can await ScreamingEagles' much more informed answer.

I think that it would be way too early to judge the size of the O and D lines when the new coaching staff has only been on the job for seven months.  From everything I've read, Coach Schmidt's philosophy will be to get back to old-school UWL football with physical and big linemen.  If you look at the freshmen linemen on the team, you'll see some good size for the most part with a smaller guy or two.  We'll see two years from now what they look like, if we're still starting 250 pound O-Linemen, then maybe that's just the reality of the kids UWL can recruit - although I can't see that happening, looking at the guys UWW and even UWSP put out there each year.

In regards to Kruser, I agree with bleedpurple.  I'm glad to have the best athletes possible - if that means a basketball player can step in and be the best receiver we have, I'm glad to have him.  I didn't know anything about him, but a quick google search shows he was a football state champ with Waunakee and was their leading receiver and kick/punt returner (sound familiar?).  That's a great high school football program, so I would be inclined to think he's just a good football player who wanted to play basketball in college.  As far as Coach Schmidt is concerned, the atmosphere around the football program was pretty bad for the past few years that it's no surprise Kruser chose not to play for the previous coaching staff.  Schmidt is a really positive guy and very engaging, so I could definitely see him talking someone into coming out for the team.

A sub-point that was buried in one of the Tribune articles - Mike Santucci, who was UWL's slot receiver and kick/punt returner for the past two years, is out for the season with injury (not sure what).  Would have to imagine he would have held onto his spot if he stayed healthy, but once it turns into an open competition it gives a newcomer more of a chance to show his skills and win the job.

Styles clash in Eagles' season-opener

QuoteTHREE THINGS TO WATCH

NEW OFFENSE: Under new coach Mike Schmidt and offensive coordinator Jake Landry, the Eagles' offense will certainly be hoping to improve on the 15.3 points per game last year's group scored. Quarterback Tarek Yaeggi, making his first start for UW-L, will be a big factor in that. If Yaeggi and his veteran group of receivers can make a few big plays, the Eagles should be able to score on Luther's defense.

TRIPLE OPTION: Luther's attack is old-school, but it can be effective. UW-L's new 4-3 defense will need to be sound in its gap discipline and its tackling to have success in slowing the Norse down. All four of the Norse's top runners from last season's team, including Christian Moore (151 rushes, 1,040 yards, 14 TDs) and Brady Letney (200, 679, 11).

FIELD CONDITIONS: Northeast Iowa had bad flooding last week after nearly 8 inches of rain fell in one night. Norse players helped place sandbags on homes near rivers, but the team's scrimmage against UW-Stevens Point was moved to Stevens Point. It's been mostly dry this week in Decorah, but it may hamper things if the field is muddy.
