From a WIAC perspective, I am really interested in the UWO at UWSP game.
UWSP was within 4 points of UWP with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, 28-24.  UWP then went on a bit of a run.

Sounds like you and D3 Keith have the mental telepathy going at full bore.

I don't know what this is in reference to.  Is Pat interested in this game too?
More importantly, does he know what happened to Kyle Larson?

Quick hits this week:

Keith's take:
QuoteUW-Oshkosh has to bounce back. UW-Stevens Point is 4-1 and trailed UW-Platteville by only four in the second half last week.

Ahh, thanks.

I'm curious if posters feel there will be an upset of UWO, UWW or UWP in conference play this season.  I assume if there is, it will be at the hands of UWSP or UWL.

Obviously, some of you drive by snipers are thinking Bobo is being a bit combative.  I want to be clear that my only point is that we cannot use UWL's first five games this season as a litmus test for concluding La Crosse is back to it's pre-2003 form. Anyone who thinks otherwise isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Even the one and only Guru stated UWL is not ready for the Warhawks. Hard not to agree with him in this case.

To be fair, their 2006 squad had a very good playoff game against UWW and beat USD to finish 9-2.

Given where UWL had fallen though, regardless of competition, they weren't even winning many of these games (against the bottom feeders) the last few years. The backend of the schedule is much tougher. But this start is definitely something the new coaching staff can build on, regardless of how things finish out. Players are no doubt much more engaged for the second half of the season. And you've got on field evidence to present to recruits.

Congrats UWL- you have some playmakers and a heck of a QB.

Competitive day in the WIAC for the top 3.
Kyle Larson spotting, he is playing at UWSP now.

QuoteThe point is this — if the Eagles pull off the upset for the ages, it'll be because they won the game. Whitewater won't give it away.

Darn, what a revelation...I always thought Whitewater did it with smoke, mirrors, and illusions.

BTW SE, how is La Crosse's video feed performing these days...will it be up for the task this weekend? Is there audio included or is it like Platteville's - only video?

It's not the quality of what UWW produces, but it has never cut out on me.  Decent quality with the radio stream laid over the top.  Poor camera work the times that I've watched.

Thanks, that's all the matters. UWW isn't that great, imo. The two announcers take being impartial a bit too far - I would rather hear homerism out of the university students than their constant praising of the opposition.

Need to give credit to Yeaggi's WR's ... they won EVERY one on one battle. They schooled the Warhawk corners esp. after Hasty left with an injury. If it hadn't been for the pick 6, another INT in the EZ,  and his fumble, he probably leads UWL to a huge upset. Best when running the short timing routes, to avoid a rush. But he torch the UWW defense so many times with an accurate deep ball. Once again,  Whitewater with A LOT to work on this week. This team is far from a polished product.

Great effort by the Eagles. Turnovers killed us. Still, we look more like a legitimate WIAC contender than we have in years. We are getting there.

Was it just me or did anyone else miss the first  LaCrosse TD because they cut to a butter ad, miss the WW interception in the end zone because they cut to a UStream commercial, miss the blocked FG because the screen simply went black and miss the Eagles converting a 3rd and 14 for a Nascar ad?  WTH, every time something exciting happened my feed was showing something else.  Otherwise it wasn't too bad.

We have got to clean some things up and clean  them up soon.   There's no way we'll advance deep into the playoffs giving up the kind of yardage that we are and converting on fewer than a third of our third down attempts.

Looks like the QB situation has sorted itself out.

I thought the first one was for the cartoon network and the other ads was for a children' s dvd that had some purple thing eating sandwiches...but yes, ustream did those ads absolutely at the strangest times...a couple of them came just a few seconds after a stoppage in play for change of possession.

The other thing is I like are games when you don't really notice the job the officials are doing. But, the announcers were constantly and continually talking non-stop about the officiating because the color guy was an official.

Congrats to the Hawks on a good road win and congrats to UW-L for a hard fought game. Without a doubt Coach Schmidt has the program moving in the right direction.  I think the sleeping giant that is UW-L has awoken which will make the WIAC even more fun and even more competitive.  Here are some thoughts:

Tarek Yaeggi is really good. He has a great arm and he's a good athlete. He put some throws spot on against some pretty good coverage, especially on third down.  As Bobo mentioned, he also threw some great deep balls. I think because of Yaeggi and a couple of their skill guys, the Eagles' offense is ahead of their defense right now, but they are on their way. I definitely give them shot against Point. They are a good team.

Without a doubt, we have things to clean up.  But we have never been known to peak in game 6. Even with all these yards, I still believe it will be really hard to beat UW-W throwing 50 times in a game. It plays into our takeaway mentality. Between interceptions, sack/fumbles, and the hits we get on guys catching short passes, there are just too many opportunities for that "killer" turnover when a team can't run on us.

As Emma pointed out last week, we continue to be a defense giving up lots of yards (HUGE yards today), but not all that many points. The defense yielded 22 and scored 7 today for a net of 15.  I'd be much more concerned if we were giving up a lot of yards rushing. But we definitely need to improve the pass defense. I think the over/under for how many passes Point throws next week is 55.

Offensively, Drew Patterson is a beast. As I text a friend tonight, I'm not sure if i am more impressed with his speed or his power.  Glad we cleaned up the snap issues and the penalties.  No turnovers is good. But what I am most impressed with is the ability to put together a critical drive when we need it most. Three straight weeks now, we have faced a fourth quarter deficit. Two weeks ago, Platteville takes a 24-20 lead. UW-W next possession: a 71 yard TD drive.  Last week, Oshkosh took a 14-10 lead.  UW-W next possession: a 72 yard TD drive.  Today, La Crosse takes a 22-21 lead.  UW-W next possession: a 75 yard TD drive.  In each case, the defense made it hold up.

Those three drives you mentioned all have one thing in common.  OC Smith stops screwing around with low percentage play calls.
I'm losing my confidence in him and I'm worried he just can't adjust his UWO styled play calling to the type of athlete UWW has.

Agreed, he needs to stay in the press box (or better yet, stay on the team bus) without a headset. That way, he isn't allowed to screw with any one on the offense. How many times does Gumina and Campbell have to turn to the sidelines at Smith throwing their arms out as if to say, "What?" for anyone to realize Smith tries too hard to mess with the offense. Sometimes Smith's offense takes on the look of a Chinese fire drill.

That sort of thing has happened to me every time I watch a UStream broadcast.  I'm pretty sure those broadcasts aren't produced per se...the program just drops ads in intermittently.  It's definitely frustrating.  We've had a few teams in the NCAC use UStream in the past, but this year I was thankful to see that all of the conference schools had gotten away from it.  UWW's influence on the on-field product in the WIAC has been obvious...hopefully member schools will also follow UWW's web stream example as well.

Is the "type" of athlete at UWW really much different than the type of athlete at UWO?

From the outside, I would say the athletes are pretty similar when it comes to talent, however UWW seems to have MORE of them....  Or no?

I guess I meant the HD stream from Whitewater is light years ahead of UWL, and you guys have camera work where you can actually see downfield plays.  I don't think I'll ever buy Lost Lake Amber having seen that commercial so many times now.
