Those three drives you mentioned all have one thing in common.  OC Smith stops screwing around with low percentage play calls.
I'm losing my confidence in him and I'm worried he just can't adjust his UWO styled play calling to the type of athlete UWW has.
Is the "type" of athlete at UWW really much different than the type of athlete at UWO?

From the outside, I would say the athletes are pretty similar when it comes to talent, however UWW seems to have MORE of them....  Or no?

That's a good question and I'm sure opinions will vary. When I originally posted I was wrestling with using that terminology.
Ultimately I think you're right that UWW probably has a greater number of ready to play and succeed athletes.

When I think of type of athlete for UWW I think of not only skill, size, the technique and speed, I also think of style.
I think one of the considerations for a recruit is style of offense. Kids that are familiar with UWW's style and like that style will likely prefer to play there.
UWW has the type of players to be extremely successful in an offense that sticks to a bread and butter of traditional play calls- strong running and a passing game that features outs, ins and slants. Mixing in bubble screens and bombs is fine occasionally.
As of late, UWW stalls on offense when it gets away from those core plays and they drive down the field to win games when they stay true to them.

I loved what I saw from the Eagles outside of two things:  turnovers and field goal kicking.  The one thing that Coach Schmidt hasn't figured out yet, and maybe won't until 2017 with a new kicker, is field goals and extra points.  That's not what cost us this game, but we've had quite a few blocked and missed which might cost us in the next few.

Yaeggi has a ton of talent, by far the best QB we've had in a long time.  He threw some balls into tight places on 3rd and 4th down and our WR's made plays.  He did make some poor choices, like the INT in the end zone instead of throwing it away, resulting in turnovers that were the difference in this one.  The fumble by Bailey in the 4th while we were going in to tie the game was the ultimate killer.

Excited and impressed by our WR's, we've got 4-5 deep that can go out and make plays.  I know someone posted "what would we do without #1 Kruser" but look at this stat line from the WR's:
     - Oxton: 11 catches for 154
     - Kruser: 9 catches for 62
     - Marski: 8 catches for 141
     - Holcomb: 3 catches for 29 and two touchdowns

Pretty spread out when you look at the stats.  UWL had advantages in total yards (506 to 339), first downs (25 to 19), passing yards (401 to 166) and didn't punt once the entire game.  In the end, the Eagles didn't have the horses to hold up in the trenches and stop Patterson down the stretch when we needed it - he's a fantastic back.  Completely agree with those of you confused by screen passes to TE's when you've got the best player on the field at running back and your line has a definite physical advantage.  When you kept it simple and handed him the ball (or called a screen), you went right down the field.  Eagles D wore out in the end, and we're still not big enough on the interior d line to stop UWW.

I think this game showed that UWL is back in the top half of the WIAC and can compete with anyone.  Yesterday was a record crowd at Roger Harring Stadium - let's hope those fans keep coming and we can build on the momentum Coach Schmidt and the team have built so far.

Turnovers doom Eagles against No. 2 Whitewater

Quote"I'm so proud of our guys, there's a lot of days ahead for this group. (Whitewater's) the best team in the country. We can talk about Mount Union and Oshkosh, but that's a really good football team and our guys stood in there," Schmidt. "It shows you that we shouldn't back down from anybody at anytime. We can play with anybody around."

Forgot to mention in my previous post that Yaeggi and co. played yesterday without our #1 WR, Samuel Zwieg.

Was it just me or did anyone else miss the first  LaCrosse TD because they cut to a butter ad, miss the WW interception in the end zone because they cut to a UStream commercial, miss the blocked FG because the screen simply went black and miss the Eagles converting a 3rd and 14 for a Nascar ad?  WTH, every time something exciting happened my feed was showing something else.  Otherwise it wasn't too bad.

We have got to clean some things up and clean  them up soon.   There's no way we'll advance deep into the playoffs giving up the kind of yardage that we are and converting on fewer than a third of our third down attempts.

Looks like the QB situation has sorted itself out.

I missed all of that.  ;) ;)

Eagles getting well deserved votes for the top 25.

UWW defense looked tired and slow during the game. Both the front seven and the secondary had rough games. Although we had 3 sacks we weren't able to apply enough consistent pressure to knock the QB off his game. It was certainly not the type of line play we have come to expect. The QB got rid of the ball fast but we should be used to that by now. LX is a legitimate top 25 team and should have garnered more votes than they did. Hopefully the QB didn't sustain an injury that will keep him out, he is definitely a gunslinger.

Hello everyone. I have been a long time lurker of these boards (since around 2009 season). I'm just now finally getting around to commenting.  UWW grad in 2009.

I was hoping for a more dominant performance Saturday but uwl is not to be taken lightly in the future. Was the close game a product of the previous 3 game grind?

Go Hawks!

Been awhile for me on board but thought about a nice conversation I had with an old MHS friend this past summer.  Mike had just accepted the UWL football job and was excited but very concerned about the late hire, being behind in recruiting, money available for assistant staff, awesome league he was heading into, etc.  Well, as I watched him dismantle Stout and still hear everyone saying he hadn't played anyone yet and then see his battle with WW, I decided to make public how impressed I am with his entrance into the league.  Way to go Mike.  Menomonie is very proud of you!

As for Stout, I can say this with confidence:  We are better than EC.  "Take that, EC."  Only Badgerwarhawk will appreciate that last quote!

Welcome!

As you've probably noticed from watching the games, UWW might be a little thin in the d-back department. Some players that started the season haven't been playing (I assume because of injuries?). UWW's thinning depth in the secondary was tested in La Crosse. Also, their QB played fantastic and was throwing darts all over the field.

UWSP won't be any easier, that's for sure. Hopefully we get healthy and iron some things out on defense.

On offense, UWW seems to score when they absolutely have to. I wish they would apply that same urgency for the entire game...not just when their backs are against the wall.

Wow. Sad day for UWW. Just read that The Voice (Tom Pattison) passed away yesterday.  :'( Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

He was a huge presence within the UWW athletic community, the broadcast booth, booster clubs and these boards.

Tom will be missed.

Sorry about the loss to the UWW and WIAC community. Prayers from here.

An incredibly sad day for Warhawk Nation.  His dedication and support and coverage of our program was second to none.  Such a loss. Please, keep us posted regarding the service, Bleedpurple, and Co.  We are in Minnesota this week but would like to attend if possible.

Rest in peace, Voice.  Cancer may have taken you from us in the end but it never beat you!!   :'( :'( :'(

LOL, look what the cat dragged in.

I hadn't read your entire post until I went to quote it so I could respond.  But my very first thought when I saw that you had posted was that I bet when La Crosse scored first you said to yourself "Take that WHITEWATER!"

So I think I'll share the story.  Several years ago when the WARHAWKS hosted Stout and the Blue Devils scored the first points of the game Stoutguy's radio associate uttered the now infamous phrase "Take that WHITEWATER."  His glee however was short lived as the WARHAWKS scored multiple touchdowns after that and easily won the game.  I've always known that it wasn't Stoutguy who said it but I've never let him forget it.

It's really nice to hear from you again SG.  I hope all is well with you and yours.  All of mine are well though my wife recently fell and broke her shoulder which has prevented me from attending out of town games.  Mike Schmidt is doing a fantastic job in La Crosse and I can tell you that from my conversations with Coach Bullis he has a great deal of respect for him.   Some of us thought La Crosse would be an easier win than it was.  I even told a few people that I wasn't "worried about La Crosse."  But I assure you no one on our staff felt that way.  The Eagles are for real.   Which is a good thing for their fan base and for the WIAC.

I hope you'll drop in occasionally and share your take on things with us.
