UWO Titan 78

I'm still recovering from the loss and I'm not done talking about football, so I'm looking ahead to see what we have returning next year. Offensively, we lose 4 HUGE pieces (Kasper, Hecker, Mentkowski, and Ty Summers at center).  Kasper is the biggest loss on this list. We don't have any experience at QB remaining on the roster, and losing a guy with 50 games played at the position will be nearly impossible to replace. We have 3 frosh QBs on the roster and whatever is in the grey-shirt pipeline. This will be a key component regarding how quickly we can compete next year. My guess is Johnny Duranso gets the first shot. I only say this because he was our holder and was highly recruited coming out of Arrowhead. The rest of the offensive cupboard is hardly bare. We will return 4 of 5 starters on the line, including 2 first-team all-conference players at guard (Powers and Wendorf). That should allow the new center to come in and be comfortable. We return our starting TE (Moon) who is a good lead blocker and caught 10 passes for 86 yards. We lose Hecker, but I don't expect too much drop off at the RB position with our o-line and the trio of Gerhartz (119/792 yards), Peerenboom (62/372), and Walton (53/361) returning. We lose 4 WR off our 2-deep, but I expect next year to be the Todarello show (38/309 rushing and 32/419 receiving) with Kallas (12/223) stepping in to fill one of the WR spots. If we can find a good QB (and I have faith in the recruiting capabilities of this staff), I think we will be above average on offense. Defensively, we were young this year. We will return 9/11 starters on defense. We will return 3 of our top 5 tacklers. We return 2 first-team all-conference players (Jennings and Yoder) and 3 second teamers (Heimer, Skornicka, and Plewa). We have difference makers on every level, and I'm sure a year of seasoning will make this unit better. I'm optimistic heading into this offseason. If we can lean on our running game and defense early in the season and allow a QB to develop, we will again make some noise in the WIAC and beyond.

ahhh...the good ol' days

I miss them already.

Now why'd you have to go and do something like that!
I sure do miss the Stagg Bowl atmosphere.

I love this quote from Coach L: "We were not going to abandon the run game," Leipold said. "We always felt that maybe teams got away from that when Mount got up on them and they just started steamrolling people."

A lesson a little late for UWO.

If only uww had come up with a catchy mantra for that. .... ;)

LL is correct.  Been following Mount for 25 years and they have the knack for burying teams when the opponent cracks.  Seen it too many times for it to be coincidence.   Stick to your guns and make Mount play clean for 60 minutes.  That's  typically your best bet to beating them.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

But during LLs time at UWW I don't think they were ever in a situation to even consider abandoning the run game. Most teams that panic and abandon the run again Mount usually fall behind 14-21 points early. Was UWW ever in that situation?

Not saying it's not good advice, It just doesn't seem particularly relevant to UWW

Also watching LLs Buffalo team run a spread is quite jarring. Surprised he didnt bring his pound the rock philosophy with him.

I stand corrected, I just read the 2006 stagg recap where
Mount lead 28-7 and uww came back to make it close. I've only been following mount since 2009 and I know none of those games featured Mount jumping out to a big lead.

Congratulations to Brett Kaspar, winner of the Gagliardi Award.
From what I have read and seen, this player is the ideal for this selection.
Mount Union salutes you and the model you set for young men.

Agreed. Congratulations to Brett Kasper.  Very well deserving of an award that to me is more meaningful than the Heisman because it is about more than just football.  He deserves the honor.

Congratulations, Mr. Kasper!  Well deserved.

A big congrats to Brett Kasper. Nice to see someone with your resume get the recognition he deserves.
With more people like you, the future will be in good hands. Best to you as you move on! 🏆

Allow me to add my congrats to Kasper.  He's a very deserving honoree.

Big congratulations to Mr. Kasper and good luck with his future. It sure seems that he has a good head in his shoulders and will be successful in whatever he chooses.

I'm not totally surprised, but intrigued that he's only the 2nd non-private school student athlete ho win the award. I realize D3 schools are typically smaller, private schools. It's just an interesting note.
