I wonder if UWP will break through any time soon? 7 consecutive years with no more than 3 losses.
Are they too reliant on the passing game?
I think so. I think it especially hurts them in goal line situations when the defense doesn't have to concern itself with covering deep. Also, poor weather games tend to hurt teams reliant on the pass. And we are in Wisconsin, soooo...

Wouldn't the slant work well in that situation?   ;D

Sure would, if the defense is dumb enough to give up the slant on the goal line.  ;D

A rhetorical question for sure.

Only New England could stop a goal-line slant, likely credited to ongoing spy-gate practices.

Mr. Ypsi

WW, there very much is such a thing as being overly reliant on passing.  The Detroit Lions haven't had a rushing game since Barry Sanders retired.  With no serious threat of a rushing attack, opposing defenses can key on the passer.  Matthew Stafford has shown that he CAN be an elite passer, but he probably gets roughed up more than any other QB in the NFL.  (Of course, it doesn't help that the the OL is sub-par as well.)

I know that our defense works very hard to make a team one dimensional.  They feel it gives them an advantage.

UWP is certainly a contender, and I might have to reconsider them in the highly regarded (by no one but me) WW WIAC preseason poll. In this era of football, I don't think there's such a thing anymore as being "too reliant" on passing, IMO. They got a good passer back in Earl (presuming he's back). I never saw UWP play last year but a pal of mine did -- says the only game they got beat in was Oshkosh. Outplayed both UWL and UWW, but not on the scoreboard.

I also don't think poor weather has nearly the effect on passing games it gets the credit for. I know there were some rainy regular-season Saturdays but the worst "poor weather" game I saw was Mount Union and Oshkosh -- 20 mph winds, gusts 25-30, 20 degrees, snow showers. They still managed to combine for more than 600 yards passing.

Who knows how that game would have turned out if they hadn't turned the ball over three times.

I think I see what you did there BW and I like it.

Despite the rules changes and advancement of the passing game, football is still a physical game. There are many moving parts and variables, but the emotional lifeblood is winning the physical battles.
Pass blocking doesn't generate the same rush as run blocking, for those on the field, on the sideline and in the stands.

In addition, "Pioneers"????

WW

Welllll Patriots seem to do just fine with a passing game that consistently outproduces the run game by a significantly greater proportion than the rest of the league. This argument seems fated for a rhetorical rabbit hole. I'm not saying a run game is unnecessary, but I think the Pios 128 yd/game average last year is more than enough to keep a defense honest. I can't think of a team in D3 or any modern football that I've watched and decided, "they pass too much." Maybe the Favre 6-pick playoff game...

BW, the killer was the 4Q pick at the 2 -- after a 95-yard drive. Ouch. Credit to UWW for making a play.

emma17

WW I completely understand your point and logic regarding the Pats and all.
For me, it's just different. I can watch certain teams that pass more than they run and still see the physicality. Others, not so much.  Mt Union as an example. They pass a lot, but I still see the physicality. UWW passed a good amount the last two championship years yet they were very physical.

Actually, I think he was just being a smart a$$. But maybe that is a valid form of rhetoric. I guess I should hope it is!!

I didn't think he was being a wise guy at all. He simply asked a question that, as you know, requires no answer from me. The slant route is like fishing, milk duds, funny people, ESPN Classic Football games and happy children to name a few- they are good ALL the time.

I am planning a trip to Door County in late September and wanted to know if you guys know anything the wife and I shouldn't miss.  There's only so much the guidebooks and TripAdvisor etc. can tell you.  Thought I would try and get some info from those in closer proximity to Door County than me (I live in MI).  I do most of my posting in the CCIW Room, but do lurk here from time to time. Since there is still a few weeks till things start to really get cooking for the 2018, and the offseason is always a bit slow, I feel comfortable asking on here.  If you don't want to clog up the board feel free to PM me.  Thanks!

keep driving till you get to Washington Island unless mini golf and T-shirt/fudge/ice cream shops are your thing. Might be more pleasant in September. Couple nice golf courses, none are can't miss.

Help out a guy from Ohio. Where is Door County? And why would anyone want to go there? That's a serious question. Not making fun since I never heard of it until today. And MiacMan, do they serve Milwaukee's Best there? Don't know about WW. ☠🍺
I'm old! I get mixed up and I forget things! Go Everybody! 🏈 ☠

Ya know how Wisconsin looks like a mitten? It’s the thumb part. Once quaint tourist/vacation destination, now overrun by Illinoisans who drive 90 though our state to get there and complain incessantly about the speed of the service at the restaurants once they arrive. I’m not sure why you’d want to go there.
