UW - La Crosse announces recruiting class...

82, they certainly have the numbers.
o
Key-ripes!!! That's a lotta kids

Looking at their roster from last year I counted 81 potential returning players.  With 82 recruits their preseason roster is approaching Mount Union size.

As long as they are allowed to play only 11 at a time, 81 is a meaningless number in my opinion.  A lot of those kids will never see the field on a Saturday.  I've never understood the purpose of bringing in more kids than you have the capability of coaching up really well. 163 kids isn't even close to manageable unless they take about 50 of them and hand them over to a couple of GA's and hope a couple of gems emerge.

IMO 81 is very meaningful. Yes, only 11 play at a time but your odds of developing high quality players in that 11 is twice that of the team with 40 in its incoming class. Granted, they're likely to have a higher attrition rate than the team with 40 but I think you're still likely to end up with a better 11 on each side of the ball than those that draw from a pool half that size.

If I'm a UWL fan, this is very good news. If I'm a UWL recruit and I didn't know I'd be in a pool of 81 other freshmen, well, either the field looks an awful long way away, or I'll be coming in with a new attitude. Could work both ways, but you're right — most of those kids will, for better or worse, never see the field.

Tuition dollars, baby. That's how college's stay afloat.

That's for sure Just Bill. A very noteworthy point. And, while such may not be the case at UWL, many schools have a recruitment quota despite the fact that you'll never find evidence of that in writing anywhere.
Also, all those tuition dollars from the 50 kids who will never see the field allow the University to provide bigger financial "packages" to next year's most highly desired recruits.
Another question that arises is how many of a class of 81 were really true recruits that UWL highly desired and pursued, as opposed to those who basically recruited themselves to LaCrosse due to it being close to home, affordable, a pleasing environment, or a combination thereof.

In response to large numbers of recruits -

Mount Union has had years where 100 freshmen showed up for football. Some years, total roster on day 1 of practice was 250. Of course, when they find out they have to bust their butts in practice, day 2 sees a drop in that number. As the days go on, a few, here and there, drop out. Those that were all league or all city or all anything find out they are number 5 on thr depth chart. They sometimes leave. Finally we're down to those that really want to play and buy into the team philosophy.
Also, Mount fields a junior varsity team. Gives all the new kids, and some of the old kids, a chance to play while learning the Raider system. Mount has, in some years, played a 10 game JV schedule. Lots of chances to show their skills. A few years back, an unknown freshman on the JV squad was moved up to the varsity. Nate Kmic holds all-division records for: touchdowns, points scored and total yards.
The large group has a greater probability of having a Nate Kmic than a small group. (Damn, how did I figure that out?)!
The Raiders also have 25 coaches and staff. That certainly helps.
So, a large number of recruits and a large roster, isn't of itself, a handicap. It seems to work for Mount Union. And most players get to play.
Best to all teams, whatever the size of your roster! ☠🏈
I'm old! I get mixed up and I forget things! Go Everybody! 🏈 ☠

Bad news for UWO already — prize recruit Pete MaCudden has a foot injury. Rode a cart at yesterday's WFCA all-star game.

Jake Kumerow is having a nice start to camp in Green Bay. Had an excellent day today and has consistently played well through OTA's.  Here's Jake answering a question or two after practice today:

Not football related but did you know that you now need Wal Mart's permission to purchase glue.  When I asked why I was told "because this is a college town."
Ah....ok, got it.   Getting permission was no problem.  All it took was asking a clerk.  But as I was leaving I wondered how they would know whether someone was going to huff it or not.  So how do they decide who to deny?  If they were really concerned it would seem to me the most effective way to deal with it would be to stop selling glue.  But that would cost moneys so that isn't going to happen.

Some people actually need glue for its intended purpose, so I hope they don't stop selling it.

What I'd like to see stop is the penalizing of the majority for the ignorance, laziness and lack of control of the minority.

Oshkosh gets five on the preseason All America team, including two first-teamers. By my count that's the most in D3 -- Brockport next with four. Guess I shouldn't give up on the Titans yet.

Whitewater has two, River Falls and Platteville with one apiece.

UWO gets two on Defense. I would have thought there'd be a mandatory 10-game waiting period for any player on a D that gave up a 35-10 3rd quarter lead.
Todarello made it as special teams but I imagine he'll be a big part of the O, along with the semi final invisible man Gerhartz, (only three carries vs Mt, 43 (td), 7 and 23 yards).

Just the stats

Interesting video from the Saints training camp about former Platteville player Dan Arnold, now playing tight end.

Heh...

With two O lineman on that list, Todarello and Gerhartz returning and good depth at RB, UWO looks to hit the ground running. Not nearly as deep at WR, however, and a new QB always comes with questions -- even if it's Duranso. He's gonna be really good, IMO. And they got three years left of him -- yikes.

It doesn't sound like Mentkowski caught on anywhere after Jags rookie camp... did he?

I think it's time for UWO to assume it's proper place in the WIAC pecking order- battling UWP and maybe UWL for second place.
