Redshirting on the definition you might be thinking of was voted out by D-III members about 15 years ago.

The new "unofficial" term is greyshirt.  Don't show up on the roster = Don't use a season of eligibility.  Don't practice with team, but can workout and get bigger, faster, stronger.

I knew about the redshirt being a D1 and D2 option only. Trying to get my head around this "greyshirt" concept. These kids are Freshman and have already made a decision that college will take at least 4 1/2 years to complete?  Is this an unofficial option offered by coaches?

I think the other guys gave a pretty good description of greyshirting in general.  And I agree that the 50% number they threw out there is probably pretty accurate.  I would just add that I think your description of an "unofficial option offered by coaches" is a good one.  There are exceptions, but the norm I am familiar with is that if a kid does not make the team, but shows promise and would have a chance to compete for a spot the next year by getting bigger, faster, and/or stronger, then the coach would communicate that to him (no promises of course) and tell him how to focus his workouts if he wants to give it another shot in a year. But the bottom line is it is completely up to the student. The only thing for sure is that he is not on the team in the current year and cannot participate in any team activities.

Another side benefit for the kid:  It's a lot easier to tell your friends that you are greyshirting than having to tell them you got cut.

From an article in a Green Bay paper on Jake Kumerow:
"Junior year and senior year we went undefeated," Kumerow said. "I had a great quarterback with me, We had a great coaching staff and we kicked some butt."

ahhh yes.

Bleedpurple would know but he's like a bank vault with insider scoop.

I can tell you I heard of a QB possible transfer. He played HS ball locally and had a great career and he was one the QB's on the IL Coaches All State team for the largest HS class. If it's true and he stays healthy, UWW should be well positioned going forward.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was pretty unhappy with the lack of energy from the young WRs during today's scout-team session.  A quote from that I thought some of you would find interesting:

"I think (DeAngelo) Yancey has really progressed, G-Mo (Geronimo Allison,) obviously 16 (Jake Kumerow.)  But everybody else was kind of piss poor."

And this from PackersNews.com

GREEN BAY - On Thursday, Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green was raving to local reporters about his former teammate, Jake Kumerow.

On Friday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was doing it, too.

Before anyone sets up a plaque in Canton for the Green Bay Packers free-agent receiver, it's important to note that the team has had five padded practices since training camp began and Kumerow has yet to play in a regular-season game during his three-plus years in the NFL.

Green might have told reporters that Kumerow is going to make the roster, but he still must prove himself over the next four weeks.

Still, there's no question the former UW-Whitewater player has leap-frogged some of the draft picks and gained the trust of Rodgers. He has been receiving snaps with the No. 1 offense this week and he's getting more and more playing time with Rodgers.

"I think Jake Kumerow's had a fantastic camp," Rodgers said. "I think you have to spotlight him. He's made a ton of plays. Did it all spring and summer and now he's getting reps with me and making a ton of plays.

Sure hope Kumerow makes it with the Packers. I remember that he was All-World with the Warhawks. We'll keep an eye open on his progress. If Aaron Rodgers likes you, that's a pretty good endorsement. I wish him the best! 🏈

MUC57,
It would be great if Jake could make the team! It is difficult to earn AR's trust.  That is a good sign. Hopefully, in 2018 the Kumerow legacy at UW-W will pick up where it left off!!

Wait a minute! I didn't say anything about hoping for a Kumerow legacy. One of those guys is enough for a long time. Of course, I'm just kidding. Or am I? Go Warhawks. Go Raiders! Here it comes, Go Everybody! ☠🏈

Sorry MUC57, you are going to have to put up with another one for a few more years. Offensively, the Warhawk plane has been in the shop for the last couple of years. This year, it's balls to the wall!  Go Hawks!

That's a sweet sound Bleed. I have to admit I've already made several long range scheduling adjustments to ensure my attendance.

Yesterday from Aaron Rodgers:

"I was telling Jake the other day, I watched a play that he was in on, he ran a certain route, he was open on the route," Rodgers said. "I wasn't the quarterback. We came back three practices later, same call, same coverage, same player -- him -- running the route, and he wasn't expecting the ball. I said, 'Hey, I watched that rep three days ago. I saw this play and I reminded myself at the time, if we had that opportunity again, where to go with the football.' I said, 'When you're out there, I'm coming your way.' I have confidence in him. He's in the right spot all the time, he makes contested catches, finishes the right way. He practices like a pro. It's a reminder to those other guys, this is what it looks like."

What is the basis for yall's optimism? Presuming Patterson is back, right? But Hudson is done. And Wilber has one left, but certainly seems that the QB position would, at the least, be open to challenge. I'm just not high on UWW's offense... unless rumored transfers turn out to be true.
