So not 100% football related, but it looks as if a possible addition of St. Thomas is no longer needed to bring the WIAC to 6 hockey teams. Just read an article on the Blugolds 2019-2020 schedule and it indicated Northland will be joining the WIAC in hockey this upcoming season.

Seven are needed for an automatic bid, though, so even at six the WIAC would be short.

Latest chatter is that UST football will go non-scholarship D1.

In other news.....  It's August!!!

I have no doubt my initial reaction to this is because my entire life has been D-III centric, but non-scholarship D1 just seems like a no man's land to me.

From a football perspective, yes. From an overall athletic perspective, I can see some advantages. First, you can remain D1 in other sports. You can probably skirt some Title IX inconveniences, too.

You won't crown a FCS champ from this pool but these teams play pretty decent football.

I'm sure the football is good. But I'm guessing the travel is ridiculous. Note to all Wisconsin and Illinois high school football players:  Don't do that to your parents!!

My guess is non-scholarship FCS is simply viewed as the easiest way to make the jump to D1. I don't see UST looking to stay there long term, if this is even the route they go. But it allows them the easiest pathway to bypass D2, and gives them some runway to get things in order in terms of  facilities, Title IX, coaching, etc. for when they make the final push to be full blown FCS scholarship. The major caveat being they'd be straight D1 (no FCS modifier) for Men's & Women's Basketball & Hockey.

If this actually panned out, it'd be a win for UST. There's a clear place for them in the D1 Hockey world with the WCHA. Likewise, it's a little beyond belief that MN and the Twin Cities have only a single D1 program for football and m/w basketball. They've got a niche they could fill there. It'd also be a tough blow to the walk-on program at the U of MN for football. And make recruiting a lot tougher for NDSU, UNI, SDSU, UND, USD, etc. Right now those schools have free reign in MN and much of Wisconsin when it comes to FCS football talent. If (still a big if at this point) UST made the jump, they are a closer option, in a sexier destination, for a lot of HS athletes that aren't being offered FBS scholarships. Right now, the rosters of the I-29 schools and UNI are filled with MN/WI talent.

No, I meant D1. I think that's a preferable path in their case to run D1 scholarship programs in other sports and not have to offer 85 football full rides. There is a loophole or two, but generally rules prevent mixing your athletic programs at D1 and D3 levels.

Years back, Dayton was Dlll in football but Dl in other sports. Finally the NCAA said no more.

Ok. I ask because when SNC considered doing just D1 for men's hockey a few years back (well, with one woman's sport), the report came back that schools such as Colorado College are grandfathered in for being D3 but offering scholarships at D1. SNC could, it said, offer D1 hockey but only as a non-scholarship sport - while keeping every thing else D3.

I thought perhaps that is what you were suggesting, as opposed to D1 for all. That's why I asked for the clarification. Thanks,

Actually I thought hockey was the loophole but I'm not clear on that. But as noted above, the Dayton rule generally prohibits such mixing. I think the problem there was that they'd recruit track guys on scholarship and then put them on the d3 football team.

D2 and D3 schools are allowed to place sports in D1 under certain circumstances. There's a limit of one men's sport and one women's sport (these can't be football or basketball), and they still have to follow the scholarship limits of their division unless they're grandfathered in. If your division doesn't offer a championship in a sport, you can have that sport in D1 regardless.

Under no circumstances is a D1 school allowed to place a sport in a lower division.

Anybody hear anything good/bad/otherwise about Trewyn? I see him listed behind three other guys at center on Tampa Bay's depth chart and while that's probably not where you want to be, I'm not sure if/how they update that thing. They play the Steelers tomorrow. Hope he gets a fair shake.

Can friggin August be over now please? How bout we just jump ahead a week and start camp? Lots of questions for the WIAC contenders... the most important of which will be answered with the first roll call next week. Some wacky rumors out there...

I think Nate is doing fine. As an undrafted DIII athlete, I'm sure he is sitting exactly where he expected to be at this point. We are just starting this race. If they are running the same schedule as GB, they've been in pads less than a week.

I have no idea how the other teams will be this year, but I believe UW-W will be better this year. We have some growing up to do on defense, but lots of athletes to do it. Offensively, the athletes we will have on this team are downright scary. We put up 41.6 points per game last year and I expect that number to go up.

D3football ranks the Warhawks No. 4 in the preseason poll behind MHB, Mt Union and St. Johns. Not much of a surprise when you balance their tradition and recruiting standards with the fact they have to replace a QB, Trewyn, Hasty and a gaggle of other Warhawk studs.

What surprises me is there are no other WIAC teams in the Top 25. La Crosse is 27th on the list and I'm on board with the Eagles being in the scrum as the 2nd best team in the WIAC... kind of. UWO is 34th. Titans stay healthy and I think they'll vault the Eagles. But these teams make a stronger second tier in the WIAC than they're getting credit for, IMO.
