Pointers kept that JCU game close last year before fading late. That's another team with a presumed QB battle going. Urmanski is a senior who got hurt last year, yielding the job to sophomore Herro, who impressed. I don't have a whole lot of intel on the Pointers but if they have a speedster at wideout, look for some rainbows at Goerke.

I have to imagine UWW will struggle in stopping Dubuque from putting up big points. Dubuque has had two season's of studying UWW's defensive playbook.

A beatdown wouldn't "prove" anything, but it sure would feel like karma came a calling.

Ps, I'm relatively certain playbooks are shared/transported w coaching changes frequently. I am nevertheless bothered by the chain of former UWW staff involved in this one.

I suppose we won't see the Hawk's roster until later in the week? They always seem to be the last D3 team to post theirs.

It's up now. Gave it a quick scan and here's a fun fact... Senior FB/TE Julio Perez is now listed at 280 lbs. Dude was a beast at 240. Please please please find ways to give him the ball.

You never know.  But for the most part, Julio will be busy road grading whoever is left standing after the O-line does it's work when we go to power. But I will say he is incredibly athletic for a guy his size.

Carthage has 8 starters back and a new head coach. I wouldn't expect much of a battle for a lower middle of the pack CCIW team.

Here is the summary I posted a while back:

Carthage:

Returning starter/2 deep player not listed on 2019 Roster:
Starters: None
Backups: DE Cashmen Beal (fr), DB Albert Rogalski (Jr)
Returning Starters: 8
Offense: 3 (14/22 from 2 Deep) 1 OL, QB, 1 WR
Defense: 5 (11/22 from 2 Deep) 2DL, 2LB, 1 DB
Key Losses: DB Amani Dennis, Connor Calvert, DL Cedric Fry, RB Lafayette McGary

Key returning starters: QB Billy Drury, DL Jacob Simar

Carthage returns 8 starters from their 2018 squad and will have to plug some big shoes on defense with the departures of Amani Dennis, Connor Calvert and Cedric Fry. On offense they need a running back and some skill players. It could be a long year in Kenosha.

Platteville finally released its roster today and for the first-time in a long time the majority of the players are from Wisconsin not Illinois. They seem to be young with only 13 Sr. And 72 Fr. and So.. Last years starting QB Schuetz is back but one of his go to receivers Johnson has graduated. Should be tough for Platteville to bounce back from last years  4 and 6 seaso.n

Your opinion/theories as to why this may be (last year and this year's expected tough year)? Is it just that occasional cyclic phase in various talent levels among recruits, or some financial/academic tendencies by the university admissions department, etc., etc.,- just mentioning these as potential topic categories.   Until last year, Platteville has had quite a successful run in recent years.  Just curious as to your thoughts.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic but when Platteville was nipping at WW and Oshkosh's  heels they had really good  QB play I didn't see that last year and they lose their best receiver to graduation. As far as the the roster make up I don't know why the Illinois numbers are down Platteville can offer reduced out of state tuition to Illinois and Iowa students under their Tri-State Initiative.  In many cases a Illinois student would pay less to come to Platteville than to school in Illinois. Anyways the time for wishing and hoping and predicting is over it's time for everything to be settled on the field. Go Pioneers

UWO takes from game.
Guy sitting next to me said this is the fewest amount of seniors they've had in the last 10 years. And it showed. When UWO had their best personal on the field on offense, I counted 6 freshman.
As far as the QB situation. Sophomore Makinen and freshman Kobe berghammer shared time in first half with Kobe outplaying him. Believe Kobe played all of second half. Exciting young player. Playmaker with arm and feet.
Not sure where Mitch Gerhartz was, but freshman Peter MacCudden played most of the game at RB. Could see flashes of his greatness he had in HS. But the guy who who really stood out was freshman WR Tony Steger. Guy was lightening quick. Caught a TD pass but got hurt second half. Fell down on a reverse. Noncontact injury. Knee. Didnt look good.
Now. As far as the game.
That was the worst display of special teams I have seen in a long time! Not exaggerating. TWO blocked FG attempts returned for TDs  by Carthage. Let me repeat that......TWO!!!! Not to mention a turnover by UWO on a punt return.
Offensive line was not good. Very young. 3 freshman on o-line I believe. Couldn't get any rythem in running game.
Despite the score, defense was very solid. As expected from Cerrone being a defensive guy.
I know it's the first game, but there's going to be some growing pains with this very young offense. Although it should be fun watching this freshman class grow the next 4 yrs.

Agree with your O line take. But I think there was no "split" of the QB position... Makinen got hurt, sat out the last series or two of the first half, tried/started the second half and was done, on ice and on crutches by the time UWO got the ball again. Hope he's OK

Yeah, I think UWO fans are in for a "watching freshmen grow" year after further review, at least compared to previous standards of UWO success. That happens.

Falcons up 31 zip with lots of time left in the first half. Can't tell whether we are that good or Minnesota Morris is that bad. It is more likely that Minnesota Morris is that bad.

'95 Blugold

Back from Blugold 35-3 victory over Loras. Commoner fans take on the Blugolds.

As expected the defense was the star of today's game. Had a pick 6 right before half and for the most part kept Loras in check. Only 3 points Loras came away with was a FG on a drive that started at the Eau Claire 8 yard line following an INT. Nice goal line stand. Surprised they actually kicked the FG as they were down to the 3.

Offense was lackluster and except for a handful of big running plays here and there were held in check for the most part. Have not looked at the box score, but expect it to show better numbers than how we looked. I know it's a new coach and system, so hopefully as the season goes we begin to gel and execute better.

Had some chances on down field pass  plays, but our QB over threw the receiver each time.

We seemed undersized compared to Loras in all areas. I'm afraid we are going to have a tough time when we are playing against better talented teams who we are undersized against.

I know we have been trending up, but I'm afraid we may take a step back this year. My initial game 1 overreaction is I have have a hard time finding another win on the schedule. Hopefully I get surprised.

@WW
Guessing you were at the game? But from what I saw, Makinen and Berghammer split series equally in first half with Berghammer probably playing better. I know Makinen tweaked his leg first half, but did play one more series before halftime. Came out after half warming up with other QBs. Dont think he had one series after half.
I think the guy you saw with ice on leg and in crutches was #17 WR Steger. Who got hurt first series of second half.
Either way, I think Berghammer will eventually take over the reins.
