Kumerow! UWW!!!!

Yes, I'm alive, busy, haven't been here in awhile, hi everybody!

Good to have you back.
We are out of town but were able to watch the Packers' game w some out of town WI fans- we had a blast.
The cool thing about the Kumerow TD was the number of replays- showing over and over what a great play he made catching and staying in bounds.

Amazing body control and effort. So often you'll see a receiver either unable to stay in bounds and step out immediately or give it a step or two and then go out. Great effort diving to the pylon and keeping BOTH hands on the ball!!

Way to go Jake!!

That was a great play!! I was cheering and my son was like "Why are you cheering for the Packers?!" ... "Because that WR is a D3 guy buddy!!" Son: "He was!?!?"

D3 trumps all for me when watching the NFL. Fun to see 'our guys' make plays on the biggest stage

Thoughts that ran through my mind as I looked at each WIAC team's schedule and results:

EAU CLAIRE: Set back Saturday after three straight reasonable to good performances. Titans got their revenge. Blugolds need to find some more offense. Their final four games include road games at Point and La Crosse, bracketed by home games against Platteville and Stout.  Hopefully they can find a win in the rest of their schedule. I would think they would be very happy finding two.

LA CROSSE Lewandowski getting on a roll but will be tested the next couple of weeks. Facing UW-0 (home) and UW-W (on road) next two weeks and because of loss to Platteville they need both to keep playoff hopes alive.  With season on the line, they have predictably moved away from balance and put their season on the shoulders of their talented but young QB. After the UW-0 and UW-W games, the Eagles host Eau Claire before finishing up their  WIAC slate at Stevens Point.

OSHKOSH They are sitting where they need to be right now at 3-0. The UW-O run game finally broke through against UW-EC. They are still struggling to find an efficient passing game. Their defense appears solid. Arguably their three biggest WIAC tests are yet to come (La Crosse away, Platteville away, UW-W home. The Titans host River Falls between the UW-P and UW-W games).  With loss to Salisbury and a limited number of Pool C spots, Titans can't count on a Pool C. Although it would be interesting if they end up with two losses and both losses are to #1 seeds.  It would be helpful for them if either LaCrosse or Platteville end up regionally ranked.

PLATTEVILLE Along with UW-W, probably the best WIAC Pool C if they don't win the conference. Their win over La Crosse looms large and sets them up well for the rest of the season. They are home against Oshkosh and Point. But first they have to get by Eau Claire who beat them by 24 points last season. The Pioneers have flipped the script. But are they improved enough to go from 4-6 to 9-1?  History suggests otherwise, but they've got a chance.

RIVER FALLS The Falcons have lost five straight, including three games they probably thought "very winnable" before the season. The offense had been struggling before a 49 point explosion Saturday against La Crosse. Unfortunately, they yielded 9 TD passes and 63 points.  With Whitewater, Stout, Oshkosh, and Platteville on tap, the Falcons may be staring at 1-9 and 0-7. Given they've kept their last four losses within a couple of touchdowns, maybe they pull out one of the last four. Hard to find where it will come from, though.

STEVENS POINT As is often the case, the Pointers are a puzzle.  After opening the season with a hard fought loss to John Carroll, they beat Wabash. Then after a puzzling 17 point loss to a Dakota State team that lost to Waldorf by 50 points, they beat River Falls and hung tough with Oshkosh. After getting shutout by Whitewater 38-0, they head into their final four games at 2-4. To finish they've got Eau Claire and La Crosse at home and travel to Stout and Platteville. They need three wins to get them to .500 overall and over .500 in the WIAC. It won't be easy.

STOUT After opening the season by pushing St. John's, the expectations rose for this team. Last year, the Blue Devils went 5-5, including a November win over Platteville. But Stout has fallen on challenging times after their promising opener. After getting a win against Cal Lutheran, they have lost their first three WIAC games. They have had a troubling habit of falling behind in WIAC games.  The Blue Devils fell behind Oshkosh 16-0 before scrambling back to tie the game in the fourth quarter, only to lose 26-23. Stout then fell behind La Crosse 27-0, never really getting back into that game.  Then Saturday, they fell behind Platteville 24-7 before making a game of it and losing 33-27.  Sitting at 1-5 and 0-3, Stout hosts Stevens Point and River Falls before traveling to Whitewater and Eau Claire.  Winning three out of four is a reasonable expectation as long as they keep focus after a disappointing start to the conference season.

WHITEWATER  While the margins haven't been always been huge, the Warhawks sit where they usually do at this point in the season, 6-0.   Whitewater knows how to win and has never been particularly concerned about style points.
If Oshkosh continues to win each week, the WIAC finale in Oshkosh on November 16th looms large. Importantly, overall, UW-W is healthy heading into the final four games. They are primed for a strong finish.

'95 Blugold

I'd be very happy with two more wins out of the Blugolds. Unfortunately, they are a one man show on offense as it's Austin Belot or bust. Except for the River Falls game, they have not been able to sustain any type of scoring drive and have had to rely way to much on the big play.

I think they are missing QB Malueg more than I ever thought they would by the way he started out the season as Johnson has given them absolutely nothing in the passing game. I don't know the extent of Malueg's injury, but hopefully it wasn't a season ender.

Defense is still the strength of the team despite the UW-O QB running wild on them this past week. If Malueg continues to progress I think we are probably a year or two away still from really turning the corner. Despite the coaching change, I don't think we've taken that much of a step back from what Larson built the past three years.

From the limited view of one game against UW-W, it appears to me that Beschomer is off to a good start. It appeared to me he has the Blugolds playing the game the right way. They played hard and fought to the final snap. I'm pretty optimistic the Blugolds will be moving to a mid-level WIAC team, which would definitely be a step up.

Can't find anything to disagree with re BP's analysis of RF chances.

In the For What It's Worth category, my friends on the sideline/chain gang tell me that UWL players and coaches win the FBomb/foul language trophy so far. Nobody else close, they say.

MESSAGE TO RECRUITS:  IN DOUBT? ENROLL AT STOUT. DON'T CARE? GO TO EAU CLAIRE. AT A LOSS? TRY LACROSSE. FEELIN' OUTTA JOINT? YOUR PLACE IS POINT. DON'T LIKE THE REST? DO WHAT'S BEST!

GOT BALLS? PLAY FOR THE FALLS!

Round 2 of make all D3 mascots fit the MIAC naming conventions, again focused on making UW-Platteville the Platties with Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb as the mascot:

I said this before and I'll say it again. If UWW went down this road it would be a PR nightmare. That's before we looked into mascots  :-X

So I'll pass on playing this game.

The second half of the Point game may have been the best UWW has looked all season....both sides of the ball. Defense played great all game while the offense found it's groove in the second half. 1st half was pretty bad, they seemed to force the passing game leading to 3 INTs.

To open up the second half they came out running, and they finally looked like the Whitewater of old. Getting 5-10 yards a pop between the tackles and Point had no answer. It was a thing of beauty, marching the length of the field for the TD. Great to see the Oline getting better as the season goes on, they're creating huge running holes. More of this please  ;D

Thanks to an intramural basketball team at Northern Colorado in the early 2000s that name and mascot has already been used.  Maybe Whitewater can just change the colors.
