Round 2 of make all D3 mascots fit the MIAC naming conventions, again focused on making UW-Platteville the Platties with Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb as the mascot:

hat tip a friend on a different football site

I said this before and I'll say it again. If UWW went down this road it would be a PR nightmare. That's before we looked into mascots  :-X

So I'll pass on playing this game.
Thanks to an intramural basketball team at Northern Colorado in the early 2000s that name and mascot has already been used.  Maybe Whitewater can just change the colors.

So wrong

OK, idiots, back to football.  ;)

Pretty compelling game this coming weekend. The 3-0 Titans traveling to La Crosse to face the Eagles and their red hot QB, Evan Lewandowski. Evan is the first QB in the history of NCAA football to throw 6 interceptions one week and 9 TD's two games later. OK, I made that up, but it is pretty crazy. Lewandowski has thrown for 951 yards and 13 touchdowns over the past TWO games.

Both teams are fighting for their playoff lives. Any thoughts on who will win this? I'm picking the Titans. Cerroni loves to confuse young QB's through shifting personnel and adding a third safety to the mix. I also think the match up is better for UW-0 than UW-L. I don't believe UW-L is strong enough along the line of scrimmage to take advantage of the Titans' youth.  I think turnovers will be the difference and UW-0 will have just enough offense to win.

I read an article this morning on ESPN.Com. The article was basically a series of quotes from Aaron Rodgers' teammates about what it is like to play with him (in light of his perfect passer rating last Sunday). One of the guys they interviewed was Jake Kumerow:

The former Division III star at Wisconsin-Whitewater caught two passes for 54 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown on

Sunday against the Raiders. He's in his second season with the Packers but barely played last year.

"When we're out there playing, I don't even realize how many touchdowns he threw or how many yards he's throwing for. I had no idea until we got back in the locker room.

"In college, we had some good games. My quarterback, Matt Behrendt, threw for six touchdowns in the first half and I had three of them, and then we both got taken out so we didn't get to finish the game. So we were on a roll to start that one. Other than that, [no]. And that's a little bit different playing where we were at. It was against [Wisconsin-] Stout. Are they a blue team? Yeah, [it was against] Stout."

Cool shout-out to Matt Behrendt!

Soo what you are saying is that Behrendt was dealing out his Warhawk City Lightning to his Button Men that day!?!

I don't think UWL has a playoff life to fight for. I also don't trust a team that gave up 49 to UWRF but if UWRF coaches, like the UWW staff, monitor this board for game advice, it's clear they listen to me regarding Herink targets, as the big guy poses huge matchup problems and came up with 17 catches Saturday. So perhaps the Falcons had an unfair advantage that the Titans will not since I offer them no advice, other than give the ball to MacCudden, which should be enough to dispatch LaCrosse. UWO by 14.

My second favorite WIAC team allegiance switched from UWO to UWL a couple years ago. I'll go w UWL. I'm only an ill informed fan, so I'll go with the favorite uniform rationale- I don't like either team's uniforms but I like UWO's even less.

Challenge for you research gurus.  When is the last time in an NCAA game that the QB of one team had 9 or more TD's and a receiver from the opposing team had 17 or more receptions?  That's just crazy!

My second favorite WIAC team allegiance switched about 8 years ago from whoever is playing Stevens Point to whoever is playing Oshkosh.

You don't need to be a research guru to know it was last Saturday. Just look at the box score on D3football.com.

UWO outlook for Saturday
I dont pretend to talk about a team I know nothing about. Being that said. I know nothing about UWL. Dont know how to take that score last week. Do both teams have juggernaut offenses? Did both teams play with 9 on defense? All I know is that UWL's QB The Big Lebowski put up some crazy stats. I guess we'll know what's real when he faces UWO's very sound, confusing defense. Saw 2 safety blitzes to the qb's blind side last week. One leading to a sack. The other leading to a grounding call. I know Cerroni's gameplan every week is to rotate as many people in and out on defense as he can. Not just series wise, but like every 3 plays. But it was not more evident than last week. The only 2 people that didnt rotate in and out were the 2 safeties. Even the sound and solid MLB Logan Heise played probably 75% of snaps. Dont think the rotations were because of personal the offense was coming out with. I think it was more to give the offense a different look in player #'s every time.  UWO runs more of a match up zone anyway. So the # of DL, LB and CB's dont really matter. I'm willing to bet there were 20 different people playing defense last week. Keep'em fresh. Keep'em confused. Its working.
I guess the same could go for UWO's offense. The one thing I've noticed as the season goes on, is that the scheme is slowly changing by UWO's OC Luke Venne. For the longest time UWO was a ground and pound offense and play bend but dont break defense. It's a little more aggressive on defense. And to give the PERCEPTION of an aggressive offense. 3 sometimes 4 wide at WR. I think that's happening for various reasons. #1. Spread the defense out so there's not so many people in the box for this average (but getting better) o-line. From what I see, looks like blocking calls aren't going as planned. Too often I see an o-lineman blocking nobody. Center and RT are freshman. #2. I think Mitch Gerhartz and Peter Mac need people out in space to be successful. More of a zone blocking attack instead of the pulling guard smash mouth we're use to seeing from this offense. Speaking of Gerhartz. Not sure what's up with him. Has only played 1 game this season. Doesn't dress. Dont see him on the sideline. Dont think he's hurt. But they need him. This senior is a better in between the tackles runner option than MacCudden. You can see the glimpses of the talent Peter has at times. But he needs space. They are also getting small, but lightning quick WR #25 Chris Hess involved in the backfield when they spread the offense out. Fun to watch him work. And most importantly #3. Utilize Berghammer's talents as a runner. Most of those 100+ yards didnt come from him scrambling out of the pocket. They were called runs for him. 4 WR wide. One goes in motion. One of the MLB rotates to side of motion. Kobe runs up the middle. Broke a couple 25+ I believe. Very talented runner. And as of right now the only pattern he can consistantly hit are the quick slants. And maybe a few in routes.  UWEC adjusted at halftime and played tighter on WRs. It worked. Kobe came close to throwing 2 INT's on those slants. UWO adjusted and called a few fly patterns. 2 of which were open and should have been 30+ TD passes. Just a click off on his touch. Overthrew by yard or two. Kids got the arm. Just needs that touch down field.
So that being said. Not knowing anything about UWL. I'll take UWO by 7.  25-18. With the winner cracking Top 25.
As a WIAC backer, I wish 2 or 3 of these teams would get an invite to the playoffs. I know it won't happen because there's too many conferences in this division. But how great would it be to watch 3 league teams attempt to make a run? There's no doubt a few of these teams are better than some of these eventual conference champs getting in. Maybe even some of them in the Top 25 right now.
Keep winning Salisbury Steak!!! Need an undefeated season out of you to boost UWO's resume. Because there's no doubt a  UWO  let down in conference is inevitable. 2 or 3 losses I've learned makes it difficult to get in. Would like to see this talented freshmen class get some early playoff experience.
Oh and by the way. Congratulations to coach Pat Cerroni on winning his 100th game last week. Been fun watching him turn around this bottom feeder of a university into a competitive team  in just 12 1/2 short years.
