I'm hearing Mike Schmidt is gone from La Crosse. Going to D-II Northern State. He definitely pumped some juice into his alma mater but left before finishing the job. Anyone from up that way know why that move and why now?

Wow, leaving his alma mater for some ho-hum directional DII I had to look up to see where it is makes one wonder what happen with his relationship with UWL? Hope he enjoys recruiting South Dakota.

I would wager a guess that several good football players from the Coulee region will be playing ball at Northern State next season. Many of the Minnesota schools in that same conference have found the shopping for players in Wisconsin to their liking. With no D-2 competition in state a high number of next level talent leaves Wisconsin. I think Schmidt will probably do just fine in that category.

Agreed, he knows Wisconsin HS football and the recruiting landscape. SD doesn't have a ton of talent (especially local to Northern St), and the MN D2 schools & FCS I-29 schools have long made Wisc. a point of emphasis.

The reason the MN D2 schools (particularly eastern MNs, such as Duluth, WSU, Mankato) do well in Wisconsin is geography. Mom and Dad can still see those games. Northern State won't have that advantage.

Kind of an odd move. I get a young guy trying to build his resume, but elevating Northern State out of the pool of mediocrity in which it has always floated seems a tall task.

During the post game press conference yesterday, Warhawk safety and captain Nate Tranel gave a glimpse into the Hawks' mindset heading into this week:

"I don't think it will ever erase the feeling we had last year," Tranel said. "It's always in the back of our mind all right, well, now we have another game. Yes, right now we're going to celebrate and enjoy the night together. This is a huge accomplishment for us, but we're never going to forget about that feeling from last year. We lost in the fourth round last year and we're going into the fourth round this year. ...

"It's nice that we got this win, but we can't forget about (the loss) because that's what drives us every day."

I was really impressed with Nate's comments, he sure exudes captain/leadership.

I was also interested to hear Coach Bullis' comments regarding the lesson learned from UMHB last year.  UWW sure took the lesson to heart.

Forgot Winona St. I grew up there ans could see Wisconsin from my front yard.

Good to be back and so happy to see that all the usual suspects are still hanging around.  Been so long that I couldn't remember my password, (no surprise these days,) and my email associated with account is history so Pat had to, "assign," me a new password.   ;D   Hell of a game yesterday. The difference  between times of possession was ridiculous!  We almost made the trip with #33 but as some of you may know, he had a bit of an issue at work.......... :'( :'(

I see where our season parking passes will carry over into the play-offs.  Anyone know of someone that has a parking pass and won't be using it on Saturday?  Would like to get #33's car in the Perk as well and would be happy to pay for it.  PM me, please.  Would appreciate any leads.

Good to see footballfan and 413 linked together again on this board like the good old days!!

They had only 2 WI kids on last years roster. Probably contributed to their 5-6 record.

Agree it's a little odd, but read the AD's bio and see they're making a big push. New facilities including indoor practice facility.

Recently hired Saul Phillips, long time DI basketball coach (at NDSU and Ohio U.) and former player for Bo Ryan at Platteville.

A new era!

Aberdeen ... tough place to recruit to in general. And it Mankato just escalated the NSIC arms race.

Well, what a game to come this weekend.  I can't wait.  The ancient enemy.  The old foe.

Your victory over UHMD was like two heavy weights standing two-to-two and one smashing the other.  This week is the heavyweight smasher vs the dancer.  The big questions will be can the Whitewater defense slowdown AirJohnnie?  And can the Johnnie defense take a four quarter beating and keep getting the offense the ball?

Massey makes UWW to be a four point favourite, 34-30.  I don't reckon it will be that close if the score is that high.  If it's less than 25 for both teams then I favour UWW, but if the Jays get more than that and if Erdmann continues his post-season form and passes for 400+ at least 4 TD's then I'm going with the Jays.  Wheaton was a hard contest, though, so our boys will be pretty bruised up.  I hope they recover well.

This game is for much more than a battle of old foes smasher v dancer, it's for the very existence of the sport as we know it. Should St. John's be allowed to advance along with NCC, young fans everywhere will develop a dangerous, misguided understanding of football. They'd likely see two QB's slinging the ball around for another 1,000 yard 7 on 7 game. Next thing you know helmets and shoulder pads will be replaced by floral decorated belt flags and pretty bandanas.
UWW must do it's part to preserve football as it was intended to be played.

Any speculation (and/or do any of you have some inside inclination :)) as to who may succeed Schmidt at UW-Lacrosse?  Will they promote from the current staff or go outside?

Also, I understand some of the opinion as to why he would want to move on, especially to DII Northern State?  However, I also understand, as he said, that it was an opportunity he believed he could not pass up.  On the other hand, at least he won't ever have experienced the feelings and memory that come with being fired by one's alma mater.  I've always believed that while it is a great lifetime opportunity and experience for a coach to be hired by their alma mater, but also can imagine the disappointment and, in some cases, the emotional "scar" that can leave on a person for the rest of their lives.  Yet, we all know that is just part of the profession and the chance that any coach takes in those types of situations.  Anyway, I wish him and his family all the best and also wish UW-L all the best in securing their next head coach for a storied and good program.

He was in no danger of being fired. He was very well liked.

By state law, they'll have to post the job for 6 weeks or something like that, so it'll be a while before we know the next guy. I'm sure the AD will make a statement that a "national search" will soon be underway for the next head coach, and I believe that to be true. LaCrosse is a good gig. Nice facilities, gorgeous campus, resources, and enrollment growing so fast they can't house 'em all. Last year, they had 80 freshmen report to camp, and I believe a similar number this year.

There's a guy I'd bet a quarter on right now, but I'm not gonna start that yack until I know for sure he's a candidate.
