The quarterback dropback punt thing? I feel like I've seen it a lot in D-III in the past five years or so, but my colleagues out East tell me it was not as prevalent out there.

Yes, exactly.  What could we do?  Down and distance barely mattered.  Rutter was picking us apart seemingly at will.

The discussion on the Final Top 25 has lots of interesting opinions. I don't have a strong feeling for UWW's final ranking as I see good arguments for #2 to #5.
If you looked at the Stagg Bowl performance alone, #5 (or #25) makes a whole lot of sense. But the final ranking isn't based on one game, and the UMHB and SJU games are feathers in the UWW cap.

I think the complicator for evaluating UWW is coming to a mental image of what team you're ranking. The Pound the Rock mantra was used quite a bit by broadcasters,  Coach Thorne and even Coach Bullis. Yet, was that really UWW?

Sometimes referred to as quick kick.
St Thomas used it extensively in the 2015 Stagg Bowl year with John Gould, who I believe was a punter in high school, and it's been used since then. Prior years, the QBs had a few punts each year but it was never as common. No idea what other teams used it prior to some I've seen in recent years in the MIAC.

I think of quick kicks as ones on third down.

I'm going to need you to let Dave Lee know he's got that one wrong.

I've not seen it on 3rd down. Punting on 4th down is cowardly enough.

LINFIELD used the quick kick often under Ad Rutschman. Yes, 3rd down.
And, yes, it was NAIA 40 years ago.

Those Rutter punts! How was he able to get away with that?

They were successful on a 4th and 12 so regardless of the down/yardage when Rutter lines up behind center you had to respect the fact that they might do anything and above all stop them from getting a first down.  It's your only option.  We messed one of them up the others we just didn't penetrate their front well enough.  I wouldn't necessarily call it genius but it was damn effective in taking any chance of a punt return away from us.  They are very well coached.

Nah, they just stole it from Bethel/Roste in last years playoff game where we used it to great effect.

And Bethel stole it from St Thomas who has used it for quite a while, generally very successfully (please ignore last year's game at Bethel where Kilgore blocked it and I think it was returned for 6).

This makes me curious where it originated in the D3 ranks. Have teams been doing this for a while outside of UST?

UST created it. Bethel Perfected it.  ;) NCC may have just popularized it  ???

Perfected, eh?

Quote4th and 8 at UST38   Jaran Roste punt loss of 6 yards to the UST44 (blocked by Jake LeVahn).

Wow! Congrats on the Jim Rice reference and knowing that!  That's impressive!  Not too often is there a WIAC reference that I have to look up! Link Walker is as far back as my memory goes. +k

Platteville's  Dan Arnold had 4 catches for 76 yards and a TD for the Arizona Cardinals in a loss to the Rams yesterday.  Along with Jake Kumerow for the Packers it good to see the players you saw in person at Pioneer and Warhawk stadiums have success at the next level.

emma17

Outstanding game for Arnold, happy for him.
I do love watching Kumerow play as he is all out.
Rodgers threw a couple bombs his way at the end of the game yesterday, looked like both were slightly under thrown- Kumerow must have the deceptive speed.

Unfortunately for Arnold his season is over I hope Kumerow has 3 more games.

He'd have been the Cobbers leading receiver on the season with those single game numbers  8-)
