Maybe a WIAC fall sports update coming next week?

Given the Big 10 is expected to announce tonight a conference only schedule for their Fall Sports, I'd expect something similar. Hopefully it isn't a full out cancel yet.

Even as an optimistic person, I can't say I'm extremely optimistic we will have a season this year. Praying I'm wrong!

Agreed bleed, I think the next college football game played is going to be a long time from now. Hope we will have something in the fall of '21.

If that's coming from bleed, I guess I just got less optimistic. Thought a conference schedule could be doable, a late September start, with no overnights. Jeez, this sucks

To be clear my less than optimistic post is not based on sourcing (hopefully, that makes you feel a bit better). It's just based on what I am seeing. Masks are required inside all buildings on UW campuses this fall. While football is played outside, I feel like the powers that be (conference affiliated administrations) will look at all the contact in football, elaborate locker room safety strategies needed, and their distaste for controversy/criticism and take the "safe" route. Sitting from their rather lofty perches, I believe they will consider it safer (some would say for them, although they will say it is for the athletes) to cancel the season.  Again, I am praying for courage and for an ability for them to see the hidden costs of cancelling a season and the very real impact that decision will have on the lives of the student-athletes.  I believe there are creative solutions to do this "relatively" safely. The question is whether the administrators will have the courage and the belief in the AD's and the coaches to manage the situation safely. Especially when they know that if things go wrong, the questions will go straight to the top.

Good points, bleed. WIAC is in a unique situation, with all its members under the same government, and none in a major urban environment. They could pull it off, because there's collective unity and similarity at its core. The challenge, however, is that the WIAC schools need sports way less than some of the private D3s. Maybe 5% of Whitewater student body are student athletes. Ripon maybe 40%, up to half? I'd expect Ripon to go to far greater lengths to make sports happen. For better or worse, WIAC is far more likely to capitulate. Not that the others wouldn't be far behind...

Yeah, the smart play for the WIAC would be to cancel all fall sports and probably a good PR move too. I'm sure there will be some push back, from concerned athletes, parents and maybe even coaches, if they do decide to play.

If they don't play, my biggest concern (coming from my selfish football side of me) would be: what will become of all the seniors...especially the key players? Obviously they will retain a year of eligibility, but some may choose just to graduate and move on with their lives and begin their career. A part of me will be crushed if some key players never step foot onto the field for their senior year, but choose to graduate rather than sticking around till next fall. Like i said, that's just my meatball selfish fan POV.  :P

bp, ww, 02 W:

I know what you guys mean. I, too, f
want to see the season happen, from my selfish standpoint and for the sake of the players, espcially the seniors as you mentioned ( and, of course, for the sake of those colleges that meed it to happen.) Currently, at least for ours (MIAA), that is the plan. I am not going to make any predictions as I think that would be foolish since, obviously, no one knows what is going to happen nor can control the circumstances for steering the outcome to what we desire (or even think should happen.) However, despit my optimism and hope (no pun intended), I continue to have this uncomfortable "gut feeling" that we (college football-at least at our D3 level) will get past the first month of the season (the first game or maybe the second) and then the season will come to a screeching halt- have to be shut down. That is my fear, although I hope I am wrong, with keeping and placing the safety of everyone involved as the top priority, of course in any scenario that ends up happening.

I'll hate to see it cancelled too but I believe it will be.  I live for WARHAWKS football and they pay me to come.   But I just don't see anyway they can keep the athletes safe and there isn't enough money involved at the DIII level to force the issue.  It's a bad break for seniors but there are worse things.  You know...like death.

I see Platteville's September 3rd game against East Texas Babtist is no longer on their schedule. Don't know if Platteville cancelled or ETB cancelled.

Salisbury at Oshkosh (9/12), Mayville St at UWSP (9/19) also cancelled

Huntingdon's rearranged USA South schedule has us playing LaGrange on 9/19 so I assume UW-Oshkosh @ Huntingdon is off.

WW

Midwest Conference has cancelled all non-conference games. That takes St. Norbert off the Stout schedule, don't think there are others... but in any case, the decision to eliminate N-C games from the WIAC schedule (at minimum) is starting to get made for them.

General Blugold scoreboard I just looked at has all women's volleyball and soccer games listed as cancelled.  Hopefully its not the whole story, but at this point I would not be surprised if this will be the end result of Fall sports this season in the WIAC.

Of note, they are non conference events, so hopefully conference only schedule for all sports.

jamtod

MIAC is cancelling non-conference matchups, so St Thomas vs UW-Eau Claire is gone.
