MIAC is cancelling non-conference matchups, so St Thomas vs UW-Eau Claire is gone.

Blugolds go out on top in that series. Though it was pretty one sided for the most part their were some good games in there.

There is no way to have "safe" or even "relatively safe" football. I see the WIAC cancelling the schedule for this fall. And it makes sense to me. Wear a mask!

GOT BALLS? PLAY FOR THE FALLS!

Very "heady" discussion over the course of the last few pages by several very intelligent, passionate, experienced, and hopeful but realistic posters/fans. When I think of football in particular, I think of a sport in which just about all 22 men on the field have someone in their face/are in someone's face, on just about every play of the game. This presents a very "ripe" transmittal environment for the highly contagious COVID-19 virus. I wonder how, in good conscience, this situation can be encouraged by playing the games and thus presenting the virus with what seems a prime opportunity to infect more victims. I wish to hell such was not the case, but as much as I would like to see unbridled competition, I just can't see it being able to be done safely. The ugly term "risk factor" certainly rears it's head. Is the players being able to play, and us fans being able to watch watch worth the risk?
A question that does nothing but suck the big one to the max!

Part of the recent discussion also dealt with seniors missing their final season and the resulting suffocating disappointment. Perhaps last years seniors who had their winter seasons cut short or their spring seasons canceled entirely could provide advice on that subject.

And, while there has been much speculation about what the WIAC, CCIW, MIAC, and any other conference may do, might not the mighty NCAA just step in and drop the hammer on everyone thus taking the question out of the hands of the individual conferences.

I see Jeff Jagodzinski is back where he started on the UWW staff. He's had quite a career, with stints as the head coach at Boston College, where he led a top 10 team, to the NFL as OC of the Packers, to the XFL as an OC, and now back to the Perk, where he played and started his coaching career as RB coach in 1985. This will be his 19th different coaching job, according to Wiki. Dude must keep a suitcase packed...

Stevens Point football teams will need to make alternate plans this year as Common Council votes to have no games at Goerke Field this year. The three teams even offered to have no fans.

Unique situation there at Point. Their home stadium is owned by the city, not the school. They have a couple full-size fields on university property right behind the field house where they practice. They could mark them any way they want, and I'd assume goal posts would be regulation. Not sure why those couldn't be game sites if there won't be fans in attendance.

To answer your question, answer this one instead:  Under what circumstances is playing worth the inherent risk?  Not regarding COVID specifically but in general.  Refer back to your own experience on the risks you've been willing to accept when allowing others to play sport.  Consider things like physical trauma, concussion, even viral infection (say herpes which is incurable and rampant in wrestling).  After making that clear-headed assessment, then turn your gaze on COVID with an equally clear-headed assessment and judge whether the risk of COVID is equal to, lesser than or greater than the risks we already allow (nay, encourage) people to take.

That will give you an answer.

Oz,

Perhaps I wasn't explicit enough in that ever since the discussion on playing amid the Coronavirus began I've never considered it to be worth the risk no matter the level of enjoyment we fans might have to forgo. I've been saying for some time that I don't see how games can take place without a pretty high number of infections occurring. I wasn't asking the question for my own consideration, but for those who believe there is some "safe" method that can be implemented to allow football to be played with minimal risk.
As far as risks like physical trauma, concussions, etc., which have always been part of the game of football, I think it's a personal (family if a younger kid) decision to which the legal principle of Assumption of a Known Risk seems applicable.
Sorry if you were confused.

No confusion, AndOne.  My response was also rhetorical.

Speaking strictly for myself it could have been the Black Plague I was dumb enough not to care.  Thank god I grew up.  I just don't see any way you can say it's safe regardless of what safety measures you put in place.  That's just too many people in too close of contact and walking about campus/classes with thousands of others.  I just don't think it's going to work until we get an effective vaccine.

I agree. Until we have an effective vaccine which experts indicated will not be around until late November or early December, having any sports without the necessary resources to place players into a "bubble" can't happen. Furthermore, since most teams/conferences don't have the same financial budget to do that, I think DIII needs to be unified and postpone until the Spring and have limited contact practices and field time to prevent strain on Athletic Department and limit the season to conference play (8 games) and one additional bowl game.

FWIW

The North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), which includes Wittenberg, Wabash et al, has suspended all athletics until the end of this calendar year. They join several other conferences that have also canceled.
