As would St. John's. He probably meant "beat" a worthwhile team.

All the other teams (not RF) playing push overs in the first week does nothing to get them ready for the WIAC season.  Only WW can claim to have played a worth while team and most people on this site think SN is over rated year in and year out.

I wrote that LAX, EC, and Point played good teams.  Also, that WW kind of played a good team, if you count SN as that.

While it remains true the WIAC is D3's toughest conference top to bottom, the conference's  days of fielding an annual contender for the national title are probably over.  Small rosters of 100 (or fewer) players is one telling factor. But the big one is the migration of Wisconsin players to scholarships programs, especially to neighboring Minnesota and the NSIC, where virtually every school has pumped much more money into their programs in recent years.  My survey of Winona State's roster revealed 48 Wisconsin names, while UMD listed 37.  Another 20 to 30 could be found among far-flung outposts at Bemidji, Moorhead, Crookston, Concordia, and Southwest. (Numbers at St. Cloud and Mankato are equivalent to what they were in the recent past.)  Ten years ago, it would be safe to say a third to one half of the 100 or so of the current  NSIC Wisconsinites would have stayed home.  But not today.  The reason for our lack of success in recent playoffs is self-evident. (Kestrel's first law of unintended consequences took root in the "Border Battles", where  the eyes of Minnesota coaches were opened to all that unscholarhipped talent (which was beating their butts) east of the border).

In an unrelated discovery, Winona State no longer plays at Maxwell Field.  Instead it plays on Maxwell Field at Midwest Wireless Stadium.  The telecommunications company apparently forked over $350,000 for naming rights in support of WSU football.

In my next essay (Kestrel's second law of unintended consequences) I will reveal why grey-shirting will lead to the end of parity within the WIAC.  In the near term, however, I will be concentrating on my next April Fool's Day hoax.

Congrats to WARHAWKS Justin Jacobs and Robb Widuch, week one's WIAC Players of the Week.

Jacobs garnered the offensive POW with a 12/18, 295 yds and four touchdown performance.  While Widuch took home defensive honors with  7 solo and 3 assisted tackles, two of which resulted in quarterback sacks.

Back in 1999, Pepsi signed a 10 year contract for roughly $2,000,000 with Winona State. The money goes to the athletic program and the first installment paid for the field turf. The ultimate goal: A sports dome.

Krestel,

After playing in both the WIAC and the NSIC, I can say that your theory isn't true.  There were as many players coming out of WI on both Winona and UMD's team years ago.  Those two schools have always recuited very well in WI, along with UND and NDSU.  Other NSIC schools do not recruit WI that well at all, if the WIAC were to play the NSIC this year they would still win all but probably two games.

Concordia St. Paul, which is only and hour and a half from WI, has only seven players from WI on there team.  Teams like Northern State have none, the norm in the NSIC has become to recruit juco's or way out of state.  Lots of players from CA, FL, and southern states are coming to the NSIC.  Most of these players are overhyped and thats why the WIAC would still beat up on the NSIC.  If the WIAC were to decide to go D2, they would be competing with the NCC not the NSIC.

I'm feeling a tad ambivalent and have decided to change my pick in the LaCrosse/Howard Payne game to LaCrosse.

Also I just want to extend my congratulations to Stoutguy for being the first WIAC poster to have a post deleted by the moderator in our new digs.   Nice work, Stoutguy, you are the man. 8)  ;D

I can only wonder what I missed.  ;)

Pat Coleman

Yes, that's my understanding, should be on shortly after 9 CT tomorrow.

For those who missed it, the post's words were just fine, it was the 40-50 blank lines in between each sentence that were problematic. :)
