Uh huh ... so when St. Cloud State refuses to play this hypothetical Gagliardi-coached WIAC school, then what? Remember, not too many D-III schools are willing to strap it up and play a WIAC school, so you're left searching.

Or maybe playing just nine games, like UW-Lax in recent years. How about 395-143-10?

Pat, my point is that if John were coaching a WIAC school he'd take on a D-II opponent and whoop 'em, just like he did to St. Cloud State.

If we'd have played St. Cloud the last few years instead of Eau Claire that's 2 more wins right there.   ;)

You didn't beat Concordia last year!  I'm not only a cobber fan but I'm a season ticket holder to U North Dakota football.  The St. Cloud State football program has taken itself to being a top competitor in DII.  Now DII is watering itself down. Yes, I believe that St. John's would compete with many teams at that level, but by NO means would they be that dominate.  I haven't looked up any stats or past seasons but  I'm willing to bet many of those wins are before the latest coaching regime and the rebirth of the Huskie program.

Now basketball on the other........there is much less of a difference in DII and DIII but not in football.

As is my point -- just not at the same rate that he whooped Macalester!

And fins, hello, reality check. First of all, it's called a conference, not a division. You and the WIAC are in the same division, it's called Division III. Second of all, you can't say that the cupcakes of the WIAC are not miles better than Macalester. Put your Johnnie red glasses (not Johnnie Red glasses, that's a different thing!) away and try a smidge of objectivity.
Pat, hello.
Gee thanks for the division/conference lecture. I hope my final grade doesn't suffer for my careless slip.::)
I'd agree that the WIAC cupcakes are better than Macalaster and maybe always were. So SJU wins those games 56-6 instead of 72-0? Still a win against a cupcake.
I'll agree to increase my objectivity in direct proportion to your decrease in cynicism. :D

SJU09

Just for giggles I went back and compared how SJU (John)
has done against the WIAC since 1990.  Their(his) record is 11wins & 5 losses  for a 68.75% winning %.  (5 & 2 in the playoffs and 6 & 3 in the regular season.)

Wis Superior 1-0 regular season game
Wis Lacrosse 2-1 all playoff games
Wis Whitewater 1-0 regular season game
Wis Steven's Point 2-0 both playoff games
Wis Stout 1-0 playoff game
Wis Eau Claire 4-4 7 regular season and one playoff

Mr.Shoes

Consider this what-if:

John coaches in the WIAC. He finds a way to win consistently, if not at the same rate as he has in the MIAC. Other schools get frustrated with said domination and certain programs falter. Suddenly, the GREATEST CONFERENCE IN THE WORLD!!!! starts to look a bit like the current MIAC. While this is going on in Wisconsin, the MIAC has no single dominant team and year-in and year-out, everyone feels as though they have a chance to win. More schools build good programs, fewer schools let theirs slide, and suddenly, the MIAC looks like the current WIAC. Hmmmm.

While that's a little far-fetched, it's not too crazy to think that one VERY good coach can have an effect on other teams beyond one win or loss a season. Those consistent wins counting for the hypothetical WIAC John also have to be chalked up as losses against hypothetical competition. You can't assume that the relative strength of every other team would go unchanged.
Nice day, huh?

ritz72,
A player, the leading rusher in the country, is honored as one of the top ten football players in Division-3 football, and you have the nerve to diss him?  Wow!

NOt a diss, just an outside opinion on the fact he is a phy. ed. major....

I can believe he is a stud on the field, but give him a bowling ball, and he is unstoppable!!

Let me repeat myself in many of my posts.....

Ritz72,

Come back on the board and tell us how that Phy Ed, General Studies nominee for the Gagliardi Trophy does on Saturday.  Taking a rip at Beaver is a little bit below the belt, but then I expect that from someone like you. The kid is what a D3 athlete should be.  Check out the story on
http://www.warhawkfootball.com and then get your ass up out of the gutter!

You have no F**^* clue who I am...... so get off your high an mighty horse and relax!!!!

Sorry, if in my day, I was only an All-American, Academic All-American, Stamm Finalist.  Maybe playing O-line didn't get me in line for the Gagliardi....

Beaver is a nice player.....take a few relaxation pills and relax....I am just poking fun at generalities, not in "Mr. Academic 2nd Team All-Region!!!"

and I will get back to you on Saturday!!!

Remember...it's all in fun!!!

Laces -
True, the current SJU program wouldn't dominate D2, but don't you think it's distinctly possible that giving scholarships and looser admission standards, a great coach Like Gagliardi would dominate?

My point is, when it gets personal, it's not so much fun anymore.  It actually show a lack of class!  I don't remember one posting on here recently by a WIAC poster that named or had a personal attack on a SJU player.  If I am wrong, then I am sure someone will correct me and I will also tell the WIAC poster that personal attacks are wrong.   And don't know the answer to this but I will just throw the question out there.  How many players on the SJU team are Phys. Ed. majors from your School of Education?  It is a pretty common major for football players with aspirations to coach?  Your comments don't reflect well on your own team.  Let us know when you want to go back to the FUN part!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Footballfan413,

No Phy Ed majors at SJU.  The slack major at SJU is business management, and there is lots of them.

Thanks for the info DuffMan,  Always a risks when you ask a question that you don't know the answer to, lol!  First thing they tell you in law school!! :)  Not really inferring that it is a slack major, just pointing out that it is the most common road to coaching for anyone.

footballfan413

DuffMan,
I also like your comment about how your legendary coach would do in a system where he would have scholarships and looser admission standards to work with.  Hell, that is a scary thought given his success at D-3!!!

beancounter

Duffman....does SJU have a major in "parks and recreation management"??    ;D  ;D

(one of my favorite d1 slack majors, generally confined to the SEC....)

kubiack78
