DuffMan,
I also like your comment about how your legendary coach would do in a system where he would have scholarships and looser admission standards to work with.  Hell, that is a scary thought given his success at D-3!!!

I know I'm not Duffman, but this is something I've thought about and that my friends and I have discussed.

I don't think he would have been as successful at a higher level. His "winning with NOs" philosophy (no tackling in practice, no conditioning drills, no playbook, etc.) is highly geared toward self-motivated players who are on the field for the love of the game. In a scholarship situation, it seems to me that a lot of the players have somewhat of a sense of entitlement and needn't work as hard as they should. The school is already paying them to be there and is telling them that they're the key to winning, why should they do any more than they have to in order to get and stay ahead? In addition, John has absolutely no time or patience for ego, and I doubt that even he would be able to deflate a D-I-sized narcissist.

Then again, I could very well be wrong and his trophy cabinet could have been full of crystal footballs. :)
Nice day, huh?

That is the reason John has been so successful at SJU is because of intellegent "studen-athelets" that buy into his phylosophy, but also have the talent and itellect to pull it off.  It's not so much a question  as could John succeed in D-II or D-I as it is could the atheletes comprehend and execute John's style of football.

I love everyone.  All is great in the world.

What is personal about making a little fun of someone's major?

Like I have said numerous times, I am sure Beaver is very worthy of his Gagliardi Finalist recognition...I'm sure he is a great running back, and I think its great that he works with kids.  To be recognized as a soph. is a great accomplishment.

I'm sorry warhaek nation, I'll try not to be so hard on your Beaver the rest of the week.

Weighing in on SJU's Gagliardi's chances for success in the WIAC if he coached there all these years:

This information is taken from the WIAC press release, about UWL's coach being named to the College Football Hall of Fame:

"Roger Harring posted a 261-75-7 record in 31 years during his tenure at UW-La Crosse, which ranks 12th in the history of college football at any level and fourth among NCAA Division III coaches. The Eagles won three national championships under Harring. UW-La Crosse won the NAIA II title in 1985 and won its first NCAA III football national championship in 1992 to become the first school in college football to win an NAIA II title and an NCAA III title. The program added another NCAA III Championship in 1995. In addition, the Eagles made 14 playoff appearances during Harring's career, compiling an overall record of 23-11, including 13-5 in NCAA III post-season play."

His lifetime percentage is .771, while Gagliardi's is .778, if I did my math correctly. So, if he was facing Harring all those years he wouldn't have had as many Ws...  But if Harring wasn't around, he might have had more, since we in the WIAC, who have been following it for 30 years, all know what a cupcake league this really is...

Gagliardi's a good coach, and would succeed anywhere, as would Harring...

Check your math -- Gagliardi did face Harring and was 4-1.

So by your account (and not mine), Gagliardi would have had an even better record if he'd coached in the WSUC/WIAC.

You may say ``Doh'' now. :)

boy, will I ever be glad when the WW-  SJU games is over!  Really getting sick of all the "my team is better then yours, Coach G is better then yours"....crap!  I hope the WIAC posters havn't invaded the MIAC site like they have done to ours.  Good luck to WW!

Let's not talk about pseudo-intellectual majors such as Physical Education or Liberal Studies. The real challenge is to major in Packaging or Turf Management, two possibilities at Stout.

The discussion about talented athletes gets to the heart of records and coaching success. Why does Whitewater have something like 14 all conference (all levels) guys and RF have 5? Because WW has more good players--the key to winning. The no. one requirement of any college coach is to recruit good players. Over the years WW, LaCrosse, and SJU have done that better than any other D3 schools in the area, hence great winning records. Someone said earlier that a great coach can get it done anywhere. I dont think so. Maybe great players can be recruited to Macalaster or Carleton, but I'd have to see it to believe it. And maybe you have to have coached for a while to realize that.

Generally, by the time you've coached long enuf to be at the college level, you are good at the x's and o's, good enuf to win IF you get more good players than the other coach. And if you consistently get them, you win consistently.

I think coaches, like quarterbacks, get too much credit and too much blame for winning or losing. But then, to argue against  myself, some coaches are better at recruiting than others and so should be given credit for that. How about Bo Ryan at Platteville and UW? He's got to be very good, like Gagliardi, at getting good players.

MESSAGE TO RECRUITS:  IN DOUBT? ENROLL AT STOUT. DON'T CARE? GO TO EAU CLAIRE. AT A LOSS? TRY LACROSSE. FEELIN' OUTTA JOINT? YOUR PLACE IS POINT. DON'T LIKE THE REST? DO WHAT'S BEST!

I didn't really want to wade into that coaches debate. As someone who was in school during the early years of Harring's run, I've got plenty of respect for him and in no means would bash him. (Mertz Mortorelli (SP?), perhaps, ... but not Harring.)

I was suckered in by one point: If you're going to use numbers to make your point . . . do your research.

Best of luck to both teams. Wish I could be there.

Anyone know road conditions on I-94 from Mpls to the Dells today?  Can't trust those weather guys.    Thanks

I'm not sure why it is INVADING a board to engage in the back and forth prior to a game. SJU, an MIAC team, is playing UWW, a WIAC team. Why would we want to engage in a dialogue where there is no dissent from the other side. I, for one, would find that pretty boring. Prior to the playoffs, posters for both WIAC teams would engage in the "My team is better than your team" stuff. Why not now? Help me out here.

The "How good is Gagliardi" is a little tiresome though, since the answer will never be known. The one thing that has to be remembered is that he has adapted to the changes in the game throughout his tenure. Why wouldn't he be just as adept at conforming to a coaching style, dropping some of the "NOS" e. g., if that was necessary to be successful in another setting?

GO WARHAWKS!!!  Take down the Johnies and keep rolling all the way to the national title.  It's the year of the Finer family so you will win it all.  Let the zone roll.

UWW faithful: is the playing surface at Perkins Stadium covered? Within the past hour it just stopped snowing here in central Minnesota & by the radar appears to be heading your way. It snowed for about 10 hours non-top & we have 4" of fluffy powder.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
