Dear Warhawk Fan,

Just a friendly safe journey from the OAC Board.  Unfortunately, I will not be able to make my 6th trip to Salem, but to let you know, let the folks in Salem and Roanoke know you are there for the game if you get in early, they are great hosts and will help you out where necessary.

Lets hope for an entertaining affair between to great squads and may the best team in D3 take home the Bowl victory (let's just hope they wear purple and are from A-town)

Come on, what did you expect, I am a Mount Alum  ;)

GO RAIDERS

UDub Fever

An All-UWW team.............wow, where do I begin.  I would have to say the best player I have ever played with would have to be Jake Wolter.  From there you can pick a handful of athletes that have gone through the rich tradition at WW.

You're guaranteed to be half correct.  I'm afraid that's all you'll get, though.

A tradition unrivaled...

Anyone come up with some great "Beaver" slogans for posters at the game yet? I've thought of a few, but they are too "risque" for ESPN. It's hard thinking of one without any sexual inuendos.

Almost 24 hours untinl we leave, yahooooo!

Speaking of Beaver, an article from the Roanoke Times posted 7 hours ago -

Thank you, Seoul guy, A miracle has happened.  Mark Berman has actually written a positive article.  When he was at the DNR in Harrisonburg and wrote about BC or any other team on his beat, for that matter, he always found something negative to showcase to try and get people riled up.  Maybe he has grown up? Nah, that couldn't be.  Maybe he's just making nice.  I wouldn't trust him farther than I could throw him.  But it's a nice piece on Justin.

Good luck UWW this weekend and safe travels to all who are going. If you run into any NCAA officials while in Salem, why don't you lobby for a change of venue for the Stagg whenever the deal with Salem runs out. I mean, the Salem people are really nice and friendly but, if you have the pleasure of watching your favorite team play into December, wouldn't you rather be going to So. Fla., Ariz. or So. Cal.?

Perhaps those who could afford it would.  As for me, I rather prefer Salem.  It's a wonderful facility, full of great, helpful people who know how to put one of these functions on.  I'm frankly tired of everything having to be in Florida or California.  DIII football is not about glitz.  It's about kids who still want to play, who have ability, but don't get paid to play.  They come from west Pa., northern Wisconsin, the hills of West Virginia, Oregon, you name it.  Why do we have to be like DI and try for glamorous.  It adds to the cost.  Believe me, those venues would cost a whole lot more and be a lot less friendly!  You don't know a good thing when you have it.  Sorry, but this keeping up with the Joneses burns me to a crisp.  You just hit a nerve.  A BIG NERVE.  I'll get off the soap box now, as I tell my students.

Well O-mom, I hear your brownies are great, but I just disagree. I can see I struck a nerve, though. The Salem stadium is nothing special, although the people were warm and friendly (unlike the weather when I was there). "Warm" doesn't necessarily equal glamorous or expensive. And it's not about keeping up with anybody. The nice kids who play in the game in a warmer place would still have their ability, want to play and not get paid. But those of us who want to watch the kids would be able to neatly stow our carry-on luggage in the overhead bin, and not have to tote a trunk for our parkas, Sorrell boots, and other cold weather necessities.
And I like it when I can use a koozie to keep my beer cold, instead of to prevent my fingers from freezing.

Can a math major help me out....isn't 230 wins 20 losses and 3 ties a 90.9 winning percentage?  Well, whatever it is....is a crazy number to look at.
When you figure a winning percentage, ties count as half a win.  So 230-20-3 becomes 231.5 wins in 253 games.  231.5 / 253 = 0.915 or 91.5%

Actually, there are THREE different ways that ties are sometimes handled, depending on who's counting.  The half-win/half-loss method is the most common, and was obviously the one used for the 91.5% figure.  Wildcat's method (wins divided by total games) is logical if you take 'winning' percentage literally - a tie is NOT a win!  A third way is also sometimes used - simply drop the ties entirely.  By that technique, LK has an EVEN more astounding 92% - 230 wins divided by 250 games that reached a won/loss conclusion.

By whatever method, I'd have to agree with Wildcat - it is 'a crazy number to look at'!  I would imagine it is probably the highest winning percentage for any coach in any sport at any level who has coached at least 200 games.

On further consideration, it probably is not quite the highest - e.g., Kenyon's swimming coach is probably higher (as would be the swimming coach at Ann Arbor (MI) Pioneer HS, where the girls have won something like 11 straight state titles and the boys are at about 15 and counting - the last time either team lost a dual meet was, I believe, somewhere in the 1980s!), and also a handful of other coaches in 'minor' sports where dynasties beyond even MUC's dreams exist!

Fortunately, those of you who don't like Salem aren't the ones making the decision...

It's monetary...not only does Salem do it well, but they are able to be cost effective with the whole thing.  The community supports it...don't think you can just pick up the Stagg Bowl and move it somewhere that can't guarantee the local support and the deals associated with it.

D1-AA is in Chattanooga...not exactly a glamorous locale, and similarly Florence, Alabama...sure its warmer, but by no means a guarantee of great weather

I don't think anybody is looking for glamorous...just above freezing temps.

Last time I checked 42 and sunny is above freezing.  In fact, for folks from Ohio and Wisconsin it's a heat wave!  :D

Hey, we could move the game to Canton, Ohio.  25,000 seats, artificial turf, and lots of experience handling the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival, and the Ohio State Football Chmpionships.

Best of all, it's only 10 minutes from my home and 25 miles from Mount Union.  Think of all the money the NCAA would save by not having to pay for Mount to travel.  ;D

Seriously, Salem has been great for DIII and the Stagg.  They deserve to keep the game.
