Both Coach Borland and Coach Zweifel will definitely be candidates. However  do not expect this to be like the Barry Alvarez replacement, as UW Whitewater will post it for sixty days and then interview all potential candidates.
I have heard some interesting comments from some of the big boosters in Whitewater about who will and will not ghet the job,and was told that they will have a say in it. MONEY TALKS
Anyways it will be interesting to see what UW Whitewater alums apply for the job,as the majority of division three coaches are alums of the school that they coach

Best Owen Schmitt story yet at Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  Since direct link doesn't work, go 1) www.post-gazette.com, 2) sports, 3) West Virginia U, and 4) 12-31-05 headline "Fullback Travels Long Road..."  The kid obviously left his heart in Wisconsin.

Great article Kestrel.  The whole Schmitt story has really painted O'Grady as an unselfish coach putting his players well being at the forefront.  Considering it's the second really good player he's advised to go the D-1 route.
Never underestimate the power of confidence. And never underestimate fifteen beers, a little enlightenment, and the power of Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock.

It certainly sounds like the program will get a quality coach. If not Borland or Zweifel, what are the chances they stay with the program versus being hired somewhere else?

CaptainKurt

Lance Leipold is a very strong candidate.  He is the current coach at University of Nebraska-Omaha.

d3fbfanatic

Captain Kurt. You are definitely correct on the fact that Lance would be a great candidate. he is an alum, and is a very good football coach.
Barber Grene I think that Brian Borland would be more likely to stay with the program then Stan would.
One thing which many people do not know about Stan is he has applied for almost every division three job in the state of Wisconsin which has been open Plattevilee, Eau Claire,Stout,Oshkosh, Cartage College, Caroll College, and has been turned down for everyone. So there must be something that the hiring committee's at those schools did not like about him. Also he was a a division two school, and was fired due to poor win loss record prior coming to Whitewater.
The whole process which will not start until the conclusion of the 2006 football season will be very interesting. I am just hoping that the fact that more then one copach on the staff at UW Whitewater will be applying for the job will not hurt the coaches primary duty during the season which is to win games. As their are some very very very very big egos on the staff
This is why in my mind Barry Alvarez did what he did. Unfortunately Bob Berezowitz is not Barry Alvarez, and Whitewater will ahve to wait until sometime in early 2007 to find out who the new head coach will be.

So who are the "other" WIAC'ers that have potential for getting invites to NFL camps?  I know that there are many great athletes out there, but will any any get a chance or will they have to go play CFL or european leagues for a few years?

The all-conference teams seemed to have more underclassmen on them than usual this year (in my opinion), will this result in a big year for the WIAC in the NFL camps in the years to come?

Curiosity starting to build for the 06 season.  What are the chances Whitewater looses a game or two now that they have the target on their back?

The history of post-draft free agent signings of WIAC players hasn't resulted in very many staying around their respective NFL team's camp  into summer training camp.  The tight end from Oshkosh will possibly get a free agent offer.  Looking at the departing seniors, any other player getting a shot is definitely a long shot.

I am hearing rumblings that UW-Whitewater cornerback Trey Bell is in line to sign a free agent contract with an NFL team prior to being allocated to NFL-Europe this spring.  Bell was a participant int he 2005 Hula Bowl and impressed a number of NFL scouts.  He was in line to be drafted last spring until he blew out his achilles tendon just a couple days prior to his official NFL work out.  I talked to him during the Warhawks recent playoff run and he tells me that his rehabilitation was very successful.   After suffering the injury while preparing for his NFL workout, I sure hope he gets the chance this spring!

I know that I am late with this but, that UW- Whitewater team was something else!  Yeah, some may say that there are certain plays to point out to blame.  None the less, I thought the better team did not win that day and I have seen a great representation of a school in more ways then one.

As an observor, there were a number of unsportsmanlike conduct activities, by the Mount, that were missed but seen on ESPN.  There was no to little response by the Warhawks.  I realize it may be a very small victory in the terms of rank and winning, but it matters to an ol' guy watching where he came from.  I am not giving any excuses for them, as refered to in my first paragraph, I am just stating, you represented your school and your state so much better then the opposition.

Congrats to the UW-Whitewater team for their class and the "never quit" attitude they followed through with until the last gun.

It's much harder to defend as there is an unnecessary added pressure when you performed well the previous season.  Of course they have a target on their back.  This does not go to say that they will lose a game, but their success last season will obviously be talked about by the oppositions coaching staff throughout the week when they prepare for the Warhawks this coming year.  Summary: this season will be more difficult to repeat than the last one.

Who knows, Whitewater went 7-3 and then 14-1.  With that mindset, take a look at every team that finished above .500 last season with a young squad, and consider them to be sleepers this year.  There's an awful lot of teams that fit that description.  It's anyone's season for the taking.

KennethK

How about in WIAC.  Last year seems like most posters thought LX was the team to beat based on their strong tradition.  What two or three teams in the WIAC have the best shot  at knocking off WW?  Who does WW play in their non conference games?

WIACPOWER

KennethK,

No replys for the 2006 season so I'll give it a shot....how about Oshkosh??they came alive last year and have a lot returning....EC will be there....but someone is going to have to knock out WW,  who will be favored!!!

KennethK

It appears that EC looses a lot to graduation, including their starting QB.  I figured 06 would be more of a rebuilding year for the Blue Golds.

We scrimmaged against Oshkosh this year  as Tom Journell ( former UW River Falls Asst.)  is good friends with the Oshkosh Head Coach.  They are a very smart football team.  I emphasize smart because even though they aren't the biggest, they seemed to make great reads against our main guys in August.
I would think Whitewater would have to be the favorite just because they are the defending champs.  As usual, it should be a great dogfight.
Over on our board, some of us are talking about the Hula Bowl.  The CCIW has 1 member playing-Lenny Radtke Sr. Linebacker from North Central.  Does the WIAC have any members playing?
