EC loses to Alma, MI 33-30 in OT.  Blugolds block 4 kicks but the offense played very poorly, especially the QB.  At one point in the game, he was 5-19.  EC outgained pretty big in yardage.

UWL leads Point 29-7 in the 3rd.

UWW leads 20-7 near the end of the 3rd

I may not have much to say, but I'll say it anyway.

pastprime,

How are things? Nice win for UWW. The NWC had some experience playing Azusa Pacific a few years ago, and they were always a tough team. For UWW to beat them pretty handily says a lot.

Say, did you get a chance to see UW-Stout play Hardin-Simmons a couple of years ago? If so, what did you think? Linfield plays them later tonight and will be the underdog. I get the feeling Hardin-Simmons is fast as heck and is going to be extremely tough.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Please note, this is not going to be a very favorable review for the hawks. I tell it how I see it, and it was not pretty.
The Good. The Defense under the leadership of Brian Borland once against stepped it up, and played great. They were missing Ryan Kleppe as unless they blitzed they did not have much of a pass rush. Kleppe Please come back soon
The Bad-The offense's overall performance was not the prettiest thing in the world. They need to STEP IT up and start dominating. A team with nine of 11 starters back should not be struggling like they are on offense. The HOLDING Penalties by the offensive line need to stop they look flat out pathetic. Are they the Stagg bowl runners up or the Garbage bowl champions?
The Ugly-Once again the running attack with Justin beaver was not a NCAA leading rusher performance. I was happy to see some of the younger backs step it up when put in the game. Does anyone know if Beaver even had 100 yards rushing it didn't seem like it           Overall a win is a win. However things need to improve and improve especially on the offensive line quickly. The WIAC starts next week and Oshkosh is a much improved team and play well at the beginning of the season. We will also be able to see how good we are after next week as APU plays host to lacrosse and one month from today Lacrosse pays a visit to W Whitewater Perkins Stadium. I am sure APU will give Lacrosse a battle as well.
In short the Warhawks did not improve as a whole from game one to game two.

I was at that game. They are fast ass heck as you said and can throw it.

Their fans travel well, too.

That team was the best I have ever seen a Stout team play, except for last year's Whitewater squad.

BlueDevil, Thanks for your comments on Hardin-Simmons. Sounds like some pretty high praise.

Hats off to both UWW and Azusa Pacific for the scheduling. What it's all about. Good win.

Nice win for UWW against a team that often plays NAIA juggernaut Carroll closer than anybody. Here's hoping UWLX provides a WIAC-two-fer out in Calif. next Saturday.

As mentioned earlier - Alma 33, UWEC 30, in overtime...

'Golds led, or were tied the whole game... Alma had a chance to win in regulation, but the 'Golds blocked a FG, to send it to OT. That was one of four blocks on the day - an extra point, and two punts, too. One punt was fallen on for a TD... So, a great effort on the special teams goes for naught.

Golds kicked a FG in OT; Alma's QB, Josh Brehm, then ran it in from 4 yards for the win. He was 36 of 57 for 358 yards, but really killed the 'Golds more with his running/scrambling ability... He's a senior, and led the team in rushing with 24 carries for 76 yards... Many of them big plays to keep drives alive...

Key stats - 'Golds were but 4 of 17 on third down conversions, and the time of possession was about 50 minutes to 40, in favor of Alma. They ran 90 plays, vs. 67 for UWEC...

Listened to the game on the radio, and didn't get a good feeling, even though the 'Golds were ahead the whole game... Alma stayed lurking in the weeds, and I just didn't feel the 'Golds would be able to hold on... Seemed like Alma made a lot of big plays when it needed them, and seemed to always have the momentum, as strange as that would seem, since they trailed the whole game...

'Golds have a week to regroup, but it doesn't get any easier, as conference play starts... Whitewater comes to town on the 30th... 'Golds could drop to 1-3... Ouch...

RF win details:  Falcons down 10-0 at half, score 24 pts. in third quarter and hang on for 24-17 win. RF turns ball over 6 times on 3 fumbles, 3 interceptions, losing 5 of them. Lutes turn it over 5 times, losing  it four, I think.

Anderson gets something like 78 yds rushing out of 150 total yds rushing for Falcons.

Bruce Baillargeon, dback, has 2 interceptions, one forced fumble, 9 tackles--a candidate for D player of week.

Falcons left wishbone bcuz of too many turnovers. Now what?

Quote from Warhawkfootball.com:

"While most fans were unfamiliar with Azusa Pacfic, an NAIA program that is allowed 36 scholarships. The team from the metro-Los Angles area had dominated NCAA Division III teams in recent years. Since 1996, the Cougars were 40-7 vs. NCAA Division III teams and has won 13 straight and 15 of the past 16."

I found this information helpful, personally, in bringing perspective to UWW's  27-7 win over AP yesterday.  I, too, am concerned about the inconsistent play of the offense compared  to the way they were clicking on all cylinders at the end of last season,  BUT, AP had a great defense and will probably be one of the best defenses they will see all year and they still managed a 27-7 victory.  Hawks need to clean up the penalties as one came at a high price....TE TD called back......  Great job Hawk's defense, especially shutting down the run!  Next week the long road through the Wacky WIAC begins and this season everyone will be "Hawk Hunting!"

Random thoughts on the Eagle-Pointer match-up: LaCrosse is pretty good, although I wish they'd do a little more to establish the run. While the run/pass ratio was 39-33, a lot of the runs came after the game was decided. They need to bring up the yds/carry number. Backup Senior QB Markus Lang deserves kudos for a most competent effort in leading the Eagles when Schu' left with an injury in the second quarter. The Pointers had cut the lead to 14-7 with their first decent drive, and had the momentum for the only time in the game. Lang, aided by 3 Pointer penalties, drove the Eagles 70-plus yards for the score and regained the upper hand. Point never recovered. While the 3 penalties helpd, it was Lang who deserved the credit for he drive, in my opinion. I know that Coach Miech is an excellent coach, but the Pointers' razzle-dazzle really hurt them. They fumbled the opening kick-off on a reverse, and gave the Eagles the ball on the 10 yrd. line. Ouch. I know that if it had worked, it would have been brilliant, but it set the stage for a quick 14 point Eagle lead. I have said before that I think the Pointers go into the La Crosse game expecting bad things to happen, and the opening kick-off fumble allowed that feeling to snowball. Later, Point threw off of a reverse, and got intercepted. It was not a pretty play. Family obligations precluded my attending the Spud Bowl picnic, but it is obviously a great tradition. I hope to attend at some future date.
