Yep, it's still Point 20, UWEC 17, final, OT

So, since I'm a 'Golds fan, and have just witnessed one of the most frustrating games I've seen in a long time, I'm going to vent and second guess here in this long-winded recap. Plus, it will be burried soon in the Warhawks recap, so I'm gonna let it rip. Ha.

Blugolds had all the momentum in the game, halfway through the third, leading 17-3. Pointers were lifeless, having just been stopped on O. But Point punted, and the ball was muffed, and they recovered. You could just see the deflated team come to life on the sidelines... Had about 40 yards or so to drive for the TD, to make it 17-10.

Another turnover later on a fumble, and the Pointers were able to capitalize, to make it 17-17. And then it gets frustrating if you are a 'Golds fan.

Blugolds drive to midfield, and face 4th and 1 with around 1:30 left in the game. The line had been opening holes in the second half for the running game, so go for it. Right? Why play for OT? Why concede at that point?

But what if you don't get the first? Turn over the ball at midfield? Well, what difference does it make? If your O can't get a yard, you don't deserve to win. Putting the ball in the hands of the Pointers, to either drive the length of the field in regulation for a game winning TD or FG, or playing on a shortened field that starts at the 50, is playing not to lose!

Run the ball!!!! Get the first down, for crying out loud! You have a chance to win in regulation! But they punt, to pin the Pointers back, and play for overtime, I guess...

The Pointers' drive did stall, and they punted. 'Golds got the ball back with 4 seconds left in regulation. So, the Golds did get one last chance to win in regulation. But a little dump pass to run out the clock, setting up OT. Throw it down field!!!!!

So, basically, the Golds gave the Pointers two chances to win, compared to one for the Golds, in OT! Once by punting to them in regulation, and then guaranteeing the Pointers another chance to match or better whatever the Golds might do in OT.  Grrr!

Not sure those who weren't there can tell what the heck I just said, or tried to say... ;) But the 'Golds had the Pointers down, and just didn't finish it. And that is disappointing. Credit to UWSP for taking advantage of a big momentum swing on the muffed punt fumble recovery, and riding it, and thereafter, playing for a W...

Nice win by the Warhawks! They don't need no stinkin' offense!  ;) And congrats to UWL, who I hope runs the table, so they can join the Warhawks in the playoffs...

Congrats to UWW on the win over UMHB. The team that made the least mistakes won the game. The CRU made too many unforced errors to win against a quality opponent.

Due to the type offense the CRU runs, offensive penalties are a killer... and they had too many.

The WW punter did a great job and kept UMHB in poor field position all game long. UMHB defense was stellar as usual. UWW defense was solid as well.

No one can doubt the Purple CRUsh defense is for real.

Ryan Kleppe (#95) for UWW is a stud. He was a major factor, especially in early going.

One more post... UWW vs UMHB was one of the best defensive showings by two teams that I have seen in a long time.

Just got back from the game.  WOW!!!!!!!!!  UWW won the first 20 seconds.  UMHB won the other 59:40.   ;)

Seriously, great game.  UMHB missed a couple of chances that you can't do against another great team.  However you must take note that UWW is hanging their hat on one KO return for a TD as total yardage definitely favored UMHB.  Saw first half stats on the field and UMHB had 95 yds. to UWW's 78.  Final yardage was UMHB 204, UWW 120.

Talked to UWW head coach briefly after game,  classy guy and very complimentary.  Said games like this will only help D3 football in Texas get more recognition.  Also want to shout out to U-dub-dub, footballfan413 and other UWW faithful that made the trip.  Classy fans as well.  They knew they had been in a ballgame.    ;D

Best part of all this was in the long run, it does not hurt that much.  (I know seedings are affected, but it will not affect getting into playoffs and both sets of fans saw what D3 championship football in another part of the world looks like.)  Hats off again to both teams for this masterful stroke of scheduling !!!!!!!!!
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

Congrats to WW on winning a tough game.

Hope we can keep pace and possibly get an at-large bid.

To Captain: Warning,  a UWW Post by someone not on The UWW Chat room bandwagon. In reviewing the statistics, it looked like you guys got whipped. You picked UWW by 21? Great teams win close games.  Maybe you guys will realize how much you miss Mr, Beaver your All Starr. More later.  Got to work. God Bless you guys!!

I wouldnt say givin up only 200 yds of total O and cause 3 TO is getting whipped, even if we only gained 120 ourselves...  The O struggles against one of the best D's in the nation and you want to say that we miss Beaver, umm what did our O do last week against your great D over in Pville.

I am surprised by the Texas team against UWW.  I will have to give it to them and give them the respect they deserve.  Nice victory.  Hope there is no let down next week.

Congrats UWW on a good win.  I wish I'd have skipped class and made the trip to belton :P

Maybe we can do this again in the near future ;D
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

The LAX/Stout game was very disappointing.   I was not overly impressed with LaCrosse as a team.   Very disappointed with Stout as a whole.  It has been a frustrating season being a Devil backer.

The game could be summed up with one statistic.
Starting Field Position:
Since the first drive for LAX, they consistantly had the ball at or near midfield, while Stout was lucky to start @ the 30.  An average of 19 yards better starting field position.
The LAX punter was an artist with his great kicking skills.  8 of 9 punts that went inside the 20!!!
Teeples, was a much bigger hitter than I had remembered.
The playcalling was very predictable when LAX was rolling but when it works, it works.  Run on 1st and 2nd and throw on third for a first.  Consistantly, Schumann made great passes to Kettenhoffen and Everson.
I hop Stout can finish off strong and I feel they will give Whitewater the best game of anyone this season from the WIAC.
Congrats to LAX and do the conference well in the playoffs on the road @ St. John's?!?!?!?!

I have to make one last comment on LAX.  What was up with the pre-kickoff Shananigans(sp?)?!?!?!?!?!
