I'm pretty sure the debate about steroids and the use of them within college football programs is as productive as debating apples and oranges.  We all know that the laws of averages tell us that some players whether we hope they aren't on them are abusing them regularly.....Its awful to think players need to use drugs to compete, but due to the competitive nature of the sport it is silly to think every program whether they are of championship caliber or proverbial doormat is clean....Because they are not.  Its a dirty little secret that success, popularity, and status has convienently hidden for years.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that steroids is part of the game, just look at the NFL as an example.   Unfortunately the abuse of a few stupid people whether guilty or not will now tarnish an already struggling program like Stout's.  No one wins this one i'm afraid.

I'm sorry to hear about the horrible judgment of those Stout players.

The NCAA needs drug testing for ALL sports for all divisions and all players!

The NCAA does random drug testing during the D-3 play-offs.  Because of UWW's success in the post season the last 2 years, the team has had  random players (they say "random," but it tends to be mostly starters,)  ;)  tested after many play-off games, I believe.  Atleast there is an attempt by the NCAA to police it in that regard.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the Stout program.

Kind of reminds me of the chant (cheer) that caused so much uproar on this board pages ago.  Unfortunately (sadly) we're not talking about screwing up a play anymore.  Now it's about the lives of a few young men...

To Devil Badger Gopher: I understand how disappointed you are. However, I think the Program can make good of their Bad. Remember your All Conference player Vargas, about 15 years ago. he attempted suicide, recovered and graduated in Construction management with the support of the Stout Community. We can do this with the accused and anyone abusing drugs .We support and encourage them like Mr. Vargas, who I hope is doing well.  This is not to say we do not hold the criminally accused accountable as well! Merry Christmas and God Bless you and the Stout Community!

Condolences to the Stout program, staff and university community in general.   It's unfortunate the incredibly bad judgement of so few will cast a shadow over so many.  Good luck weathering the storm created by this mess.

A steroid test costs $150 for each sample.

According to the NCAA they had a little more than 380,000 athletes in all sports and all divisions.

Total cost of testing every athlete for steroids: $57 Million per year if you test them only once.  Double or triple that if you'd like to test them more than that.

That doesn't include any testing for marijuana, cocaine or any other illegal drug. Everyone knows that testing is not 100% effective and most studies will tell you that testing is not an effect deterrent.

Just Bill,

Good point the $$$.  Okay let me change my mind...  why not random testing for everone .. you do it on a weekly basis and you pull 1 or 2 players from each team..that would probably stop a lot of it.  whey wait until the playoffs when a team could be not out of the conference race by a team loaded up on roids??

Obviously they didn't do enough steroids with the kind of record they posted this year.

Maybe it would have helped if I used one of these  ::) faces for all of you to know that I was only kidding.  Some of you guys go right for the jugular.  Relax gentlemen.

To me.....it just seemed rather ironic that a team that gets uncovered for using steroids (as the article specifically stated) goes 3-7.  Steroids are supposed to be used so you can win more games.  Note the irony in this situation!!!!!!

Take it easy Bill.  Quit judging every single person that you disagree with.

Obviously it was a joke, but it was a joke in very poor taste and you deserved to be called out on it.  I did jump on Warhawk 96 unfairly and I backed off of it.

WIACPOWER - I know some D-I schools are expanding their testing/education/treatment programs.  Minnesota is one that I read about recently.  The problem isn't necessarily testing, it's what do you do when you find a positive.  I think as a school you have an obligation to try and help the student-athlete in his treatment and/or recovery.  That's more cost that might end up being more than the original test.  It's a tricky balancing act.

RE: Steroid Testing

My best friend from HS went to Northwestern on a wrestling scholarship.  For some reason he was very frequently "Randomly" chosen for drug tests.  It seemed "odd" that he was the one tested most on the team.  Someone knew he was clean...

Why do we even care if two Stout FB players got busted for seeling the marching dust, and the D-ball.  Wow college football players using Roids and selling or using illegal drugs.  As anyone read the news this decade.  Last time I looked most ball players are type A personalities with very addictive behavoiral patterns.
