Old UWRF Coach Mike Farley always said, "It's a transfer league," meaning that there is a thin margin of talent that separates the league champion from everyone else.  More often than not, the factor that tips the balance is transfer talent that just shows up without benefit of much recruitment.  An unexpected windfall. as an economists would say.

Take UWW this year.  #1 tackler Tristan Borzick shows up from Illinois State.  #3 tackler Widuch came in from Wisconsin a couple of years ago.  Or La Crosse. QB Schumann came from Minnesota, OT Gyllin from Wisconsin, and DT  (Mayville guy) comes from Wiscosnin.  Or, Stevens Point: Cody Childs? Wisconsin. QB Borchart? Grand Valley State (???). Put the same combination of players on any three of the teams finishing below them and the standings could easily change.

My cynical side says  take away the transfer advantage and the dominance of some programs would decrease a lot.

I've found over the years that most winning teams in D3 have a handful of significant players who started their careers elsewhere. It's just a fact of D3 life, I guess.

I know that some of the transfers to La Crosse were recruited by us before they signed with their D1 program.

Sometimes effort has long-term payback.

This is actually fairly common at other D-III programs, too. It does seem to have benefits, indeed.

I remember when my son was a HS senior in Menomonie and he was lining up his visits for college (His 5 visits were all d1 or d2 schools), John O'Grady from RF called our house on Thanksgiving morning and simply said, "I know your son will be choosing one of these scholarship schools, but if he ever decides to come back and be close to home, just know that he will always be welcome here".  Chris went to North Dakota and stayed but I will always remember that call.  It was classy.

stoutguy, sometimes O'G is honest to a fault.  He told my neighbor kid, who was kicking around the idea of becoming an architect, "We don't have an architecture program at UWRF, but UWM does.  And, it's supposed to be a good one. You should look into it."  He told Owen Schmitt that he had a good chance of making it at a higher level and never said one word to discourage him.  He could have easily harped on the fact that it was going cost Owen $20,000 to walk on at West Virginia that first year, with no promise of a scholarship.  Meanwhile, Falcon fans are waiting for what goes around to come around.

KitchenSink..... I like the overview of who each team is losing... I have a friend from Stevens Point and he was telling me that Point has 3 srs. that are able to come back next year and that they were going too.  Dan Robinson who was first team all-conference d-end in 2005 but broke his leg in the first game of the year.  Brett Hirsch who started half the year at FS and led the team with 5 picks.  Lincoln Berg who started half the year at FS and half at LB and was 2nd team all conference.  I dont go to point so I dont know anything about these guys but the person that was talking to me seemed excited so maybe these 3 coming back is good for the point program.

Kestrel-  Sounds like O'G is putting what is best for the student-athlete first and you're bitter about that?  That is an honest coach that players love to play for.  If Schmitt has an opportunity to play at a higher level and possible in NFL O'G did what was best for the player.  As for your neighbor he recommended a different school that offers the best opportunity for the student.  Your complaining about honesty blows my mind in today's sports where coaches and players don't honor contracts and have very little loyality at the higher levels.

I think you took Kestrel's post the wrong way WR. I'm sure it was meant as a compliment to O'G.

You mean for the Warhawks, or that FG attempt the other night?  ;D

You know Romo played for Steve Berezowitz in HS. I'm guessing he steered him toward UWW.

He was also one of the Berezowitz boy's roomates in college (which may be what you're thinking about). In fact in one of the recent ESPN the magazines the Berezowitz kid talks about Tony Romo.

we also had trouble competing with Viterbo for local basketball and baseball players at one time because our coaches discouraged playing both sports.  I haven't heard as much about that lately.

I think a lot of kids get dreams of glory, go to a D1 school, and get buried on the depth chart.  What O'Grady said (as reported above) was classy.

Romo didn't room with one of the Berezowitz boys in college.  He played for Steve in High School.  Steve is doing the articles in the press.

Oh no! No more Dodge Stratus?

The Avenger, introduced at the North American International Auto Show with the help of popular professional race car driver Juan Pablo Montoya, will carry a U.S. starting price of $18,895, more than $1,600 below the outgoing Dodge Stratus it replaces, Chrysler executives said. Montoya will drive a Dodge Avenger on the NASCAR racing circuit this spring.
