DITTO.  In the end, these players are all from the WIAC and D-3 and success for any one of them means success for all!

Drake has apparently bought out the game with La Crosse in order to play Northern Iowa in Des Moines.  Sorry...wish it could have been a day other than Sept 22.

Goo 62

I agree Englebert has overcame alot, bouncing back from an injury it tough.  I dont know him personally but I do wish him the best and it would be great to see him make along with the other 3.  All Im saying is he doenst have a very good chance with his talent and stats from college. Ryan Englebert       10  182  954   41  913   5.0   7   71  91.3.  These are actually pretty bad stats especially for 10 games.  Once again I have nothing against  Ryan that is just my opinion.  I saw the workout at UWW and he shouldnt of been there.

"Not for Long!"  It's actually one of my favorite quotes from Jerry Glanville....its actually the only quote I enjoy from him, but it holds so many truths.  Look at all the players D-1 especially, that have washed out or somehow found themselves bagging groceries or driving semi-trucks instead of catching and running for touchdowns in the big show.  The NFL is brutal and the competition is ridiculous so for these D-3 boys to get a shot is really GREAT.....BUT.....how long can they last will be the true test.  Anyone can show up and run a great 40, but can you make a move on Brian Urlacher in the short flat and run up field for extra yards or will you be just another one of his TFL bitches.......good luck to that!!

Goo, 954 yards on a very bad team is pretty impressive, especially considering they did not have a QB that could throw.  If stats were that important how did his friend Matt Pagel get a shot with 421 career yards?  I think Englebert ended up with somewhere around 3,000 career yards.

Madhawk

This is in reply to Goo 62.  A low 4.5 40 yard dash and 25 + reps for a running back Englebert's size are definately NFL caliber numbers.  Look at the combine numbers from this year and the past 5 years, these numbers would put him in the top 10 each year.  I don't know how the kid didn't belong at the workout.  If he didn't belong neither did Derrick Stanley.  A 4.55 40 yard dash isn't real impressive for a 170 lb receiver, but hey the scouts obviously see something in these guys otherwise they wouldn't have been asked to show up that day.  I heard from UW-Whitewater players in attendance that each guy tore it up during position drills, and that is what counts the most if you have the athleticism, which all of these guys have.  We need to quit being negative and get behind these guys.  It isn't too often that the WIAC has 4 guys in the same season with the possibility of playing on after college.

Devil Badger Gopher

Just because you are not in the workout Max does not mean others from other teams should not be.  I mean look at your running back, he had a down year as well statistically for a team that played 14 games, but yes, I know, he was injured. The numbers just did not match to the year before, but look where that got him with post season accolades.  Stats only tell half the story as Englbert was on a team with 2 number one running backs and that should not be held against him.

Once again Goo 62 is running his mouth and making no sense.  Englebert's stats are very impressive considering the team he played on.  Apparently you didn't see too many UW Stout football games did you?  With a horrible supporting cast with the exception of Jesse Wendt, the worst coaching staff that has ever been assembled, and a very mediocre defense, it's a surprise Englebert put up the numbers he did.  And as far as him not belonging at that workout, what the hell is in your pipe man?????  Englebert is an awesome talent and has a tremendous work ethic.  He's as deserving as anyone to have had an NFL workout.  Like I said before, Goo 62 is just another jealous, negative individual who would rather see someone great fail rather then succeed.

CaptainKurt

Devil Badger Golpher....no need to call people out by name on here, with the exception of O'Reilly.  He's a douche.

I think Goo 62's main flaw in his argument is that he is basing it all on Englebert's stats from college.  The concensus on this board is that we have concluded that scouts are not interested in a player's college stats, but rather their raw, physical attributes and their ability to be a player in their NFL team's system.  With this said, Englebert's college stats are irrelevant in the eyes of scouts, and therefore should not be used by Goo 62 in his argument.

In response to everyone saying that Goo would like to see Englebert fail in his NFL endavor....relax a little bit.  You all make it sound as if Goo would like to see Englebert die of cancer tomorrow.  Goo didn't say anything along these lines.  For anyone to say "Goo 62 is just another jealous, negative individual who would rather see someone great fail rather then succeed".......what?  That is a pretty bad interpretation of what Goo posted.  He never said anything remotely close to that.

And just for the record, I'd love to see Englebert drafted and respresent the WIAC on the national level with fellow alumnus Tony Beckham.  That would be hot-fire.

The bottom line is that athletes in D3 need to focus on academics.

OTOH, I certainly pull for any of them who get a shot.

Just to clarify a point so far none of these guys has "gotten a shot" at the NFL.  All that's happened is that they've worked out for NFL scouts.  Regardless of how good they did or didn't look in those workouts none have been offered a free agent contact, none have been invited to any minicamps or anything else at this point.   They've simply worked out for them.

Now, I hope that all of them do get invited to a minicamp.  In fact I hope all of them make NFL rosters as active or practice squad players.  They've all worked hard to get where they're at, they're all exceptional talents and what D3 fan wouldn't pull for them.   The odds are tremendous but for the D3 level player the path most commonly starts in a workout and these guys took the first step.  Where it goes from here is largely out of their control.

Good luck guys.

JB, don't forget, and with Matt Turk.  ;)

My bad JB I didn't really catch the "drafted" part.

I have been following the message boards on here ever since I quit playing at Whitewater in 2004 to keep up to date with what is going on around the WIAC, and have never posted anything until today.  I just wanted to comment on this Ryan Englebert debate, and what was said by a certain warhawk poster (goo62)
First off, back when Ryan was a freshman, 2002 I believe, he rushed for over 100 yards against us and to be honest, was without a doubt the toughest running back I faced in my four years as a Warhawk.  He was big, fast and very agile, and showed a lot of heart.  I remember there was a play in the 3rd quarter when we were playing them and he lower his shoulder and ran me over.  Most guys would taunt, or begin celebrating after such a run, however he insisted on helping me up and gave me a pat on the back.  The past few years he has obviously been through a lot, an had to overcome some serious injuries, but for anyone to say that he didn't belong at that workout is absolutely out of line!!  I also talked to a current player that was in attendance while they worked out last week, and said that Englebert looked very good and out of the four guys was the only one who didn't drop a pass.  A 4.48 and 27 reps at 220+ pounds sounds very deserving of some NFL looks.  Good luck guys!

razor_ramone

I agree with the majority of the above posters. If none of the NFL scouts were interested in Ryan Englebert then he would have never been invited to workout. Obviously the Lineman of the year GOO62 was not good enough to even get an invitation to even work out for the scouts. Don't be jealous Goo62. I mean divisions three athletes are in school for one thing get an education, and if any of them have the athletic ability to gain the interest of the NFL scouts then that's awesome.
Let's remember it has been stated on this board in the past that if Bob Docherty gets an invitation to an NFL training camp well then so can Pete Schmidt. Obviously we will have to wait and see about that but let's remember Both Bob Docherty and Ryan Englebert were scholarship athletes at Wisconsin Docherty left the team prior to the 2003 season, and Ryan left in the spring of 2001.
So good luck to Pete Derek, Ryan and Wendt and to those of you who did not get a sniffed by the NFL scouts. Just be happy for those who have, and don't be jealous, and focus on getting that degree.
Gotta beat the best to be the best otherwise your just one of the rest

I agree with alot of the things that were said in the above statements.. But lets recall some names that have slipped throught the cracks here in the WIAC to the NFL debate...
The late matt pagel got a mini camp tryout, and continued his dream in the AFL.  Here is a prime example of what can happen.  This guy knew that he was going to play some level of pro football and didn't let anyone get in his way...  We should all be so lucky...

I feel this is the same situation for our 2 stout players.. All these guys want is a shot and who the hell is anyone on this board to judge these guys, no one on this board is scout in the NFL so lets wait and see what happens.

As for D-Stan and Pete "NFL" Schmidt, I wish both of these former teammates the best of luck. Even if these guys get an invite to a mini camp that is one step further than I or a majority of other posters on this board go to the league.  Also don't put Pete in the same category as Bob Doc.  Take it easy on the goo...

Live the dream you 4!!
