Website overhaul looks nice...now it's time to do something about that cartoon-looking Pointer mascot logo - it looks so elementary school-ish.  :-\

#8776
Final from Carson Park - UWEC 30 (3-0), Alma 14 (0-2)...

Unofficial results:
'Golds, trailing 14-10 at half, put up 20 points in the second half, moving the sticks, playing ball control, and grinding out the yards on the ground... Cory Sartorelli has 40 carries for 209 yards and three rushing TDs...

Sophomore QB Joe Nikolay, replacing the injured Kyle Paulson, makes his first collegiate start, executes the game plan, and does a decent job, 8-for-15, for 80 yards, and most importantly, no turnovers...

Blugold defense forces 6 turnovers (two fumbles and 4 INTs) and has one INT by defensive lineman Nate Rucker returned for a TD... DB Zach Paul becomes a candidate for WIAC defensive player of the week, with two fumble recoveries and an INT, gainst an offense that is likened to the old UW-River Falls wishbone attack, in that the Scots run a spread offense...

On to Whitewater for the conference opener next weekend...

Pacific Lutheran over UWRF in a wild one, 48 - 37.  Offensively, at least, Lutes had speed/quickness to rival St. John's.

48-37 is the final score, PLU over RF. Impressisons: that PLU today was better than SJU last week, that PLU would give anybody in our league a tough time, that they are a classy group of guys led by a classy coach (they could have scored a final td, but chose to run out the clock on the RF 2 yard line rather than push it in). Their defense may not be as good as SJU's but their offense is better, at least that was the  case today. Their qb was outstanding, and they have great quickness and speed. Nobody on their team over 270 lbs., but their quickness and athleticism more than make up for their relative lack of size.

RF never quit, even after trailing 28-7 at the end of the first quarter. Anderson w/over 150 yards rushing, and Zweifel with another 10 catches (record tying--his own in first  game) had great days. Neuman, Simonson, among others, stood out on D for the Falcons. When I actually check the stats, I may have to add other names.

The stats tell that Baillargeon w/10 tackles, Potter w/9, Mueller w/8 and Agrimson w/7 deserve mention as well. Falcons w/27 first downs as opposed to 20 for Lutes show how competitive Falcons were.

WW down 26-3 in 3rd Q. WW had f.g. attempt from 5 blocked when score was 20-3. SCSU scored on next drive, missed extra pt.

Sounds like Whitewater is going down to a D2 rival.

La Crosse struggled against Azusa Pacific today, winning in overtime.  The quarterback looked really shaky.

Just got back from the UWW/SCSU game and even though the final score didn't show it, it was a pretty close game.  UWW had some turnover problems and dropped pass problems that killed any momentum they had during the game.  The defense looked excellent, #99 and #98 were consistently in the backfield disrupting the QB, but the offense couldn't keep them on the sidelines.  I think they were a little tired in the fourth quarter but still were able to stop the Huskies when they needed to.  Good game UWW, if the Johnnies play you in the playoffs this year again and you play like you played today, they will definitely need to bring their "A" game.  Good luck the rest of the year!

farley101, I was curious about a couple key plays and what you thought about them.  First, the blocked 22 yard FG attempt by WW.  Was it simply a matter of good penetration by the SCSU defense, bad snap, low trajectory or a combination of factors that got the kick blocked. Earlier, WW had kicked a 52 yarder.
Secondly, the 4th and 5 at the 25 TD pass.  What happened to allow SCSU to score? Was it a check off at the line by the QB? Or were they going end zone all the way?  Those two were killer plays for WW. Thanks...

On the FG attempt, the snap looked alright but the kick was a bit low and SCSU had some great penetration.  On the TD, I'm not sure if he checked off since it seems that they call their plays at the line of scrimmage, no real huddle, and since that WR had the hot hand all night I'm sure he was the first read and got himself in position to make a great catch on the play.  He was a thorn in UWW's side all night, always seemed to find the holes in the zone and get 10-15 yards a catch.

It was a great game down to the last TD UWW scored.  When they missed the 2 pt conversion, the writing was on the wall but they still gave themselves the opportunity to score at the end, it just never came together.  The pass that #85 dropped in the end zone when it hit him between the numbers pretty much summed up the night for UWW.
