I can't figure this cannon guy thing out.  Two years ago we shot the cannon off from inside the stadium at all four home playoff games without any comment.  Last year we shot it off at the first three, again within the stadium, and  then we couldn't for the final game.  This year we've shot it off from within the stadium for the first two games and couldn't for the third.  It will be interesting what happens for the MHB game.  If we're unable to locate him within the stadium he will be on the hill.

There has been an NCAA observer at every playoff game for three years.  If the problem was with the NCAA how do you explain this?

Then how do you explain this, Wally?

What I do know is that the only occassion on which the NCAA has had a problem with the cannon, prior to our game, was after Wesley's chancellor complained.  We've shot it off in the presence of the NCAA's observer 9 times without any problem.

I thought that perhaps, with Wabash being a Quaker institution and all, they felt it was too violent.   ;)

Good advice BoBo there were quite a few Capital programs left over.

FYI, we're not Quaker. I can't explain any of what happened. Again, if someone from Wabash's athletic department or administration complained, I think the consensus from our fans is that's a weak move.

I have no inside information on Cannon-Gate 07, however a couple Bobcats with snow brushes were parked in the spot where the cannon is stationed each home game for a long, long, time.
Canyon Guy may have been denied access due to the fact of the weather conditions and the need to have that spot in the south end zone to park the snow removing equipment.

His location for the cannon yesterday on the ridge behind the SAC was a much more strategic spot militarily speaking.

CANNON GUY!  CANNON GUY!  CANNON GUY!

Just back to Chicago from the Perk.....Thank God for a room at Super 8. Can't believe how we dominated every phase of the game. Cudos to the Oline especially. How about our QB from the West Coast....he can throw the ball in any weather. In the last 6 years that I have been going to games that was the worst weather. How about the cannon guy who moved his cannon on a hill outside the stadium because Wabash complained.....way to go cannon guy! Wabash is now in a category with Wesley both losers who couldn't play with the cannon......maybe if you didn't allow as many touchdowns it wouldn't bother you as much. Cudos also to the band who stayed the whole game and the tuba guys who put on a short concert in the mens washroom. Wabash's all-american is a solid player but he wouldn't start ahead of #33,#40,or #50......their #1 wide recever was also a very good player. Next week MHB which should be tougher this time.....need a solid effort again at QB and more turnovers......Pound the Rock......

Can someone "in the know" confirm this?  I know the cannon guy wasn't in his normal spot, but did someone from Wabash really comlain?  They seem like a group that is so into tradition that they would welcome another team's traditions as well.

I talked to Mike, the guy who mans the cannon, prior to the game, and he said, "Wabash isn't going to let me setup the cannon in the stadium." that's just what he told me about an hour before the game when he was walking around the parking lot.

That's crazy.  For the life of me I will never figure out what the big deal is to other teams about the cannon.

Over on the radio, Gary and Voice were first saying that the Cannon Guy wasn't set up, although they knew he was there because, as they put it, the Cannon Guy unlock the gate as the three of them entered the Perk in the morning.  They didn't know why he wasn't set up.  Then they heard the cannon go off.  I guess they saw the smoke first, then a couple seconds later heard the blast (hence, he was far away from his normal position).  A little later, they mentioned that he was up on the hill, as voice put it, in a more strategically located area on the high ground overlooking the field.  Apparently, his normal firing location was commandeered for snow removal or other emergency equipment that needed to be near the field.  Maybe voice can come on here to verify the accuracy of my statements.  During one of the firings, they must have opened the pressbox window because the sound could be clearly heard, I think just proving to the listening audience that the Cannon Guy, in fact was in the house.  They soon closed the window, for obvious reasons, and the blasts were not heard over the airways again.

a postscript....I suppose the on-field officials did a pretty good job this week because the only controversy seems to involved the Cannon Guy.  He is undoubtedly the most popular man in Whitewater on game days.

In an ironic twist after each firing of the cannon the smoke drifted over the Wabash bleachers.  Well, with the wind I'm not sure "drifted" is the right word.

In earlier rounds, there are more games and more reps are needed, so the regional committee members handle a lot of games. Some of them don't really know the rules very well, and when you get to the later rounds and national committee members take over, you get a real interpretation of the rules.

Is it the same observer at every game?  Different observers may have different interpretations and/or different ways of enforcing the same rule (in this case, noisemakers).

This just tweaks me the wrong way a bit because you guys are dumping on Wabash for not being able to bring the cannon and all I've seen so far is speculation that Wabash had it shut down.  I can see where you're coming from and how that would be the easy assumption to make, but it just doesn't make sense to me that Wabash would care one way or another about your cannon.  We've played at stadiums with cannons before...I don't know why we'd care about your cannon.

If somebody's got something other than hearsay on this, please share.  And as has been mentioned here before, if it was somebody from the Wabash crew that requested the cannon stay outside, I stand in disagreement with that.  The cannon is 100% fine by me.

Well, that was sure a fun day!  Props first to the Wabash faithful as they were very impressive in their numbers, parking lot presentation and enthusiasm!  My votes for the playmakers............Shultz had a heck of a performance as the LG's went after him right off the bat! 5 picks, unbelievable defense! Jones definitely answered the question as to whether he can play in the snow.  If the UWLC game proved he is a Warhawk then this game proved he is truly a Wisconsin boy now!   :)  He had a great game.  Running game was spectacular with the two headed monster of Beaver/Pitz.  Great job o-line.  Glad to see Brady is back where he belongs in the #2 spot, IMO.  Kudos to the students for their numbers which I thought were really good considering the crappy weather. I realized the other day that we have all neglected to give props to the scout teamers who work hard every week making sure the starters can be at their best. Anyone know what happened to recognizing scout players every week along with the D and O players of the week this year?   Still got a big hurdle to clear this weekend.  The cru will come with something to prove.  GO WARHAWKS!!

I don't think anyone should be given a hard time for asking that the rules on the books be enforced.

[sarcasm on]If Wabash didn't complain about the cannon, did your guys stomp on the W, the one you couldn't see under the snow at the 50 yard line, in an act of disrespect, trash talk when the score was 35-0, or something like that?  We have to find something we don't like about you! [sarcasm off] You guys seem like pretty stand-up kind of guys. This topic comes up every year about now so please don't take any offense to it.  Wesley went out of their way to complain out it, if you believe the press clippings.

Well, the Wabashers did not come out for the national anthem.

The cannon guy in the new spot was kind of cool.  (He could enfillade the entire visitor's section from that ridge ... ) ;D
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!
