Pickem's are posted thru the 1/4 FINAL round.  Check out the winners and losers here.  02 Warhawk had a 4 for 4 week and has taken over the playoff lead...footballfan413 remains the overall season leader.

Some reflections on the upcoming MHB game:

1. Turnovers in the last game killed MHB early on, particularly interceptions. The MHB QB didn't appear to have a very strong arm and floated several passes that were subsequently intercepted.
2. The MHB running attack had some success in the first half with the option but the Hawks figured it out and controlled the MHB running game in the second half.
3. MHB has a quick defense that controlled Beaver and limited his yardage.

It appears the field this week will be clear but probably muddy and/or frozen. Wind at the Perk at this time of year is usually pretty strong and constant.

So, I would expect the Crusaders to stick to the run more than they did the first game. However, the
Warhawks controlled their running game in the second half of the first game. And they can focus on stopping the run since the MHB passing game didn't pose a significant threat in the first game.

Can the quickness of the Crusader defense stop Beaver on a sloppy field? I don't think so. I think the sloppy field neutralizes the Crusader speed. The Hawks have played on a sloppy field throughout the playoffs and the o-line should be able to open more holes for Beaver than he got in the first game.

Probably the biggest factor in favor of the Hawks in this game is the passing game. The Hawks have an efficient and effective one and MHB not so much.

Prediction: UWW 31, MHB 21

This was posted on all four boards of the remaining teams so Stone Station is just getting a jump on the invites.  Warhawks won't be counting any chickens before...........well ..............we all know how it goes!

I read this on the Daily Dose and thought it was a great overall assessment of the Hawks D this year.  Apparently it had been posted on the discussion board regarding centers and Gordon Mann moved it to the right link.  Hope Sanders doesn't mind my taking the liberty to post it here as well.

Gordon Says:

A post from "sanders" mistakenly put on the discussion about centers...

"Three points I would like to make. One; comparing Pynenburg and "The Big Red Barn" (Raebel), is like comparing apples to apples (and some very fine apples at that). Two; the real story behind the game will be the "other" Warhawks; linebackers Borzick, and Rindahl, an experienced and talented senior secondary, the D-line led by Ogrizovich, coach Borland's incredible work ethic, game preparation and his ability to keep his defense focused all four quarters. Three; are they better than past Warhawk defenses? I can't answer that, but what I can tell you is that these kids are hungry, hungry and greedy. They don't just want to stop opposing offenses, they want the ball, and they want to take it to the kitchen every down and every play, and with all due respect, there is little Wabash is going to be able to do about it."

I had a chance to talk to an NCAA offical and they are already posting rules for the upcoming weekend regarding "artifical noise makers". Here is what he said.
1) Cannon guy will be allowed in his usual spot but he will have to use smoke grenades and use a big sign that says "KABOOM" instead of the usual live fire.
2) The Warhawk band will have to use "air band methods" similar to any air guitar competion.
3) The PA announcer must be subsituted with students that are proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) strategically placed in the stands.
4) Fans will be not be allowed to stomp on the seats unless muffled by pillows.
All above are subject to change depending on how full the envelope is prior to the game.

Just back to Chicago from the Perk.....Thank God for a room at Super 8. Can't believe how we dominated every phase of the game. Cudos to the Oline especially. How about our QB from the West Coast....he can throw the ball in any weather. In the last 6 years that I have been going to games that was the worst weather. How about the cannon guy who moved his cannon on a hill outside the stadium because Wabash complained.....way to go cannon guy! Wabash is now in a category with Wesley both losers who couldn't play with the cannon......maybe if you didn't allow as many touchdowns it wouldn't bother you as much. Cudos also to the band who stayed the whole game and the tuba guys who put on a short concert in the mens washroom. Wabash's all-american is a solid player but he wouldn't start ahead of #33,#40,or #50......their #1 wide recever was also a very good player. Next week MHB which should be tougher this time.....need a solid effort again at QB and more turnovers......Pound the Rock......

Can someone "in the know" confirm this?  I know the cannon guy wasn't in his normal spot, but did someone from Wabash really comlain?  They seem like a group that is so into tradition that they would welcome another team's traditions as well.

I talked to Mike, the guy who mans the cannon, prior to the game, and he said, "Wabash isn't going to let me setup the cannon in the stadium." that's just what he told me about an hour before the game when he was walking around the parking lot.

That's crazy.  For the life of me I will never figure out what the big deal is to other teams about the cannon.

Over on the radio, Gary and Voice were first saying that the Cannon Guy wasn't set up, although they knew he was there because, as they put it, the Cannon Guy unlock the gate as the three of them entered the Perk in the morning.  They didn't know why he wasn't set up.  Then they heard the cannon go off.  I guess they saw the smoke first, then a couple seconds later heard the blast (hence, he was far away from his normal position).  A little later, they mentioned that he was up on the hill, as voice put it, in a more strategically located area on the high ground overlooking the field.  Apparently, his normal firing location was commandeered for snow removal or other emergency equipment that needed to be near the field.  Maybe voice can come on here to verify the accuracy of my statements.  During one of the firings, they must have opened the pressbox window because the sound could be clearly heard, I think just proving to the listening audience that the Cannon Guy, in fact was in the house.  They soon closed the window, for obvious reasons, and the blasts were not heard over the airways again.

a postscript....I suppose the on-field officials did a pretty good job this week because the only controversy seems to involved the Cannon Guy.  He is undoubtedly the most popular man in Whitewater on game days.

Having partaken of the Stone Station's gathering and having eaten Olinemom's brownies the past two years I highly recommend anyone making the trip stop by and enjoy.  They're very friendly people who really go all out with it.

However this week I'm only thinking about MHB.  I just don't think it's going to be as easy this time.

Absolutely Agree! To those who work extra hard for the next 2 weeks, the brownies will taste that much better. The end is near but the motto is the same: Just get better, everyday! ;)

Just wanted to offer belated congrats to the Warhawks and their fans for an impressive dispatching of my beloved Little Giants Saturday.   I enjoyed the banter, and the drive to the game.  The drive back was a bit dICEY, though. :)

I wish that the weather had been more conducive to Wabash's strengths (speed on both offense and defense) and that our guys had been healthy, for I would have loved to see how Wabash stacks up against the elite in ideal conditions.  Although a win, of course, would have been out of the cards, making the score respectable would have been good.  lol

Despite the weather (I shook 3 inches of snow off myself at halftime), I had a great time.

Your team is right there with Mount.  You will play them in Salem.  Please beat them.

Wabash Always Fights.

gobash,
WW may have won the football game but the tail gate trophy goes to all the Lil Giants backers in the P lot. Man when we pulled in and saw the big rig, flags a flyin and all the red I thought I was hallucinating (again)  ;D,. Hope all of you got home safe in the mess. Lil Giants need to be proud. The Elite 8 ain't bad in anybodys league.

Congratulations to UW-W on a great game, fantastic season and best wishes in the remainder of the tournament.  You were clearly not just the better team today, but one of the elite teams in the country.

Musings from Whitewater:
... great stadium, we should all have one like that ... it has to be a recruiting attraction
... very nice Whitewater fans ... and this was determined before the game when you could still get around without a snowplow ... tipped a few with them ... good people
... great Wabash gathering, geographically, generationally, administration, leadership, just plane Little Giant folks.  You come to expect/accept that ... but Saturday in the middle of lower Wisc. with weather predictions which then lived up to the prediction ... it was a tribute to the team and to Wabash
... the Warhawks were better, no question.  I just wished we could have played them under kinder weather conditions.
... Wabash is getting there and will get there.  Great seniors we lose.  Great Juniors, Sophs, Frosh we have.  We will reload and also refill.
... MUC may be good ... but Whitewater from what I saw (and difficult to really know in the conditions) will be there at the end and hopefully win.
... Like to play Whitewater again sometime soon ... but if we play there they must guarantee not to kill us ... fans and our team with snow, sleet, rain, cold, and everything else weather bad.
... AND ... University of Wisconsin at Whitewater ... nice place ... nice people ... very fine team.  Congratulations to you, and I believe I speak for every Little Giant I know ... for sure the ones who trekked to your home ... I hope you continue on and put it to the MUCers.
