BoBo: My feelings about having the cannon at the game have been over discussed here for two years. When we were at Mary Hardin Baylor last year they had two or three rows of students pounding on garbage cans when we had the ball.....did we complain and whine---No! If Mary Hardin Baylor complains and puts the cannon on the hill then they have achieved the same class as Wesley and Wabash. This will then call for a class "A" MonkeyStomping. Pound the Rock and send the whiners back to Belton....

I don't think anyone is going to complain about the cannon unless its the AA.  Of course I think the artificial noise maker rule is crap anyway.  I did complain about a cannon at a high school game once.  The home team (our cities high school) killed the visiting team 74-0.  The cannon going of as often as it did one block from the house was a bit annoying while I was watching tv, but at a game...fire away.

Sakman--

I don't think Cru fans have been whining about the cannon.  It was sarcastic banter saying that we don't want to hear the cannons because UWW scoring is a bad thing for the Cru.  I personally don't care if you have it or not, I just don't want to hear it because that could spell victory for the CRU.
YOU KNOW IT!!!!

The NCAA contacted UW-Whitewater early this week to say that super-dooper mufflers must be installed on the tractors that clear the snow from the field at Perkins Stadium during Saturday's NCAA Division III semifinal against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Following last Saturday's game vs. Wabash, the NCAA is concerned that the extra noise of the tractors may be distracting to the teams.    ??? :-\  Just kidding!! ;D

A UMHB fan - one -  mentioned that he was annoyed at the cannon because the CRU was losing. And he did say it was because UMHB was losing.  Any home field idiosyncrasies - i.e. obnoxious PA guy, etc... - will be annoying if you are losing.  An opponent's fight song can be grating if you are getting pounded.

That said, I would be surprised - and disappointed -  if you hear any complaining from the UMHB coaches or team. Nothing was mentioned by them after the first meeting in Wisconsin.

The home field provides advantages... and, in my mind, that is the way it should be. Visiting teams just have to come in, deal with them and try to overcome them.

My son's high school football team played three teams with cannons this year. I hardly noticed them. Well, with the exception of one. When the game was over and the other team had pulled out a close win, the cannon guy kept shooting it off over and over and over. I think he fired about 5 or 6 rounds in quick succession. I have to admit that got old pretty fast.

The more I listen to you guys talk about the possible condition of the field, the footing does become a concern (not an excuse). I don't think the mere fact that it is cold will be a factor, but treacherous footing will require some adjustments. If the field is a frozen tundra, the advantage is definitely to UWW.

UWW doesn't normally practice outside with this kind of weather; it really wouldn't get anything accomplished.  It's either the 120 degree WW field house or the Badgers indoor practice facility.

Why hasnt Schebler been kicking in the playoffs? You would think that an unanimous all-conference kicker would be doing his duties.... Just an observation :P

Injury and the fact that we haven't needed Schebler kicking in the playoffs.

He was cleared last game against Wabash, but because of the weather conditions it wasn't worth the risk of playing him. Plus we haven't really needed him lately, but we might see him on saturday though.

I received an email from WallyWabash who told me that he had done some digging and found out that Wabash had not complained about the cannon but an overzealous NCAA official wanted to demonstrate that he knew all the rules and put a stop to the cannon and Wabash's megaphones.....What a complete waste of time! What a ridiculous rule! I will now remove Wabash from the crybaby list where Wesley resides alone because they found the cannon demeaning to their team last year. This will end my participation in artificial noise discussion for 2007. Wabash supporters please accept my apology....Pound the Rock!!!!.....

Yeah -- it is SO sad when people follow the rules that are written. So damn sad.

At some point I hope people here accept the NCAA's rules on the subject. They have sole jurisdiction over their playoffs and I hope they continue to enforce their rules to the letter. Seriously.

Pat-
I can't speak for everyone on the issue, but I think the real issue on the noisemakers is the rule itself.  The rules should be enforced, but rules are not and should not be set in stone.  This rule is one that the NCAA should look into and possibly change or adjust.  Home field advantage is part of the game.  That being said, again, it is understandable that you would back the NCAA on enforcing the written rules--otherwise there would be chaos.  However, some rules do not accomplish what they were meant to accomplish.  (for example-last year's rule clock rule meant to "speed up the games" but only made a few minutes difference--no wonder that rule no longer exists)
