I've always thought that a playoff system would generate scads more money than the bowl system does.  It has to be about power.

Has anyone else noted the significant increase in sloppy play by virtually every team in bowl games?  That month+ layoff just totally gunks up teams that were smooth running machines in November.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

CruAlum39

I totally agree with you there sink and was actually about to post the same thing.

You have a team like KU who was first in the country in fewest penalties/yards (not sure which one) and their first four penalties are 15 yarders.

I've seen a few bowl games this year that I could barely stand to watch due to the sloppy play.

Hawaii was one of those instances.  Now don't get me wrong, Georgia was a much better team, but some of those Hawaii drives were horrid to watch.
YOU KNOW IT!!!!

D1 switching to a playoff systems is as much about the money as it is about the tv stations.  Are you telling me that ABC would want to give up the rose bowl and captial one bowl next year.  i do not think so.  i never thought that a time would that it would be overwhelmingly appearant that we need to switch to a playoff system until this year.  Who would disagree that USC is not the best team in the nation, how about Georgia, christ KU looked good last night.  Tough D won that game.  So whoever wins the title game will get a trophy and then the debate will wage on days to come.

Simple. Rotate the title game around the 4 networks. ABC 1 year, CBS the next etc. Those not getting the title game would get a sweet sixteen, elite 8 or final 4. One year the title game is the Orange Bowl, next year Rose Bowl ,etc.  Something like that. Everybody gets a peice of the pie. Love having the discussion as there is nothing else in college football to waste time about now that the Warhawks are the champions.  ;D

There is plenty of money to be made in a D-1 football play-off system for networks, schools and the NCAA.  Just look at the numbers that March Madness pulls in with regards to ad revenue alone for basketball.  I think most of the schools, except the top tier like USC or Ohio State, don't want to give up the prestige of a bowl game and really compete for the top spot.  They don't want to take the chance of ending up one of the teams that goes one and done.

I say throw the best 32 teams in and make it a tournament like the March Madness frenzy most of us enjoy.

Of course, that would just p-off all the sponsors of the individual bowl games, so we would have to call the NCAA title game, rather than the BCS National Championship, the:

Poinsettia/New Orleans/PapaJohns/New Mexico/Las Vegas/Hawaii/Motor City/Champs Sports/Texas/Emerald/Meineke Car Care/Liberty/Alamo/Independence/Armed Forces/Sun/Humanitarian/Music City/Insight/International/GMAC/Holiday/Chick-fil-A/Outback/Cotton/Gator/Capital One/Rose/Sugar/Fiesta/Orange Bowl Game.

Bulk..Decent point.  But I think we can expand upon this.  Lets be honest with ourselves I do not think any team past the top 25 has a snowball chance in hell of going all the way.  What makes March Madness fun?  Seeing teams from the lower seeds chase it all the way to the title game.  So for balance my proposition would be to see the top 16 into a playoff system and then still keep the lower bowls to be played on off playoffs game nights, and reward team that win between 7-9 games that year and are not in the top 16.

Now I will agree with taking the Orange, Rose, Fiesta, and Sugar Bowls and making then games within the playoff system.  Kind of like checkpoints for acheivement on the season.  Just my thoughts let me know what you think.

FBFan I would disagree, I think any respectable program winning a disputed national championship as this years will be, would say lets switch to a playoff system and we will still win it all.  One and done is no diffent than getting embarassed in a bowl game in my opinion.

Check out the Daily Dose. I pieced together some thoughts about the Orange Bowl and Stagg Bowl. I hope you find it entertaining.

Also made some comments about the atmosphere of the Orange Bowl and how it could be different if it were a playoff game.

Bowl Games - Win and go home! That just doesn't make sense.

With the 07 Christmas and New Year's season put to bed, I peruse several of my post patterns boards this morning, gave out appropriate +karma to my favorite posters, got overly excited to see that KMack has posted on two general football boards, depressed to see that myself and NO other guests are reading the WIAC board, actually read the WIAC BB board for the first time in my life.................I am suffering SERIOUS withdrawal here, fellas!!  Happy New Year to all and especially the 07 National Championship Warhawks.      Love how that sounds!!!

fan, I hear ya.  I feel like my life has lost a lot of purpose.  No game to go to, slim pickings on PP.

When will we see the names of recruits?  When will the 08 schedule come out?  Heck, when will the bookstore have some championship stuff?  I've got the Impact flyer, but that was like the first taste of the drug .... just leaves you wanting more.

My thoughts turn to the future - my son (HS soph) and I have for  the last 6 years made a summer baseball trip where we'll go to a major league city (ie-went to St L & KC in 2007) and hit several minor league games on the to and fro.  This year it looks like Pittsburgh.

I don't know how many more years he'll want to go on a trip like that with the old man.  If that does fall by the wayside here in a year or two, I'm thinking about taking a football season and going to a different D3 site each week of the season.  There's enough Wisconsin and northern Illinois spots in very reasonable driving distance - but I think I'd want to mix in a Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana and even Ohio game.  10 conferences in 10 weeks, that kind of thing.

It'd be hard to give up going to U-Dub-Dub though, especially if the program stays at the high level it's been at.  8 times this year, plus a jaunt to Lakeland.   ... Dreamer, silly little Dreamer ....

FAn, you are not alone in the withdrawal symptons.  Last night I watched all the youtube videos on the Warhawks' victory and anything to do with them.  Then I watched the videos from 2004 through 2007.  Sigh.  After the wildcat games where both the teams I wanted to win came up short, it was not such a good day!  How many days til the good, d3football, starts again.  Something that I really care about?  Ah, yes, it gets worse every year!!  Anybody for tiddlywinks?  Cribbage?  Carcassonne?  Guess BB will have to do until I get caught up in baseball, but I'll still be stopping by and giving +Karma   to those whose posts I sure do enjoy!!!
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!
