The most objective answer to that question would be to look at the NCAA end of season regional rankings where they balance team strength.

As you can see when my previous post we're probably closer to one another in our perceptions of how SJU would have done but I wouldn't use the NCAA's strength of schedule to substaniate it because it fails to take into account the strength of a conference.  So beating a .500 team from the MWC is the same as beating a .500 team from the WIAC.  Anyone who's watched any football in the two leagues knows that simply isn't the case.

I also heard the Leipold had an phone interview with Mankato. Whether it was Mankato who started the process or Leipold. it will be interesting to see what happens.
This is what happens when you win a national title in your first year as a head coach.

My sources indicate Coach Leipold aspirations are to climb the career ladder....

I've been taken to task regarding not being able to schedule non-conference games by WIAC teams, so I will back off since I will assume that the problem is not with the last minute scheduling. It just seems to come up at this time every year, so I wrongly assumed that this is when they "start" looking for games.

As far as strngth of conferences, I've thought for some time that the MIAC is underated. Although SJU has been the dominant team for many years, there are always two or three other teams who have been strong, tough opponents. St Thomas, and Gustavus quite a few years ago, Concordia for many years, and now Bethel, along with St Olaf coming on strong.

Back when the border battle was being played out every season with D2 MN schools, it was still hard for WIAC teams to schedule 2 nc teams.  With the loss of that several years ago, the conference is having even a harder time to fill out 3 nc games.  I wonder what it would do if there was a possibility for the WIAC to have games amongst themselves that act as nc games as if a true championship series.
1 plays 2
3 plays 4
5 plays 6
7 plays 8

This would alleviate one non conference game, save on travel costs especially if they had this series at Camp Randall, a neutral site, or home for the team that didnt host for the year, and almost guarantee a 10 game schedule for all.  I know this could possibly hurt the chances of getting 2 teams in the NCAA system, but it almost seems that it would be fun to really see the standings as true solid 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 instead of a 4 way tie or 3 way tie which we have grown a custom to.

Any thoughts?

This year would have been fun to see as it would match-up:
UWW vs. UWEC (different qb situation)
UWO vs. UWSP (up and coming team of future?)
UWL vs. UWS (huge last second comeback)
UWRF vs. UWP (more catches for the Frosh)

I was at the AFCA conference in Anaheim this past week.  My sources say UMHB wants to continue playing UWW and the decision to play is now in the hands of UWW.

I hope we could continue. I enjoyed watching MHB play up here as well as down there. We know when we go into battle against the Cru that it will take no less than a 4 quarter game to win and it's a great barometer for both teams. Only downfall is the expense of the trip.

So, Whitewater, I hear that your coach has applied at Mankato.  What do you think?

I think Coach Leipold did a great job leading a championship caliber team that he inherited to the championship. I think I need to see how he does at UWW over the next several years to be able to better judge his coaching ability, however. Can he maintain the program's success? Does he recruit well? Does he maintain/hire a competent coaching staff? How is he with alumni/booster relations? I would think that the administration of "higher" division schools would want to see the same things. Then again, maybe the allure of a national championship coach is just too tempting...

Why would anybody start this kind of stupid rumor now ? Mankato was a 5W-6L team last year. Please give me break. Only positive would be is that they wear purple.

I'd be incredibly surprised to learn the rumor was true.  First Lance is a WARHAWKGUY.  He always has been and there's a real sense of family in that.  He's home now.  I don't see him leaving after a single season.

Secondly I would question whether Mankato is, in fact, a step up on the career ladder simply because it is a D2 school.

I'm more inclined to think the "Whitewater coach" that was referred to is Stan Z though, admittedly, I don't know anything for a fact.  If it is Stan I wish him the best.

BTW, congrats to Coach L on being named the AFCA Coach of the Year.  It's no secret I thought he should have been WIAC COY as well.  When he wasn't I told him not to fret that he'd be named the national coach of the year instead.  Glad to see I was right about that.

Stoutguy just trying to start something up is my take. Must be bored and tired.

Why would anyone be suprised if Leipold went on to a different position, his history suggests that it will problay happen sooner than later.  Just because a guy like LK form MU doesn't want to coach at a higher level doesn't mean Leipold wont jump at the opportunity.  I beleive it would take a position that is a lot more attractive than Mankato to lure Lance, maybe the ATL Falcons might have an intrest. (Though that too is problably a step down on the career ladder) :)

Congrats to coach Leipold on winning coach of the year. The coolest part about the AFCA coach of the year is that it is voted on by Lance's peers other college coaches who attend, the AFCA convention.

You got part of it right.  I am bored and tired.  But I'll say it once more and then just let everyone blast me for starting an unfounded rumor.  Leipold applied for Mankato job.

janesvilleflash

Call me stupid, but I totally believe Stoutguy. If it is indeed true, it has to mean LL is not happy in WW, and will go as soon as he can. Could be many reasons he's not happy, including maybe his wife doesn't like it there. Whatever the reason, if I were in charge, I would be looking for a new coach, and fire LL as soon as I found one. Why keep a guy that wants out. I have been a LL fan since day one, and think he did a great job, but WTF.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Such a great topic to talk about.  I will keep my comments pretty much to myself at this point til there is legitimate proof of this rumor.  But if it is true, WOW.  Mankato St. is more than a step down.  I think there are some high school programs that are better, but once again that is just my opinion.
