Goerke Field upgrades to begin soon, as reported by the Stevens Point Journal:

http://www.stevenspointjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080611/SPJ0101/806110592/1657/SPJ01

The $1.1 million in renovations include a synthetic field turf, to be completed before the Pointers' home opener; expanded locker room facilities and 2,500 additional seats are on hold. Parking is still being addressed, as is a possible dome...

The Pointer Dome? Is it just me or are we in the middle of a WIAC arms race?

They could just build a 1940 county fair grandstand and call it a dome, right Linfield fans?   ;)

Goshdarnit, that was my line, JB.  You took the words right out of my mouth.   :D

Seriously, it sounds like several different WIAC facilities are going to look quite a bit different next season.  I've never been to Stout but I've heard the surface was hard.  As far as Point's dome is concerned I doubt the state will come up with the money for a domed facility but that's not to say they couldn't make it happen with private monies.   I have to admit that would be impressive.

All of this is good for the league.

I wonder how many millions of $'s it would take to construct a dome large enough to play a little football under?  What is the current seating capacity of Goerke Field?  I would think they could add many more than 2,500 additional seats if a dome was built.

Building a dome might really raise the bar to stratospheric or otherwise, unreachable proportions.  The venues might finally be catching up with the quality of the competition.  We might even see greater non-conference scheduling opportunities, tas well.

Goerke only has 2,400 seats now.  The smallest in the league I believe.  The grandstand really needs to be torn down, but there are a lot of the old guard who protect it for it's "historic" value.  There are about 15 more yards that you can go backwards toward Minnesota Avenue to make it taller.  It can certainly be extended length-wise as well.

Of all the improvements, the Field Turf is the most important.  With two high school teams and a college team, it's almost impossible to keep that field in any kind of shape.

Or just stretch a really big tarp over a frame, oh wait a minute, they did that, it's called the metrodome.

Bill,

I was at Goerke in 2004 and I thought at first it was a cow pasture with how high the grass was.  The place was in pretty bad shape so I'm glad it's getting a facelift.

You don't have to tell me.  It's a dump and has needed an overhaul for about 10 years.  Good to see the Schirel Corporation stepping up to the plate.  The next time I need a new set of tires, that's where I'm going.

rams in the country, for the 12th time overall. UW-Whitewater was the only Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) school to finish ahead of the Blugolds, taking sixth with 808 points. Six out of the nine WIAC institutions finished 27th or better in the Directors' Cup this season.

Two WIAC schools finish in the top 10 for the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup, based on the schools' athlethic accomplishments for the 2007-08 seasons.... UW Whitewater takes 6th, while UWEC places 10th. Williams College took fisrt....

Six of 9 WIAC schools place within the top 27 spots...
Piont at 13, UWL at 18, UW Oshkosh at 21 and Platteville at 27...

Congrats to all of the WIAC teams.  You did yourselves proud this year.  Imagine the possibilities when all the feilds and facilities get updated. The future is very bright.
Watch the SCIAC start slamming me and the WIAC.  I posted the link to the standings over there with a little nudge about the WIAC success. Something along the lines of who cares WIAC has poor academic standards, can't spell, blah, blah, blah. Go back a few months in the posts to right after the championship and read all of the yapping. OXY Bob exempt. Witty and wise.  Success has its detractors. Fully expect Pat to +k me for the congrats and  then -k me a few for waking up the well groomed pink poodles in their Vuitton carring bags.  ;) ;) ;)

Wait.....posters from another conference will fire back when you go on their board and give them a hard time?  Let me write that down so I'm not surprised the next time it happens.  Thanks Stealth!

WC 11 many +k's to all of the other conference posters. Seriously there are allot of conferences that put up some solid numbers. It takes a village to be in the top 10. Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Softball, Volleyball, T&F etc.  No disrespect to others. Some have other priorities. Lot's of many great success stories in the sports world. No hard times to them from us in Stealth land. Location undisclosed but far away from our great soil. The Directors Cup standings speak for themselves.

stealth, since I first saw this post yesterday, you have a net karma gain of 2...you must have some friends out there besides yours truly.  The next few days will be the true test, however - hope that the snipers don't get you too bad...but for some reason, I don't think you're too concerned about it.  ;)

BTW, my wife has a couple Louis Vuitton bags, but thankfully not used for carrying pink poodles (or any other colors, for that matter).
