There are three types of mathematicians, those who can count and those who can't.

I was originally going to post this as a "Wise A$$" dig (which would be a surprise for all) but decided to try and get some honest feedback.

Since the WIAC is traditionally believed to be the best conference top to bottom, what do you think about the present situation? The MIAC has five teams receiving votes in the d3football.com Poll, with SJU being the highest rated at #18, which hardly speaks for the quality at the top, but still................ The WIAC has two teams in the top 10, but that's it. Now, one takes the polls for what they're worth, and granted this seems to be a down year for the WIAC, but how does this strike everyone?
I agree with you, some weird stuff happening in the MIAC and the WIAC so far this season to get a good handle yet.  Consider last week, Carlton beat 07 play-off contender Bethel and the Johnnies lost to CM in a low scoring game 9-6 after beating them last year 52-21 and the WIAC Pick em's was so hard to predict that only 3 players got .500 or better.  The WIAC has one more week of non-conference play that may help shed a little light on where this conference stands with respect to others.  UWP plays an undefeated CCIW contender, UWSP plays AP after LAX did last week and UWW travels to the west coast to plays a NWC team.  Till I see these results, I am not ready to concede a down year in the WIAC yet.

Just some TWIB notes, or fodder for the day:

(Sorry, can't think of a suitable replacement at the moment for a word the "This Week In Baseball" lingo that works for football here)...

In UWEC's 28-6 win over Hope on Saturday, Cory Sartorelli rushed for all four TDs and 285 yards rushing. That's a ton, considering Marion Barber ran all over the Pack last night and had but 142 yards, half of what Sartorelli had... ;)

Sartorelli broke the school record for longest TD run from scrimmage, too, when he cut back for a 91-yarder late in the game...

The junior tailback's efforts at Carson Park place him in a tie for 13th all-time in the WIAC for most rushing yards gained in a game... At the top of the list is UWL's Andrew Mocadlo, with 391 yards against Stout in 2003.

Blugold Defense is looking good so far...

Actually janesvilleflash, there are a few more types of math, as exhibit A I submit the following Evolution of the simple Math Problem:

1950:
A lumberjack sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of this price. What is his profit?
1960 (traditional math):
A lumberjack sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of this price, or in other words $80. What is his profit?
1970 (new math):
A lumberjack exchanges a set L of lumber for a set M of money. The cardinality of set M is 100, and each element is worth $1. Make 100 dots representing the elements of set M. The set C is a subset of set M, of cardinality 80. What is the cardinality of the set P of profits, if P is the difference set MC?
1980 (equal opportunity math):
A lumberjack sells a truckload of wood for $100. His or her cost of production is $80, and his or her profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
1990 (outcome based education):
By cutting down beautiful forest trees, a lumberperson makes $20. What do you think of his way of making a living? In your group, discuss how the forest birds and squirrels feel, and write an essay about it.
1995 (entrepreneurial math):
By laying off 402 of its lumberjacks, a company improves its stock price from $80 to $100. How much capital gain per share does the CEO make by exercising his stock options at $80? Assume capital gains are no longer taxed, because this encourages investment.
1998 (motivational math):
A logging company exports its wood-finishing jobs to its Indonesian subsidiary and lays off the corresponding half of its US workers (the higher-paid half). It clear-cuts 95% of the forest, leaving the rest for the spotted owl, and lays off all its remaining US workers. It tells the workers that the spotted owl is responsible for the absence of fellable trees and lobbies Congress for exemption from the Endangered Species Act. Congress instead exempts the company from all federal regulation. What is the return on investment of the lobbying?

I was out of town and did not see the Falcon loss to Northwestern, but I read the account and listened to John O'Grady's audio session on the Falcon Football site. J.O. said he has a lot of respect for the NWC coach and what he's done with their program over the last 7-8 years. He said NWC has a lot of skilled players, and was especially complimentary about the qb, whom he called "a little Fran Tarkenton." He also was high on their best receiver, who, he said, was "an All American."

So what's my point? NWC is a good fb team. Should RF have beaten them? You can't fumble deep in your own territory and lose the ball on another fumble and hope to win against a good team. Even so, RF came within seconds of winning the game. The Falcons are very young, and played without Ryan Hansen, the tight end who caught 7 passes against SJU. He's out for at least two weeks with mono, as was another starter, Dylan Dabrowski.

That's one point. The other is that it's a bit early to give up on the Falcons. Sixth place is still a good bet, maybe even a bit higher.

One more thing. The CCIW seems to be feeling their oats this year. A couple of wins over supposedly better teams, Carthage has run up some impressive numbers. Do you think they will be ready next year, or soon thereafter, to schedule some non-con games against the WIAC (or the MIAC or IIAC for that matter)?

I, for one, am up for all comers, up to and including MUC and UWW!  Alas, I am hardly the arbiter of CCIW scheduling! ;D

And, of course, for non-con, there is no such thing as CCIW scheduling.  Each college has their own plans.  Since WIAC, MIAC, and IIAC are all West, while CCIW is North, there's also the in-region consideration.  By the 200-mile rule, anyone want to tackle exactly which possible pairings would be in-region?  (I know that still leaves a fair number, but it is hardly WIDE-open for teams seeking to keep pool C bids healthy.  And IWU and Millikin would be virtually left out of that picture.)

Pat Coleman

All CCIW-WIAC games are in-region because they are in the same NCAA administrative region.

Alas, I am neither a coach nor an AD, so I'm willing to take on anyone.  Though I kinda like IWU taking on MIAA foes - their game at Hope was my first game in 39 years; I hope Alma was a home-and-home and I may make another one!

Anybody paying attention to Oshkosh? Does their win over NAIA #2 Ohio Dominican give them any clout going into WIAC play?
