DBQ1965

Hey doolittledog ...

That was soooooo long ago ... but as I recall, I was paying around $3,000 a year for room, board and tuition at UD.  And I needed a National Defense Student Loan ... and a part-time job to make that happen.   I first lived in the old Steffens Hall (no longer standing) and then spent the rest of my years in Severance Hall, gradually working my way down from a small, 3rd floor room to a spacious, 1st floor corner room.

My first semester there I did custodial work at the old Goodyear store (down on the corner of White and Eighth, I think) ... then got on at WDBQ ("The Mighty 1490") as an announcer and dj ... even did a few UD football games.  I worked on UD's Buildings and Grounds crew summers ... doing maintenance and mowing on Chalmers Field (it always looked superb for the football opener).  One summer we cleared trees from the property just east of Chalmers Field where the two dorms stand.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

After reviewing the cost of BVU I found it to have drastically increased since I left these hallowed halls.  How does the rest of the conf stack up?  Is anyone higher than this.

I guess now I understand how I racked up so much debt for falling off barstools 5 nights a week.

My last year at BV, it was around 24K for tuition + room and board.  At the time I though thta was outragous.  Somehow they find a way to make the number seem much better than they are.  If I didnt have student loans to pay I think I could drive a Porche for the payments that I shell out each month.  But on the flip slide I could not have my job with out the college degree either.  I ended up working a tire shop in SL and the local nightclub establishment to pay for my drinking habits.  All in all it was a good experience tho.  Good people and good times.

I did a little checking a year ago and this is what I came up with at that time...

BV - 30,554
Central - 30,134
Coe - 32,990
Cornell - 33,250
Dubuque - 25,700
Loras - 29,730
Luther - 33,500
Simpson - 30,251
Wartburg - 31,285

Edit:  It would be interesting to see what tuition + room & board was for others on this board when they were in school.  While I was at UD it went from 7,800 up to 12,000.  But I was almost on the Sen. Blutarskey time plan for college...I took my time getting through school!!!  It would be fun to hear from DBQ1965 as to the costs at UD in the 1960's!!!

BOY.  Can you give me any insight into what happened to Kane Thompson.  Last I heard he was bound for UNI with high hopes of making the travel squad as a freshman.  Did not see him on the UNI roster, and looked at BV's and did not see him either.  Did he do the usual and quit after a season and put his drinking boots on.

Not sure what happened there.  I haven't seen Shea since this summer, but I remember he said something about the possibility of Kane transferring because of an issue with a coach.  Maybe he made a decision to quit before games started in order to save a year of eligibility.

What is Shea's deal now.  Grape vine said he was out at Nebraska as a strength coach.  If hes doing that, that is pretty cool.  Might be out of a job after loosing the head man tho.

It's a 2-year internship with the exercise science department.  Apparently Nebraska just hires interns instead of relying on GAs because they want a bigger time commitment than a GA could make.  He works mainly with the golf team, but everyone in the program helps with football, regardless of what their assigned sport is.  I guess it's a fairly prestigious program, and when he's done he'll be able to get a job just about anywhere or get into a lot of good grad programs if he goes that route.

Well thats very cool.  Good luck to him on that.  I would say any job would be possible after going through that program, especially if you can couple a masters degree with that as well.

Freddy managed to tear it up again today against the dolphins.

15 carries- 115 yds, 1 catch-6 yds.. 0 TD.. had a long run of 27 yds

doesn't appear that he's starting though because Lynch had 23 carries for 107 yds..

It will be interesting to see what happens with that situation.   Lynch was their 1st rd pick out of Cal
and believe it or not there's a lot of polictics in the NFL. (you'd think at that level there wouldn't be ,but there is)
so no matter what Fred does, he might have a hard time becoming the starter.
Either way, he's doing a nice job of making the most of his opportunites when he gets them.
in 2 games he's avg 130 yds of offense

Unbelievable.  This is all that DM Reg. online had regarding the Aztec Bowl.  This was a small blurb after the ISU football awards.
We had three playgers that I know about playing in that game.  Sherden made an impact with rushing, Pierece made 4 tackles, the kids from Central recovered a fumble.  What about Jackson BEING THE MVP.

It makes me sick that we have the IIAC and all that the conference has to offer, and the flagship paper of the state gives the conference little or no converage.

I did not even see anything regarding all the kids who made all region team.  Not even a small note in the Iowa scene.  Its not like these kids are coming from FL, CA, and TX and making the all region team.  These are kids that  grew up in the state, go to college in the state, and may or may not make their life in the state.

Anyways, this is me standing on my soap box and for appologize for that.  I just get so sick of regarding garbage on the register.

I think that Fred will be happy with his playing time, but I bet he makes more than minimum next year.

Great Job Freddy, now I have a reason to watch the NFL again.

I registered as a Bills Backer last week.

Go Kohawks.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I agree wholeheartedly. The IIAC is at least 80% Iowa players no matter the sport. You'd think the Register and the Des Moines TV stations would give more coverage. The TV stations cover the Central Simpson game and that's about it. This last season we had three (depending on the poll) teams nationally ranked with Central in the top ten all year. You'd be hard pressed to find that out from the mainstream media in central Iowa. From what I've seen, there is better coverage in the Cedar Rapids area. At least someone called in to Sound Off last night and called our Guy's performance in the Aztek Bowl. I didn't know about Jackson's MVP until I logged on here. How can the IIAC get the coverage it deserves?

Oh by the way...the weather out there in Iowa is insane!

I look at home prices every time I travel out there "just to look".  And I think to myself, the folks are nice, there's no crowds, nice quiet pace of life in general...but that's in the early Fall.  The Winter hits like a "Bayonne Bleeder" Chuck Wepner below-the-belt special.

So what if selling my modest shack in Socal would net me a palacial mansion in the cornfields...it would be in freaking snow and ice right now!

We have a place for the snow out here and we can visit it when we want to on weekends in the mountains.  Of course I have to fight traffic to get there.

I think that part of the problem is that D3 fans aren't being very vocal about wanting to see the coverage -- it's the law of supply and demand. I'm sure that if people demand more coverage it will materialize.

Does anyone remember when the Register had "The Big Peach"? The Register was a lot better about providing small school stories back in the day -- I remember the days when they sent a cub reporter to the majority of the games... but now I am dating myself. I wonder why they got away from that....

A little off-topic here, but does anyone in NE Iowa watch KWWL News? If so, is Mark Woodley still one of the sports guys?

footballdaddy

It was a sad day when the Register ended the Peach. I think back then they had a section to fill so a lot more stories were written about the Iowa Conference and such. Now it's a lot easier to fill pages with wire service stories and not keep so many reporters on hand who need to find something to write stories about. It may be that they are too busy trying to make Des Moines a hockey town to find time to write about Iowans doing things in Iowa.

I think Fred has made his mark in the NFL as a player.  He has value as a special teamer and as a solid backup RB and with alot of teams having success with the RB by Committee (Dallas, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Carolina, and New Orleans) I think the Bills will have a spot for him on the roster next year, maybe as the #2 back.
Go Norse!!!
