Purple Heys

I was out of touch because I have been busy at work and at home...basketball just started up and I'm coaching Heys Rev 3.0 and daughter Heys is playing her senior year of HS, so we are all over the county watching games.

I tried to keep an eye on the D3 playoffs...sure would have liked to see Central try to climb the Mount.  YOUR great Iowa weather is to blame IMHO, snuffing out the Central passing attack, making them have to go 1 dimensional.  That's the trouble with outdoor football, or anywhere but California football; the weather can become THE factor.

Still, Bethel had to go and win it...not like the Dutch just folded up the tents.

I didn't see Bethel matching up with MUC as well as the Dutch might have IF the weather weren't otherwise a factor.  MUC's run defense plays directly to Bethel's strength...factor in early turnovers and blowout ensues.

P.S.
I'd like to think that my spending so much time in Iowa this past season had a positive effect on YOUR weather.

I'm kind of feeling like Burt Lancaster in The Rainmaker where he got those hayseeds...errr...fine people to part with their money for the promise of a little rain.

Attention all Dutch fans!  I would be willing to bring some nice weather with me to your next regional final appearance.  For a small fee* I would be happy to oblige.  All IIAC fans, this offer is extended to you as well.

Small fee* = $33,250 USD per visit

I don't know if the Governator could do the job on our gov. Ours was a tight end at Virginia Tech who had to block Bruce Smith every day.

That would be equal to the average monthly house payment for your typical SoCal 800sf ranch style home with no basement and 1 car carport!!!

It was a sad day when the Register ended the Peach. I think back then they had a section to fill so a lot more stories were written about the Iowa Conference and such. Now it's a lot easier to fill pages with wire service stories and not keep so many reporters on hand who need to find something to write stories about. It may be that they are too busy trying to make Des Moines a hockey town to find time to write about Iowans doing things in Iowa.

The Register is bad when it comes to giving IIAC coverage.  Central gets more press than any other school by a landslide, and even they don't get much.  Nothing against Drake football, but everyone knows they are a glorified D3 program, yet they still get way more coverage than the IIAC.  In the pre-season they get a full page preview spread.  No one in DSM really cares about Drake football...so why so much coverage as compared to the IIAC?  Anyone have any insights?  Anyone think a IIAC team will ever try to schedule Drake?

I agree about the IIAC lacking coverage. I don't know where it stems from but I've heard the Register isn't a big fan of Central College in general. Don't know why but that was something I heard a few times on campus. I'm sure the editors just don't feel the numbers are out there for much love for the IIAC, even UNI gets snubbed a little I think. Well, before they were the only "big four" school still playing.

Drake football is hard for me to even acknowledge and I live in Des Moines. KXNO talks quite a bit about Drake and I really have no interest. The Pioneer league has never impressed me and I would be curious to see an IIAC team go up against the Bulldogs.

I miss college football already...the season always goes too fast

Good story on Fox news tonight about Fred Jackson. Some good highlight film on him. Also interviewed  Mr. Jackson

DF1, is that the same Mark Woodley from Dike?  I knew him from when i went to school there in like 4th grade, I didn't know he was ever @ KWWL.

As far as KWWL, Rick Coleman is a good dude and has been there forever.  Burmeister (sp) worked his way up nicely from being at KWWL to a head anchor sometimes for NFL Network.
I want to say he was @ KWWL as late as 99 when he actually covered  a few of the WB games

as much time as you people post during the season, I know you'll have 7 minutes to burn to watch this John Madden impersonation from Frank Caliendo.  This guy is awesome, he also does Jim Rome pretty well.

Purple, for what it's worth in regards to your friend's kid.  I'm not saying he's not a good player since i've never seen him play, but the gaudy numbers in the gym don't always translate to being a good "football" player on the field.  I've seen some guys at UNI & WB who were all americans  in the weight room but herbs on the field.  Same for track, there's been a lot of  fast "track" guys that were awful football players.  that's unfortunate he hasn't been healthy.

if he can take up space and has good leverage, i'm sure he will get a free agent contract from someone. it's not like there are many people that size and that strong just walking down the street.   but as the saying goes, "you can't make the club if you're sitting in the tub"

purple,
I just re-read your post on that kid.  His size and speed are almost  identical to what Kampman was coming out of Iowa (this kid is quite a bit stronger) and Kampman  didn't get invited to the combine(300 or so do) but did get drafted in 6th or 7th round I believe because GB loved his speed.

He made the most of his opportunity when he got his first playing time  4-5 years ago and now he's making close to $4mil/yr and has led the NFL in sacks since 2006 -

One  another 2A guy from IA that is a stud DE is Vanden Bosch for TN.. wasn't healthy first 3-4 yrs w/AZ but now that he is, he makes tackles look really bad...

He could learn a lot from the Iowa boys

I think you are spot on about this...I believe he will, at least, get multiple camp invites.  But he may very well impress those he needs to impress when they do their Pro Day.  That could get him drafted in the late rounds.  Before he was injured (again) he was hearing projections of 3rd or 4th round, worst case 5th round.  His first Line coach moved on since his sophomore year and he is now coaching in the NFL for the Raiders.  These are the kinds of contacts that pay off later on.

Given the injury history its anybody's guess...to the point where he applied for the medical redshirt year and may return to the Bruins, depending on the new HC.
Vanden Bosch is a great example of the injury thing running its course and Kampman is one of those guys where the right contacts paid off impressing the right guy at the time he was looking.

DF1 - Mark Woodley is NOT with  KWWL any longer. Other than Rick Coleman they gone through a lot of staff in the sports department lately.

I do remember the Big Peach - even when it was in the weekday paper not just Sundays. (Yes I'm old) The paper "Iowa Depends On" really went down in quality when it closed all of it's bureaus in towns around the state and a lot of them were in Ia conf. towns.

The paper Iowa depends is a joke and I agree with you totally AEN.  Its like someone posted earlier its easier to take wire stories than to pay people to hit the streets.  There is one guy who does a great job with HS wrestling and that is Dan McCool.  That guy is all over and always chasing the best HS wrestling in the state.

One of the issues I see is that we have complete idiots like Sean Keeler who take a phone interview with Drew Tate and make it 3 days worth of news spinning it three differnt ways.  I bleed black and gold and in 2002 when IA won the Big Ten and got invitied to the Orange Bowl the Registered cried foul because they did not go to the Rose Bowl.  They are compleltey ignorant.  They just made a major bowl game for the fist time since the early 90's and won the Big Ten and you are crying foul.  I did write a letter in disgust to them regarding that.

The One...Great idea on writing a letter that is tacful and nice.  I will do this.  I will point out a few things.  Once I can give karma I will reward you for that.

Are you skipping work today Doolittle?

Yes and no.  I now have a home office, so I am getting some work done.  But the inspection I had scheduled this morning has been put on hold due to the weather.  And every hour or so I am going outside to scrape some more ice off our sidewalk and deck...if this ice doesn't quickly turn to snow this storm might end up worse than the one from last year that knocked out our power out here for about 2 weeks.

And a good thing about having a home office is that your wife can bring you cookies that she is baking!!!

And our Governator can kick your governor's a$$.  He's part bionicle you know...

I would like to think our former governor could give Cali's governor a run for his money.  They did work pretty well together against that "Predator" creature.  But Gov. Ben Richards had his hands full with Gov. Captain Freedom in that crazy game show hosted by Richard Dawson himself.
