sportsknight - I think you mean Puff's, not Duffy's.  And the all-night breakfast place was called The Pantry...seemed like they always had the best food, of course it could have something to do with the time of day and condition that you're in at the time. ::)
The Pantry...that's right.  That place was a good time.  I'm not at all surprised I was wrong on Puff's.  The time I went there I was already pretty "full" by the time we left the BVU campus.

Happy New Year to all you IIAC-ers.

We plan on a quiet celebration ... afternoon movie of "The Kite Runner" ... home for dinner with my chili (complete with jalapenos and cilantro ... a nice balance) and cornbread ... and not on the roads this evening so we don't get run into or over by some crazy.

My wife and I have a 17 year old New Year's Day tradition of breakfast downtown at the Amway Grand Plaza with a table overlooking the Grand River ... Bloody Marys and Eggs Benedict.  This year we will be joined by our daughter and 6-year old grandson.

And of course ... there is the saturation of TV bowl games.

What are the rest of you up to?

Best wishes to all for 2008.  May your teams win all their games except when they play the Spartans!

Peace ...
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Happy almost New Year to everyone.

DBQ1965, looks like you have a pretty good couple of days planned.  We will be at my in-laws chasing kids around.  We might actually be awake at mid-night to celebrate but I am not holding my breath.  Bloody Mary's sound excellent.  We should have Bloody Mary's but will probably settle for scrambled eggs and toast the next morning.  I don't think my mother-in-law would want to go to the trouble of eggs benedict!!!

Hopefully I get to see some college football on New Years Day.  My in-laws are not big sports fans.  Any time yesterday while we were over there that I put a game on my father-in-law would grab the remote and flip over to Pax or PBS...or turn it off so he could read.   :( :( :(

Dog..I can feel your pain.  I married a soccer player and a soccer crazy family.  You say football in that house and they turn to Fox Sports Euro and ask is this what you meant with a smile on their face.  So if it isnt soccer its the ABC family channel for some watered down drama fest of trials and tribulations of some fake family.  For my own sanity we will not be joining them this year for new years:)

Happy New Year to all and I hope 2008 brings all success in whatever lifes ventures you lead.

It was a great season over all for everyone.  Central did a great job representing in the playoffs, hopefully we can have more in there next year.  Plus the Iowa Conference is getting some recognition on a national level with Freddie in Buffalo, things are definitely on the way up.

Sounds like everyone has some pretty good new years plans.  I have a half day of work today and tomorrow off (thanks to the new job I don't have to work holidays anymore).  I love to start a new years tradition like DBQ1965 has.  This year I will probably keep it on a lower level (downtown La Crosse and the bar tabs made an early financial dent on me last year).  Ring in the new year with friends at a house party then spend some of New Years Day moving into my new house.  I finally took the jump and am officially a home owner as of last Friday.  Maybe I will have to get myself one of those "lucky lawnmowers" to avoid another Augsburg meltdown like last season.

Here's a toast and wishing all a Happy New Year in 2008!

My New Year's plans are the same every year...I throw a house party with a bunch of my closest friends where we do a beer exchange and have many cocktails, Bloody Mary's included, champagne toast at Midnight and usually a trip to one of the many local establishments within walking distance, go to lunch New Year's day and enjoy some college football while re-hashing the previous nights events.  Its always a great time.

A toast to all of the IIAC-ers...

May your glass be ever full,
May the roof over your head be always strong,
And may you be in heaven
Half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Happy New Year!!!!

Alright guys we are getting closer and closer to signing day and the full court press is on especially for the IIAC schools.  Does anyone have any insight into where the top players are going, and if we will see any of these land in the IIAC?

When we were seated at a table and our drinks were delivered we noticed a severe tilt in the table.  So severe in fact that liquid was flowing out of our tumblers.  I mentioned something to the waitress and antiscipated we would be moved.  Instead they just asked us to back up and they rotated the table 180 degrees.  Then it was perfectly flat.  Apparently over the years the building settled but instead of repairing the floor they would just cut the legs of tables to have flat surfaces.  I loved it.

Sounds pretty typical of Breitbach's.  Christmas night they had a story about the fire on one of the CR TV stations and a sound bite from Mike Breitbach that went something along the lines of "We're going to rebuild eventually.  I haven't really run the idea past my wife yet, but I'm sure I can talk her into it."

That said, what are some other favorite places to eat or watering holes that IIAC fans are known to frequent?  Here'd be my list:
Storm Lake:  Mullarky's or Duffy's for drinks and this all-night breakfast place that I can't remember the name of for a stomach-settler on the way home.
Pella:  Dutch letters seem to be a favorite
Cedar Rapids:  Depending on where you're coming from/going to, there are plenty of options.  Gringo's down by the Cell Center is a good one.
Mount Vernon:  If you have the time, driving over to Solon for a Jonesy's tenderloin is usually worth the trip.
Dubuque:  Way too many places to name...The Shot Tower's pizza is damned good, Lot 1 and Bartini's are some good downtown bars, Bricktown has some nice food.  But for a real treat, navigate your way to the Moracco.
Decorah:  One word - Mabe's.
Indianola:  Two words - Des Moines
Waverly:  Joe's, the OP, and the Goat are good options for both food and drink right near campus.

I haven't hung out in every town, but there are a few memorable stops....

Waveryly is home to the OP and Joe's Knight Hawk (although I wouldn't recommend wearing red in there after a game....)
Decorah -- Mabe's is great!
Dubuque -- we always skipped Dubuque and went further west to the Knight Light Supper Club (Dyersville, maybe?)
Pella -- the best place to eat after the game was George's Pizza, just a little off the square.
Cedar Rapids has several good options....

I haven't ever stayed in Storm Lake long enough to hang out. Indianola is close enough to both Pella (in college) and Des Moines (now) that I have never bothered stopping after the games. It looks like I have some investigating to do.....

Here are my stops though the IIAC and might I add it was with friends who attended the college and I did not see a whole lot of the town.

Simpson: two words Des Moines
Luther: Americana and Roscoes (Combat Juice)
Cornell: havent done it
Wavery: Joes and the Fainting Goat
Loras and Dubuque: The Round Table diner outside of Dyersville was my closest memory.  Wow did they have a hell of a family style dinner.
Storm Lake: Mtown and Brewsters
Central: Pizza Ranch was the most happening spot in town.

All towns I visited tho were fun in their own ways.

Yep the Knight Light is just east of Dyersville.  Good to hear that there were Central fans at a place called the Knight Light ;D

My folks and I used to head up to the KL a couple times a year, but in the last 2-3 years they changed management and the food has gone downhill.  That and all the good new places in Dubuque don't give much reason to head out to Dyersville.  F that town anyway (says the Cascade alum)!
