I would LOVE to see Central schedule Linfield in the preseason. They don't have a full conference schedule and are always looking for opponents.

That's a long way to go for a scrimmage. Perhaps it would be better to play a non-conference game. Those games, you see, are actually part of the season, therefore they are not preseason games.
The trips to Europe amount to a preseason game, or scrimmage, or cultural/educational experience. One might counter that a trip to the West Coast offers the same thing, only less expensive.

Thunderbolt ...

Except that when UD played in Germany a few years ago ... that win didn't count in their record.  But in 2008 ... even though they are likely not to be in the hunt for the IIAC title or a playoff spot ... the outcome of their game with Redlands will count on their record.

For everyone
... on another matter.  On the North Region post, there was reference to single-wing football.  Since I played single-wing (wing back) in the late 50's, I wondered if any of the rest of you played with or against any single-wing in your football careers?  Any stories?

Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

There again, is the difference between a scrimmage and a non-conference game. I was a spin-back for one year in high school. That coach moved on and the next coach put in the wish bone. My preference was the wish bone. Although you still get hit on every play, at least your not turning your back to the line of scrimmage.
We were not a very good team, this brings back a lot of painful memories.

I have decided to get excited about Central's non-conference, opponents afterall.  Since who knows how good The Dutch will be this year after losing so many of last year's stars, this may not have been the year to take a trip to Oregon or any place traditionally more challenging.  Now that I have visited both web sites, I see the Lakeland Muskies have a cool mascot and Albion has a marching band, two of my favorite things about college football.

After celebrating the wife's birthday tomorrow, we're going to Waverly on Sunday for the football banquet. Is anyone else having theirs so late, or is this normal? I guess I'm used to having one right after the end of the season. I suppose you need some time for all of the post season honors.

And +k to df2004 we both need some karma help!

Lakeland always seems to be at or near the top of their conference. I don't have any idea what they are returning. I do know they have a habbit of scheduling tough non - conference teams. Thats probably a good opener for the Dutch.

And, you have to love a team with a fish mascot. Even though, the Chinooks or the Lake Trout would probably be more appropriate for Sheboygan.

In 2003 and 2004 the banquet was in January due to being in the playoff and they (coachs) must of like it cause the last two were also in January. Not sure if its has anything to due with the Holiday break or not

I'd assume it does.  You don't want to schedule it too early, in case you make a run in the postseason.  After you leave enough time after the season, you'd start running into finals, then the holiday break.

the wing t-
that offense reminds me a little bit of shriners riding their bikes in circles and doing figure 8's...

if my memory serves correctly from football theory, didn't the U of Delaware start it?

I only played against it once in high school(MFL-Marmac) tried running it.  They were one of the worst teams we ever played  but they did manage to hit us for a few big plays.

does Sigourney still run it?  They are the only team in IA who I can think of that is actually good and runs it.  I know 3-4 guys my age that went to Sigourney and they were all good athletes and played on their championship team from the mid 90's.

I tend to think teams run it because they have less talent and maybe small lineman?

That or they run it because their QB had nothing to throw to on the outside or he has a glass arm.

Doesnt Augustana out of IL run this type of offense?

Glad to see The Dutch schedule up, gives us a little FB in a boring month.

As far as the single wing goes, I've seen Sigourney-Keota run it in the playoffs a couple times.  Wasn't Hammes a spinback for them?  Some other teams may run it due to lack of talent or a coach just trying to be different, but I think S-K teams generally can go toe to toe with most anybody.

Their coach (Bob Howard) has moved on to Webster city I think, but I've heard SK is still running it, I'd think Webster City would  be running it too.

Old Dutch

A little research on the Dutch opponents:  Lakeland will be  a tough opener for an inexperienced team, 7-4 record, 2nd to Concordia in Illini Badger conference.  That's a weak conference, but the Muskies have some studs coming back, a LB who led the conference in tackles and three other all conference players.  The IBFC web page is a little weak on stats so that all I can find. They did play two WIAC teams in '07, including Whitewater, both pretty big loses. I think this and Wartburg makes the Dutch first two games very tough.

Albion was 2-8 in the MIAA, another weak conference.  92 on the 07 roster with 42 Freshmen, sounds like a program with a little problem perhaps???  33 conference titles but none lately.  Got a stud RB, Baracella, all conference 5.6 yds per coming back.  The rest of their stats are middle of the pack, doesn't look like one of those challenging teams I wish our guys would line up with.

Congrats to DBQ for landing a game with Redlands, that will be good for the IIAC and their program, if their young guys are up to the challenge - go luck to them.

With the season going so late this year out banquet is the 27 of this month.  The were to have this Sunday but there were already events planned this weekend and next from what I understand.  This helps "extend" the season a little for the seniors.  Footballdaddy +k back at you.
