Concerts:

The Boss "Born in the USA" tour at the Fabulous Forum in LA   3.5 hours seemingly non stop

When I was 16, Robin Trower, Rush "2112 Tour" and Alice Cooper at the Orange Show in San Berdoo...my first concert.  Rush blew me away with Geddy Lee's vocals and Neal Peart on drums.  1975

George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers at Campbell Hall on UCSB's campus.  A lecture hall by day.  800 people packed in for 3+ hours.  Raw. 1979

One for the books:  A burnt out Robby Kreiger at the FUBAR in Santa Barbara with his with a keyboardist, drum and bass.   A shack of a bar with the former Doors guitarist ekeing out the remnants of his fame.  Very cool though with the "Lizard King" tales that prefaced the songs.  1978

Not that Alex Lifeson is any slouch, when talking about Rush...but I would be remiss.

Heys,

Better three man band, Rush or Triumph?

Oh and that was a typo in my earlier post, Faith No More and Guns n' Roses were with Metallica.

signed,
Cream

Rush.  To my ears, not even close.  Both Canadian too...

Not that Triumph is bad or anything...Rush is that much better to me.

More concert notes.

The Mellow Years.

Jackson Browne at the Arlington Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara.  Great setting, great seats, great acoustics.  A classic venue.  If you come to SoCal and don't go to San Diego, make sure you go to Santa Barbara in the Summer.

Neil Diamond.  For my wife.  She smiled for weeks.  Sweet Caroline was fun...good times never felt so good, so good, so good!    ;D

Harry Connick Junior at the Irvine Meadows.  Outdoors on the grass on a Summer Night.  Outstanding.

Jimmy Buffett and then the Eagles on the Hell Freezes over tour.  I am pretty sure I saw the guy wires that kept Joe Walsh standing.  Also on the grass at Irvine Meadows.  No Doolittle, ON the grass; not On Grass.   8)

Worst experience:
18 years old and we went to see the Doobie Bros. at the Fabulous Forum.  It was after a HS Basketball game so we jammed out to LA in about 55 minutes...a 70 mile drive!  I was living out in Redlands at the time.

Older sister kept buying us beer.   Pablo Cruise opened...I woke up to the Bros. singing China Grove at the 2nd encore.  I heard 1/2 a song?!?   :D

Brush with Greatness:  The guy that played Mark "The Rat" Ratner from Fast Times in Ridgemont High sat in front of me at the Springsteen concert.  He smoked pot all concert.

He didn't Bogart it, did he?

The concert where I realised I was getting old.  Pearl Jam at Alpine Valley in '98.  It occurred to me that night that it might be a good idea if I stayed out of the mosh pit.  I stood just outside of it.  A friend of mine broke his toe while in there.  We also spent a day before and after that concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee.  Shows that we saw there but I can't say that I will spell their names right were Gene loves jezebel (on the vh1 stage and there weren't 10 people in the crowd), KC and the Sunshine band, Brother Kane, and a couple of local bands that were actually pretty good - Framing Amy and The Gufs.  A LOT of Leinies were consumed that week.

I met my wife a week after that trip.  Concerts I have been to since meeting my wife you ask???  The Cedar Rapids symphony christmas concert twice and The Wiggles three times... ::)

Priceless!  Although, in a couple years I see myself in the exact same boat.  I just hope something better than The Wiggles comes along!!!

I saw the greatest concert I will probably ever see in Kansas City this last fall.  Garth Brooks, IMO, is the single greatest entertainer of this generation.  The energy and the passion that he puts into his shows is incredible.  I always wanted to see him as a kid, but we didn't have the money as a family to get tickets.  When I finally started making my own money, he up and retires.  I never thought that I would get the chance to see him at that point.  I know it sounds silly, but that is one thing that I would have regretted forever if I had not seen one of his concerts live.  Usually, when you wait that long to do/see something, it doesn't live up to your expectations.  He got to them and beyond.  The thing I love about Garth is that you don't have to be a country fan to like his music.

Others of Note:
John Cougar Mellencamp - Cedar Rapids 2007
Tim McGraw - Ames 2002
Blues Traveler and Wallflowers - Ames 1998???
Brooks and Dunn - state fair 2000
Brad Paisley and Rascall Flatts - Cedar Rapids 2002

K-Mack,

I want to respond to you first.  Coe football under Raeburn has forced the recent conversation about conference power to change from the "top two" to the "top three" (Central, Wartburg and Coe).  There is little more that he could have done at Coe besides go deeper into the playoffs.

Now, that being said, I firmly believe that until Coe makes a committment to improving their facilities to keep up with the rest of the conference and the country, it is going to be hard for them to continue to retain their top coaches.  Improvements have been made recently (field turf, basketball renovations, baseball field) but they are not close in regards to extra immenities facilities-wise.

I am sure the money is an upgrade and the prestige is a small upgrade as well.  The anual "is he going to leave?" question is something that I will not miss, even if it wasn't a reality.  But, as a football mind, Coe is losing a pretty solid coach.

In comparing the two schools, Wabash gets the nod in almost every category.  And, like most things, it all starts with money.  Wabash's endowment is $367,683,478.  Compare that to Coe with has an endowment of $76,803,235 and the numbers are staggering.  Wabash is listed as the #52 liberal arts college in the country compared to Coe which is #106 according to USNews and World Report.  One thing that is an easy transition for Raeburn as a recruiter is that he will be recruiting the same kind of kid.  Academic profiles of Wabash students and Coe students are pretty simliar.  Both schools require smart, well-rounded kids that are also gifted athletically.

Finally, the community and school support for athletics is something that Coe struggles with.  Being in Cedar Rapids, they are not always embraced by the communty and students seem to prefer go to the Iowa games than Coe games.  This is a shame, but it is also a reality.  A new coach should bring at least a sense to renewed excitement to the campus and surrounding area.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask.  I always love talking about football, the IIAC and Coe College.

That's pretty helpful, especially to help contrast with the impression I got of the school when I was there.

K-Mack,
Just for clarification, this was helpful in contrasting the impression given from which school?  Coe or Wabash?  Just wondering.

The Wiggles three times... ::)

I have only seen them once, in Ames.  Have you seen them since Greg stepped down.  I love to shake my hips with Wags the dog.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I have to be totally honest...never heard of Triumph, but that just means I will have to look into it now if people are putting them up there with Rush.  I still think it might be impossible to find a group better than Rush.  Alex Lifeson is by far one of the best guitar players out there...just listen to YYZ.  However, know one knows him because of Neil.

As for worst concerts...not really a concert, but Bill Engvall when he came to Wartburg.  Luckily I got to see it for free thanks to my employment with Alfred E.  But if you had seen both blue collar comedy tour DVDs you had seen his whole show.  I did get to meet him quickly back stage though and have an autographed poster from him.  Jeff Dunham is coming to the La Crosse Center in June and I just hope that he has some fresh new material or I will be very upset at spending the $40 bucks (plus extra for those expensive beers).

Again, another reason I don't mind being single.  Although, I will admit I had the opportunity to see Disney on Ice a few years ago (thanks again to free tickets with the media) and I went with my ex and her younger cousins (toddler age).  I think I might have enjoyed the show more than they did.  It was themed around Tarzan and the Jungle Book...the acrobatics were AMAZING especially since it was on ice.

We saw them in Ames in April of '06 I think it was.  Was that thw show you were at???  I think Greg stopped touring shortly after that.  My wife and I have wondered what our kids would think with Sam as the lead singer.

Speaking of shaking your hips with Wags the Dog...here is a clip for those that don't know the Wiggles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iXPUlLu4o4  When our girls were a bit younger and we wanted them to get sleepy we would put wiggles dvd's in and they would dance until they got tired...worked every time.

On a side note.  Luther has video available now for basketball games.  Is the IIAC thinking of adding this league wide or are they leaving it up to each individual school???

I have to say....seeing you guys talk about Wiggles (and now Disney on Ice) is highly entertaining to me! Pardon my ignorance, but I don't even know who the Wiggles are, although I can guess based on the context....
