Now you've done it Dutchie!!!

And I thought we all came to an agreement that it was impossible to recruit CIML kids to IIAC schools  ;D

Well I would not be surprised if they did get some good kids from SEP.  Jake Viggars the central FG/EP kicker did a great job as a freshman and maybe he has said some things to his friends from SEP.

Don't get me wrong, Dutchie.  I'd be the first one to tell you what Yordi did was wrong (well, the second according to his attorney).  It was wrong, but not criminal.  The letter of the law is that he had to expect a violent reaction to what he said.  If he yells stuff at people out his dorm room all the time and nobody ever does anything, why would he expect anything different this time around?

SK, in a lot of ways, I agree with you. However, I don't think his best defense is that he "yells stuff at people all the time and nobody ever does anything" -- seems to set up a pattern of abuse, huh?

Wasn't it about 10 years ago that the Matthew Shepard thing happened? His case first brought about the term "hate crime" -- this stuff starts innocently enough, and continues and escalates when no one says anything about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepard

Obviously, I don't think Yordi would ever probably take it that far... at least I hope not. But I don't think it's being blown out of proportion.

Dutchie I think and correct me if I am wrong but the Matthew Shepard case was proven to be a crime of opportunity.  I am not entirely clear on this but I thought that they said it was a robbery and they didnt know he was gay.  The simple fact is IMHO Yordi was wrong in what he did but the young man that was the victim will try to blow this up into more than it is to get attention to something that is wrong.  Bigotry is wrong on so many levels, I agree is this the best we can do with our overcrowded courts.  Fine him put it on his record so if it happens again then he can suffer more serious consequences in the future and move on.

He was benched for the Simpson game too.
I think he threw thirty passes against Simpson. Not sure how many were from the bench.

He sure did: http://www.iowaconference.com/TASFBC/2007-FB/HTML/war-sim.htm

That's my bad.  For some reason I was thinking he sat for two games.

You aren't getting that old.   ;D ;D ;D ;D  Don't you remember the conspiracy theory about setting him out against the weakest IIAC team to serve his punishment?  That must have been at least 2-3 pages back in Nov and the wondering if he would be back for the Dutch game?

This is water under the bridge I hope, like KC Dutch said, he learns from this and can move on and be a better man.  Proof that going to college is not all in the classroom.

Free speech is also for the stupid.

It is up to his peers and those that can influence him like parents, teachers, and coaches to change his attitude.  Making these slurs criminal opens up a whole different can of worms.

Coocoo hope we can get you to 0 at least maybe even in the positive Karma soon  ;D

Dutchie in the words of your buddy coco "thanks for the lecture". FYI:  I have on many occasions wrote letters to the editor and Sean Keeler. I guess I should have wrote more. I know my spelling stinks, but thanks for pointing it out. I will also write down everything I have done wrong in my life and start xorrecting those errors as well.

I have 'wrote' letters to the editor and Sean Keeler. I guess I should have 'wrote' more. Are you serious? I certainly don't claim to be an excellent writer, but that's basic English. Sorry, but spelling isn't the only thing that stinks. Sorry to bust your chops, but seriously...

OK, I haven't had an english class since about 1975. I know my spelling and sentence structure aren't what they should be. But can we cut everyone some slack on their usage? I feel like I'm in Mrs Lucas' class in 4th grade.

On the players from SEP.  They may be good players but they will be a year behind the players that are on campus now.  They may help the team but who is to say they will make first team?  I hope that they do come the depth at those positions will be nice after all the injuries we suffered through this year.

I may be coming late in the 'YORDI ISSUE" but I don't think this is about one individual athlete at Wartburg.   I think it is about a jock culture that has permeated high school and college athletics in general......often encouraged by coaches of the same "jock culture".  Nick Yordi is only a recipient of what he has been encouraged to believe by this culture and he lived it out by shouting out of his dorm room to his disfame.

This "jock culture" will only be changed by the coaches themselves who will not promote it, who will not recruit by suggestion of a gay culture at competitive schools.  In my opionion, after observing the IIAC for 50 years, we need to clean up our own act.  Nick Yordi is a kid of our own IIAC product.  It is time to clean up our own act.

Yordi's punishment of sitting out for the Cornell game was the result of another issue of something being left on the other individuals myspace or facebook page made to look like it was from Yordi. I saw this kid's page in the past and he definitely has an agenda. There's no question that what he did was stupid, but what is going on right now is a complete waste of taxpayer dollars and is making a mockery of the legal system. I thought the whole situation was over until I read that link last night.
Its all part of the "I'm a victim" culture we live in right now.
Dutchfan1, don't go making a mountain out of a molehill. This is nowhere close to the Matthew Sheppard situation.
The whole concept of a hate crime is ridiculous if you ask me. Someone goes out and kills someone and for some reason it is worse if that person is of a different orientation?
A guy can yell out a derogatory term at 3 different people, but if the term actually applies, its a crime?
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Old Norse ...

Thank you for your comments re: "jock culture."  Whether we speak of racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other "ism," those in authority (coaches, administrators, teachers, etc.) set the tone for those who are subject to that authority (athletes and students).  After graduating from UD in '65 I returned as College Chaplain in '68.  That Fall, in the Mexico City Olympics ... Tommie Smith and Lee Evans were kicked off the US Olympic team for a "demonstration" on the victory stand.  When I used that event in a college chapel sermon as an example of racism and misguided nationalism, I was painted by some members of the football coaching staff as a bleeding heart liberal and a communist.

A few years later when Bernie Peeters was an outstanding running back for the Norse, I remember him being trashed (an unknown phrase in those days) from the stands as "g*d dammed, long haired hippie" (I wonder what coaches of opposing teams said to players about "getting" him) simply because he didn't fit the stereotype of the college athlete.

After that it was women athletes who, thanks to Title IX, were finally able to make inroads into college athletics ... even in the IIAC.

These days it is GLBT folk who suffer the prejudice, hate, ridicule, exclusion and sometimes violence not just of the "jock mentality" but also of the ignorance and narrow mindedness of those who lack vision, experience and maturity.

It isn't just the coaches who need to change.  It is too many administrators, professors, staff, and students who need conversion (I hate that word for religious reasons) for a more just, inclusive, and accepting world view.

While we wait for that conversion, there always will be someone who yells out a window ... makes a remark in the dinning hall ... steers clear of someone who is "different" ... or even engages in violence ... all discounting the value of another human being.

End of sermon.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I'm not quite sure to type that last sentence in a way that makes it a little clearer in what I'm trying to conveigh. The only way I can think to do that is to give an example.
If I'm walking down the street with 2 of my buddies who are 5'10, 180, and 6'5, 210. And someone says "hey fatty" to each one of them and then says the same thing to me, it can all of the sudden be called hate speech because I am overweight.

And I doubt that that person will be prosecuted for "attempting to elicit a hostile response", even if you went over and punched their lights out. You would be the one charged. What applies to one should apply to all. I'm not for one "oppressed minority" having more sway than another.

I have a high school diploma and college degree from Buena Vista University.  The sad thing is my command of the English language stinks in general.  I have a hard time understanding the difference between a verb and an adverb at times.  Why don't you knock the system that let me slide through?  Why don't you think about attacking the American educational system that produced people like me?  How about you knock on the text message, instant message, and all other form of electronic media culture we have in today's society.  These forms of media have trained us to use shorthand expressions to emphasize what we are saying.  These types of media have made us not learn to spell property.  Spell check on the computer was the worst thing ever invented.  Just because you do not see red and green lines, does not mean that you did not make a mistake.  You better start coming up with something better on me than my hold of the English language.  Tear apart my posts, tear apart my thoughts, and call me a piece of garbage if you want.

If you want to get out a ruler and measure up, let's do it.
