Any word on a Coe coach?
Sounds like a former IIAC coach (who has been a former coach for just a few months) may be making a return trip to the IIAC, just moving a little bit further south.

See this is how Wartburg stays on top.  They have spies everywhere.  It is a conspiracy I tell you.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Make that six.  Hefty is out.   We're down to Marv and Thurney

1 - Marv Levy
2- Bob Thurness
3 - Paul Hefty
4- Phiz Phillips
5- Glen Drawn
6 - DJ Leroy

Replace Paul Hefty with Hyden Fry.

That's a good one.   ;D When are they going to announce it? From my Coe connection here in CR I heard that they have still been bringing tons of kids on campus in the past three weeks and have gained commitments from quite a few.   Could be the biggest recruiting class in the past few years from what I heard.   They must have some good assistants for this to be happening.  With their defense all returning and the strength of that front, Coe might surprise some people next fall.  Now all they need is a QB to replace that TeKippe kid.

Are teams really getting commitments already??
I didn't think a lot of guys made those commitments until the financial aid packages came out.
Is a "commitment" level the same as a "commitment" at the D1 level?

no way.  kids can back out in august if they want and go to a community college until the spring semester then transfer to a different school.  most of the time when someone says theyre going to go to school x then they will show up in august, but its not until then that coaches can really evaluate their recruiting class

I think the FAFSAs need to be in by March 1 or sometime close to that so I assume aid packages come out shortly thereafter.

In DIII the committments are only as good as the character of the person who makes it.

No athletic scholarship = no letter of intent (a legally binding contract) = freedom of movement just as any regular student.

If memory serves aren't the presidential and regent scholarship days this month in Feb.  Seems to me that the letters come out in March in the middle or so and then most kids start the decision process after finding out how much financial aid the school is thinking.  I find it hard to believe that there are a lot of commitments to a team that the kids do know who the coach is going to be.  I know in the case of Central when Kac left that kind of left Wartburg in front till Coach Mac was named.  So I think if the kids that have committed then there isn't a lot of interest from other schools.  If there were other schools that these players were considering then till the coach is named they would be on the fence.  Now do not mistake this as an attack on Coe.  If there are kids that have committed to their program good for them.  Just being practical and have been in this situation before.  If the kids are being sought after by other schools then I just think that the players would be wanting to see who the coach is before they make their final decision.  As Heys said they can change their  mind too.  There may be roofs that need shingles somewhere you never know.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Driver,

I heard they had several guys from Freddie's school looking favorable at Coe.  Is that what you are talking about?   I also heard about the O-linemen that are transferring.  Anyone here anything further on that?  Heard they were some local names.

As far as Coe goes next fall, they will only go as far as their young O-Line will take them.   Currently they are extremely depleted at this position.   Their defense is good but can not score all the points.

Cochuck,

I thought that Coe had a bunch of young players at OL last year.  I thought that two years ago they had all seniors.  Were the players last years seniors as well? I agree with your statement about the OL though.  They are the unsung heroes of the team.  They will only take a team as far.  Having said that a Defense will keep an young offense in a game.  I know the Central's case that is what happened in 05.  The D kept them in the games and the O came through with enough points to get the W.  Sometimes the special teams had to put the points on the board.  The Wartburg game comes to mind there.

Two of them are graduated, and just because the others are young does not mean they will automatically turn into good players.

Point taken about them not becoming great players.  I would say though that bringing in freshman to replace them won't get them any where either.  One position that I think that upper classman fill well is OL as it takes some time to get a developed body to play that position.  It takes some time to learn the blocking schemes and techniques as well.  Most freshman are not ready to play at that level coming out of HS.  So replacing the 2 that you lose is valid but unless the 3 remaining players are horrible I think they will do better as returning lineman than freshman coming in.  Coe didn't have a horrible offense last year.  As far as replacing Tekippe Coe did it once (pretty effectively I would say after he blew out his knee) they can do it again.

Show, you mean you can DRINK real beer at your college, too? You mean, without having RA types follow you around? Wow, wonder what that was like...   ;D

(Sorry -- I've had a busy weekend, and I am finally catching up on some of these posts....)

I'm pretty sure that whole RA problem is a nation-wide epidemic...

My sources say they interviewed 5 guys and all of them were very good candidates. I have a source very close to Hefty, that basically said if he did interview, it wasn't done CR.
Who do your sources say the others are?

Another thing to take a look at is the kids who signed with Wayne State, SW MN State, and Mankato.  There were a lot of NW IA kids that went to these schools over BV or the other NAIA schools in the area.  For BV to climb to the top of the IIAC they need to show the kid who is going to take a small scholorship from a d2  school that their financial aid package is equal, and they have a better chance to play, rather than take a number and head to the scout team.

I almost fell into that category.  Wayne St. offered a partial scholarship, but luckily I really wanted to run the ball instead of playing SS, so I held out to see what BV's and Simpson's financial aid packages came out to be.  I can honestly say, I've never regretted that decision once!
